Swacchand Bhairav Ras – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More
Reference : Ras Tantra Saar and Siddha prayog Sangreha
Classical Indication : Grehani
Introduction
Grahani is a chronic digestive disorder described in Ayurveda, primarily arising from Mandagni (weak digestive fire). When digestion becomes impaired, improperly processed food leads to the formation of Ama (metabolic toxins), which accumulates in the intestines and disturbs nutrient absorption. Patients commonly experience irregular bowel movements, alternating diarrhea and constipation, mucus in stool, abdominal pain, heaviness after meals, loss of appetite, fatigue, and weight fluctuations. Persistent Grahani weakens dhatu nourishment and overall vitality. Swacchanda Bhairava Rasa is a classical herbo-mineral formulation indicated in Grahani and chronic malabsorption disorders. It acts as a potent deepana-pachana remedy, enhancing digestive fire, clearing Ama, and reducing Kapha-related mucus accumulation in the intestines. Let’s discuss it in detail!
Ingredients
- Purified Mercury – 10 tolas
- Purified Sulphur – 10 tolas
- Saindhav lavan – 20 tolas
- Bhilava Kwath
Description Of Ingredients
1. Purified Mercury (Shuddha Parada)
Purified Mercury is regarded in Rasashastra as yogavahi (a catalytic substance that enhances the potency and bioavailability of accompanying ingredients). In Grahani, where Agni (digestive fire) is weakened and Ama accumulates, Parada helps stimulate metabolic activity at both systemic and cellular levels. Properly processed mercury supports deepana (kindling digestion) and pachana (digesting toxins), thereby correcting impaired absorption. It also stabilizes deranged Vata in the intestines, which is responsible for irregular bowel movements. By promoting proper dhatu nourishment and improving intestinal function, it helps restore digestive strength and reduces chronic weakness associated with long-standing Grahani.
2. Purified Sulphur (Shuddha Gandhak)
Purified Sulphur is known for its antimicrobial, detoxifying, and rasayana properties. In Grahani, where sticky stools, mucus, and Ama accumulation are common, Gandhak helps by enhancing Agni and clearing intestinal toxins. It supports pachana while reducing Kapha-induced heaviness and sliminess in the gut. Gandhak also acts as a mild rejuvenative for intestinal tissues, helping repair chronic irritation and inflammation. Its subtle penetrating nature assists in clearing srotorodha (channel obstruction), thereby improving nutrient absorption. Additionally, it balances Vata-Kapha involvement in Grahani and supports proper bowel regulation, reducing mucus discharge and restoring digestive stability over time.
3. Saindhava Lavan
Saindhava Lavan (rock salt) is considered the best among salts in Ayurveda due to its tridosha-balancing nature, especially its ability to pacify Vata without aggravating Pitta. In Grahani, it acts as deepana and pachana, stimulating weak digestive fire and enhancing appetite. It reduces abdominal distension, gas, and heaviness after meals, common symptoms of impaired digestion. Saindhava also improves taste perception and salivary secretions, which initiate proper digestion. By liquefying Kapha and facilitating smooth movement of Vata in the intestines, it prevents irregular stool patterns and enhances absorption, thereby helping restore normal digestive rhythm and gut function.
4. Bhilava Kwath (Decoction Of Semecarpus Anacardium)
Bhilava is a powerful deepana-pachana herb known for its strong action on chronic digestive disorders. In Grahani, where Mandagni and Ama are predominant, Bhilava stimulates sluggish metabolism and enhances intestinal absorption. Its penetrating and heating qualities help break down sticky mucus and accumulated toxins in the gut. Bhilava also reduces chronic Kapha obstruction and regulates Vata movement, thereby controlling irregular bowel patterns. Traditionally, it is used in long-standing malabsorption conditions to restore Agni and improve strength. When used in controlled and purified form, its decoction supports digestive rejuvenation and corrects chronic Grahani dysfunction.
Method Of Preparation
- First, prepare Kajjali (black sulphide of mercury) from mercury and sulphur. Then mix Saindhav lavan and triturate with Bhilawa (Semecarpus anacardium) decoction for four days.
- Make a bolus and place them in a small earthen pot. Seal the mouth properly and subject it to mild heat in a Baluka Yantra (sand bath) over a furnace throughout the night.

This Swachchhanda Bhairava Rasa is used in Grahani (malabsorption syndrome) and following:-
- Sangrahani (IBS)
- Cough
- Cold
- Dyspnea
- Asthma
- Chronic fever
- Drowsiness

- Its use makes the body strong, radiant, and active.
Clinical Use
- This formulation destroys accumulated Ama and Kapha dosha, strengthens the affected site, and removes obstruction in the channels. In Sangrahani disorders where there is scanty stool, passage of sticky, slimy, thick mucus-like material with stool, excessive weakness, persistent uneasiness, gurgling in intestines, stool mixed with or without mucus, nausea, dryness of mouth, occasional vomiting, abdominal pain, and complete loss of appetite — this medicine is highly beneficial.

- In Kapha-dominant intermittent fever with drowsiness, it is especially useful. In chronic intermittent fever (malarial type), when excessive drowsiness appears, this rasa is given.
- It is also beneficial in conditions of obstruction in channels, excessive debility, insomnia, and light sleep. Its use helps proper nourishment of body tissues, thereby strengthening the body. It calms the mind, destroys internal toxins, and promotes healthy weight gain.
- In Sangrahani disorder: When digestive power of the stomach becomes very weak, causing stickiness in the mouth, heaviness in the abdomen for hours after meals, mild continuous abdominal pain, gaseous distension, delayed passage of flatus, and frequent passage of Ama in stool — in such symptoms, this medicine is indicated.
Dosage
1 to 2 ratti, twice daily

- Do not give it to patients suffering from dry cough.
- Do not use it in cases of loose, hot, watery diarrhea (acute atisara)
Conclusion
In the end it can be concluded that Grahani is not merely a disorder of the intestines, but a reflection of weakened Agni and disturbed metabolic harmony. When digestion falters, the entire body gradually loses strength, clarity, and vitality. Swacchanda Bhairava Rasa works at this fundamental level rekindling digestive fire, clearing accumulated Ama, and restoring intestinal stability. By correcting the root cause rather than only managing symptoms, it supports proper absorption, balanced bowel function, and renewed energy. With appropriate guidance and adjuvants, this classical formulation helps re-establish digestive resilience, allowing the body to rebuild strength and regain its natural rhythm.
