Introduction

Ayurveda views fever as a dynamic process influenced by doshic imbalance, digestive strength, and toxin accumulation, emphasizing individualized care rather than symptom suppression. Through timely detoxification, digestive correction, and gentle herbal support, the body regains its natural rhythm. Today we will talk about one such formulation indicated classically in fever i.e Vishvatapharan ras. Let’s discuss!

Ingredients

  1. Harad (Terminalia chebula) – 2 tola
  2. Pippal / Pippali (Piper longum) – 2 tola
  3. Tamra Bhasma (Calx of Copper) – 2 tola
  4. Purified Kuchla (Strychnos nux-vomica) – 2 tola
  5. Purified Jamalgota (Croton tiglium) – 2 tola
  6. Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) – 2 tola
  7. Nisoth / Trivrit (Operculina turpethum) – 2 tola
  8. Purified Mercury (Parada) – 2 tola
  9. Purified Gandhaka (Sulphur) – 2 tola

Description Of Ingredients

  1. Harad (Terminalia chebula) – Harad improves digestive fire and helps digest Ama, which is a primary cause of fever in Ayurveda. It supports detoxification and aids in restoring doshic balance during febrile conditions.
  2. Pippali (Piper longum) – Pippali acts as a powerful Deepana and Pachana, enhancing metabolism and reducing toxin accumulation. It also helps in relieving chills, weakness, and respiratory involvement in fever.
  3. Tamra Bhasma (Calx of Copper) – Tamra Bhasma supports liver function and improves metabolic processes that are often disturbed in fever. It helps in reducing excess Pitta and assists in cleansing the blood when used judiciously.
  4. Purified Kuchla (Strychnos nux-vomica) – After proper purification, Kuchla strengthens the nervous system and helps in chronic or recurrent fevers associated with weakness. It supports recovery by improving vitality and neuromuscular coordination.
  5. Purified Jamalgota (Croton tiglium) – Jamalgota acts as a strong detoxifying agent, helping eliminate deeply lodged toxins in stubborn fevers. Its use promotes rapid Shodhana under expert supervision.
  6. Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) – Kutki is renowned for its liver-protective and Pittashamaka properties. It helps manage fever by cleansing the liver and reducing inflammatory heat in the body.
  7. Nisoth / Trivrit (Operculina turpethum) – Nisoth gently purifies the intestines and removes accumulated toxins contributing to fever. It supports proper elimination, thereby aiding faster reduction of febrile symptoms.
  8. Purified Mercury (Parada) – Parada acts as a Yogavahi, enhancing the efficacy and penetration of other ingredients. It accelerates therapeutic action and supports quick restoration of balance in fever states.
  9. Purified Gandhaka (Sulphur) – Gandhaka possesses antimicrobial and rejuvenative properties. It supports immune response, reduces microbial load, and aids tissue recovery during and after fever.

Method Of Preparation

  1. Preparation of Kajjali: First, purified mercury (Parada) and purified sulphur (Gandhaka) are triturated together until a fine, smooth, black powder known as Kajjali is formed. This process ensures proper bonding and detoxification of the minerals.
  2. Addition of Tamra Bhasma: After the formation of Kajjali, Tamra Bhasma is added and mixed thoroughly to ensure uniform distribution and proper assimilation within the formulation.
  3. Incorporation of Herbal Powders: Finely powdered forms of all the remaining herbal and mineral ingredients are then added to the mixture and blended evenly.
  4. Bhavana with Dhatura Juice: The complete mixture is triturated with Dhatura (Datura metel) leaf juice continuously for one day and night. This prolonged Bhavana enhances potency, stability, and therapeutic action.
  5. Preparation of Pills: After achieving a uniform, well-processed mass, pills are prepared, each weighing 1 ratti (182 milligrams).

Special Note

After giving bhavana with Dhatura Juice, three bhavanas with cannabis juice are also administered as it stops causing internal burning.

Indications

This rasa alleviates acute (nutan) fever. It is administered when purgation is required in fever. It helps to eliminate liver disorders, constipation, and disorders of the gall bladder, thereby destroying fever. It is also beneficial in Visham jwara (irregular fevers). Since this rasa does not have strong ama-pachana properties, it is not suitable in Ama Jvara. It is mainly indicated in fevers free from ama, i.e. Nutan Jvara. The property of relieving constipation in this rasa is due to Jamalgota, Kutki, and Nisoth but it does not strongly digest ama.

Clinical Use

  • This medicine is liver-stimulating and purgative. It should be used in fevers arising from liver disorders along with Bhringaraja juice. In fevers associated with jaundice, this medicine works especially well.
  • If severe fever is associated with heaviness, swelling, and rapid onset of inflammation, then after administering Vishva Tapaharana Rasa for some time, bowel cleansing should be done through mild purgatives or enemas.
  • Administering castor oil or glycerin enema, or giving 10–15 tola castor oil mixed with 30–40 tola warm water orally, quickly cleanses the bowels. In children, glycerin suppositories also help in bowel cleansing.
  • In liver enlargement disorders, this medicine is considered of superior quality. However, small children often cannot tolerate this rasa. If it must be given to children, it should be administered with 1–2 ratti of Praval Pishti.
  • In countries where rainfall is high and atmospheric humidity prevails, such as tropical regions, this medicine is more suitable. Although this formulation is also used in place of ArogyavardhiniVati which is mainly indicated for liver disorders.
  • After liver enlargement, if chronic edema and jaundice develop, then administering this formulation along with the juice of leaves of Koranti (Marathi–Nepali; Sanskrit–Nipala; Latin: Ixora parviflora) or Punarnava juice provides good results.

Dosage

2 to 4 ratti, three times a day, with ginger juice and honey or lukewarm water mixed with sugar.

Contraindications

Sometimes, if the dose is increased or given to individuals with predominant Pitta constitution, harmful symptoms such as excessive heat, bleeding disorders, severe diarrhea, and weakness may occur. Therefore, this medicine should be used cautiously and should not be administered to pregnant women, extremely delicate individuals, or those with strong Pitta constitution.
