Aaviltoladi Kashaya (Pootikatvagadi Kashaya) – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Aaviltoladi Kashaya, also known as Pootikatvagadi Kashaya, is a classical Ayurvedic decoction indicated primarily for the management of Teevra Jwara (acute high-grade fever) associated with impaired digestion and weakness of the digestive fire. Fever is regarded in Ayurveda as one of the foremost diseases, arising due to the vitiation of the Doshas and suppression of Agni (digestive fire). When digestion becomes impaired, Ama (metabolic toxins) accumulate in the body, obstructing normal physiological functions and leading to persistent fever, anorexia, heaviness, fatigue, and body pain. This formulation combines herbs possessing Jvaraghna (antipyretic), Deepana (digestive stimulant), Pachana (Ama-digesting), and Balya (strength-promoting) properties. The decoction not only reduces fever but also restores digestive strength, which is considered essential for complete recovery. The classical text further recommends preparing Takra Peya (thin gruel made with buttermilk) using the decoction and administering it for three consecutive days. This dietary approach provides nourishment while enhancing digestion without burdening the gastrointestinal tract. The formulation includes herbs that pacify Kapha and Vata dosha, digest Ama (endotoxins), improve metabolism, and promote proper fluid balance. Consequently, Aaviltoladi Kashaya is particularly useful in acute febrile illnesses accompanied by poor appetite, sluggish digestion, and generalized debility.

Note: Some classical manuscripts mention Musta (Cyperus rotundus) instead of Vishnukranta (Evolvulus alsinoides) as a textual variant.

A decoction prepared from Pootika bark, Laja, Shunthi, Punarnava root, Duralabha, Vishnukranta (or Musta according to another reading), and sugarcane should be boiled until one-fourth of the original liquid remains. This decoction is then used to prepare Takra Peya (buttermilk gruel), which should be consumed for three consecutive days. It effectively alleviates severe fever and significantly improves digestive strength.

Ingredients

  1. Pootika Tvak (Bark of Pootika) (Holoptelea integrifolia) – Indian Elm Bark – 1 part
  2. Laja (Puffed Rice) – 1 part
  3. Shunthi (Zingiber officinale) – Dry Ginger – 1 part
  4. Punarnava Moola (Boerhavia diffusa) – Root of Spreading Hogweed – 1 part
  5. Duralabha (Fagonia cretica) – Duralabha Herb – 1 part
  6. Vishnukranta (Evolvulus alsinoides) – Dwarf Morning Glory – 1 part
    • Textual variant: Musta (Cyperus rotundus) – Nut Grass
  7. Ikshu (Saccharum officinarum) – Sugarcane – 1 part
  8. Water – 16 parts

Method of Preparation

  • Prepare a coarse powder of all the herbal ingredients.
  • Add 16 parts of water to the mixture.
  • Boil gently until the liquid is reduced to one-fourth of its original volume.
  • Filter the decoction through a clean cloth while warm.
  • Use the prepared decoction to prepare Takra Peya (buttermilk gruel) as directed in the classical text.
  • The medicated gruel is traditionally administered for three consecutive days.

Dose

  • Kashaya: 40 ml, twice daily, or as directed by an Ayurvedic physician.
  • Classical dietary regimen: Takra Peya prepared using the decoction for three days.

Ayurvedic Properties of the Ingredients

1. Pootika Tvak (Holoptelea integrifolia)

Pootika possesses Kashaya (astringent) and Tikta (bitter) Rasa, Laghu (light) and Ruksha (dry) Guna, Ushna Virya (hot potency), and Katu Vipaka (pungent post-digestive effect). It alleviates Kapha and Vata, supports digestion, reduces inflammation, and is traditionally employed in fever and skin disorders.

2. Laja (Puffed Rice)

Laja is light, easily digestible, and nourishing. It provides energy during fever without overloading digestion. It helps absorb excess moisture, supports weakened Agni, and is frequently recommended in convalescent diets.

3. Shunthi (Zingiber officinale)

Shunthi is one of Ayurveda’s foremost Deepana and Pachana herbs. It digests Ama, stimulates appetite, relieves nausea, reduces Kapha accumulation, and promotes sweating, thereby assisting in fever management.

4. Punarnava Moola (Boerhavia diffusa)

Punarnava is renowned for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and rejuvenating properties. It helps reduce oedema, eliminates accumulated fluid, supports liver function, and aids recovery from prolonged febrile illnesses.

5 Duralabha (Fagonia cretica)

Duralabha possesses bitter and cooling properties that help reduce Pitta and purify the blood. Traditionally, it is used in fever, inflammatory disorders, and conditions associated with excessive heat and toxin accumulation.

6. Vishnukranta (Evolvulus alsinoides)

Vishnukranta acts as a mild febrifuge, nervine tonic, and Rasayana. It supports immune function, improves strength, reduces fatigue, and facilitates recovery after fever.

Textual Variant: When Musta (Cyperus rotundus) is used instead of Vishnukranta, it provides excellent Deepana, Pachana, Jvaraghna, and Grahi actions, making the formulation especially effective in fevers associated with digestive disturbances.

7. Ikshu (Saccharum officinarum)

Sugarcane provides nourishment and hydration during fever. It replenishes energy reserves, reduces excessive thirst, and supports recovery while balancing the heating nature of the digestive herbs.

Therapeutic Actions

Aaviltoladi Kashaya exhibits the following therapeutic actions:

  • Reduces acute high-grade fever.
  • Digests Ama and restores digestive fire.
  • Improves appetite following febrile illness.
  • Promotes perspiration and natural fever resolution.
  • Reduces body ache and fatigue.
  • Supports hydration and nourishment.
  • Enhances recovery during the convalescent stage.
  • Improves Agni and metabolism.
  • Pacifies Kapha and Vata Doshas.
  • Supports overall strength and vitality.

Indications

The formulation is traditionally indicated in:

  • Acute high-grade fever (Teevra Jwara)
  • Fever associated with Ama
  • Intermittent fever
  • Fever with loss of appetite
  • Digestive weakness during febrile illness
  • General debility following fever
  • Kapha-dominant fever
  • Slow recovery after infectious illnesses

Mode of Action According to Ayurveda

Aaviltoladi Kashaya works by eliminating Ama, the primary pathological factor responsible for many febrile conditions. Shunthi, Pootika, and Punarnava stimulate impaired digestive fire, allowing proper digestion of toxins and preventing further Dosha aggravation. The combination reduces Kapha accumulation, improves circulation within the gastrointestinal tract, and promotes sweating, which facilitates the natural reduction of fever. The inclusion of Takra Peya serves as an ideal dietary adjunct because buttermilk is considered Laghu (light) and Deepana, improving digestion without aggravating Kapha. The gruel supplies nourishment while maintaining digestive efficiency, thereby preventing recurrence of Ama formation during recovery. Ikshu replenishes fluids and energy, while Vishnukranta (or Musta according to textual variation) supports immune function and enhances systemic recovery. Collectively, the formulation restores Agni, balances the Doshas, and accelerates convalescence.

Modern Pharmacological Perspective

Many herbs in Aaviltoladi Kashaya have demonstrated pharmacological activities that support their classical uses. Dry Ginger (Zingiber officinale) possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and digestive stimulant properties. Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) exhibits hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic activities that may assist recovery during systemic infections. Vishnukranta (Evolvulus alsinoides) has shown antioxidant, neuroprotective, and immunomodulatory effects in experimental studies, while Musta (Cyperus rotundus), the accepted textual variant, is reported to possess antipyretic, antimicrobial, and gastroprotective activities. Holoptelea integrifolia has demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, supporting its traditional use in inflammatory disorders. The combination of these herbs may help reduce inflammatory mediators, improve digestive enzyme activity, enhance immune responses, and support metabolic recovery following acute febrile illnesses. Although these pharmacological findings are encouraging, the formulation should be administered under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician, especially in cases of persistent or severe fever.

Conclusion

Aaviltoladi Kashaya is a valuable classical Ayurvedic formulation designed for the management of acute fever accompanied by impaired digestion and Ama accumulation. By combining antipyretic, digestive, detoxifying, and restorative herbs, the formulation not only reduces fever but also strengthens Agni, enhances appetite, and promotes faster recovery. The unique recommendation of administering the decoction as Takra Peya reflects the Ayurvedic emphasis on integrating appropriate diet with herbal therapy. Owing to its comprehensive action on digestion, metabolism, and systemic strength, Aaviltoladi Kashaya remains a clinically relevant formulation for supporting recovery from febrile disorders while restoring normal physiological balance.
