Abhirumuladi Kashaya – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages
Introduction
Abhirumuladi Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic decoction traditionally indicated in the management of Unmada (mental and psychiatric disorders), a condition broadly described in Ayurveda as a severe disturbance of the mind, intellect, perception, memory, behavior, and emotional balance. The formulation is simple in composition yet profound in therapeutic application. It consists of only three herbs namely Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Gambhari (Gmelina arborea), and Indravaruni root (Citrullus colocynthis) which are processed into a decoction and administered along with cow’s ghee for an extended duration. According to Ayurvedic principles, Unmada develops when the Doshas, particularly Vata dosha, become aggravated and disturb the channels responsible for mental and neurological functions. The resulting imbalance affects the Manovaha Srotas (channels of the mind), leading to altered cognition, perception, emotional instability, and behavioral abnormalities. Abhirumuladi Kashaya combines nourishing, cooling, cleansing, and detoxifying herbs. The formulation is designed not only to calm disturbed Vata dosha but also to eliminate accumulated toxins and restore the normal functioning of bodily and mental tissues. The addition of cow’s ghee further enhances its effectiveness by nourishing the nervous system and facilitating deeper tissue penetration of the medicinal principles. Owing to its balanced actions, this Kashaya has traditionally been administered over a prolonged period to support recovery from chronic neurological and psychological disturbances.
Classical Reference
अभीरुकन्द काश्मर्य गवाक्षीमूल साधितः ।
कषायः सर्पिषा पीतस्त्रिभिः पक्षैस्तमाक्षिपेत् ॥ (Sahasrayogam)
A decoction prepared from Abhiru Kanda (Shatavari tuber), Kashmarya (Gambhari), and Gavakshi Mula (Indravaruni root), when administered with ghee for three fortnights (approximately 45 days), is beneficial in the management of Unmada.
Ingredients
The following ingredients are taken in equal proportions:
- Abhiru Kanda (Shatavari) (Asparagus racemosus) – Wild Asparagus Root
- Kashmarya / Gambhari (Gmelina arborea) – Gambhari
- Gavakshi Mula / Indravaruni Root (Citrullus colocynthis) – Bitter Apple Root
- Water – Sixteen times the total quantity of the herbal mixture
Additive
- Cow’s Ghee (Ghrita) – administered at the time of consumption
Method of Preparation
The ingredients are cleaned thoroughly and coarsely powdered to prepare Yavakuta Churna (coarse powder). Sixteen parts of water are added to the herbal mixture and boiled gently over moderate heat. The decoction is reduced to one-eighth of its original volume according to classical Kashaya preparation principles.
The liquid is then filtered through a clean cloth while warm. The prepared Kashaya is administered in a lukewarm state. A suitable quantity of cow’s ghee is mixed immediately before administration to enhance its nourishing and therapeutic effects.
Dose
- 40 ml twice daily, or as directed by an Ayurvedic physician.
- Traditionally administered with cow’s ghee.
- Duration of administration: approximately 45 days.
Ayurvedic Properties of the Ingredients
1. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)
Shatavari is one of Ayurveda’s most respected Rasayana herbs. It nourishes the nervous system, supports mental stability, and promotes tissue regeneration. Its cooling and rejuvenating nature helps pacify aggravated Vata and Pitta while strengthening weakened bodily tissues.
2. Gambhari (Gmelina arborea)
Gambhari is included among the important Brihat Panchamoola herbs. It possesses nourishing, strengthening, and Vata-pacifying properties. Traditionally, it is used to support tissue repair, improve vitality, and maintain healthy functioning of the nervous system.
3. Indravaruni Root (Citrullus colocynthis)
Indravaruni is known for its cleansing and detoxifying actions. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe it as useful in removing accumulated Dosha obstructions from various channels of the body. In carefully administered formulations, it assists in eliminating pathogenic factors that may contribute to chronic systemic and neurological disturbances.
4. Cow’s Ghee
Cow’s ghee is regarded as one of the finest substances for nourishing the brain and nervous system. It enhances memory, supports mental clarity, calms aggravated Vata, and acts as an ideal carrier for herbal constituents. Ghee also helps deliver medicinal principles into deeper tissues while reducing excessive dryness and degeneration.
Therapeutic Action
Abhirumuladi Kashaya works through a dual mechanism of nourishment and purification. The formulation provides deep support to depleted tissues while simultaneously helping remove accumulated Doshas and metabolic toxins that may interfere with normal physiological and mental functions. Shatavari nourishes the nervous system and promotes stability of mental functions. Gambhari contributes strengthening and restorative effects, helping maintain tissue integrity and vitality. Indravaruni supports cleansing mechanisms that facilitate the elimination of accumulated toxins and obstructive factors. From an Ayurvedic perspective, many chronic mental disorders involve both depletion of higher tissues and obstruction of subtle physiological channels. This formulation addresses both aspects simultaneously. The nourishing herbs rebuild strength and stability, while the cleansing component helps restore proper channel function. The addition of cow’s ghee further supports cognitive functions, mental calmness, and neurological resilience. Together, these actions help restore balance to disturbed Vata Dosha and improve the functioning of the Manovaha Srotas.
