Ajmodadi Kashaya – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Ajmodadi Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic decoction described for the management of Caturthika Jvara (quartan fever), a type of recurrent fever characterized by periodic episodes occurring at fixed intervals. The formulation is mentioned in two forms in the Ayurvedic classics. The first consists solely of Ajamoda, while the second combines Ajamoda with Katuka Rohini. Both preparations are valued for their ability to kindle digestive fire (Agni), digest accumulated Ama (metabolic toxins), and alleviate recurrent febrile conditions. In Ayurveda, recurrent fevers are often associated with impaired digestion, accumulation of toxins, and derangement of Doshas, particularly Kapha and Pitta. Ajmodadi Kashaya works by correcting these underlying disturbances rather than merely suppressing fever. Its ingredients support digestion, improve metabolism, reduce toxin accumulation, and help restore physiological balance.

Classical Reference

केवलेनाजमोदेन कषायो विधिना शृतः ।
चातुर्थिकंज्वरंहन्ति रोहिण्या समलंकृतः ॥ (Sahasrayogam)

A decoction prepared according to classical procedure using Ajamoda alone alleviates quartan fever. When combined with Rohini (Katuka Rohini), its effectiveness in managing recurrent fever becomes even greater.

Composition – First Formula (Ajamoda Kashaya)

Ingredients

  1. Ajamoda (Apium graveolens) – 1 part
  2. Water – 16 parts

Method Of Preparation

The coarse powder (Yavakuta Churna) of Ajamoda is prepared and mixed with sixteen times water. The mixture is boiled over mild heat until the liquid is reduced to one-eighth of its original quantity. The decoction is then filtered through a clean cloth and administered in a lukewarm condition.

Dose

40 ml twice daily.

Indications

  • Caturthika Jvara (quartan fever)
  • Recurrent fevers associated with impaired digestion
  • Ama-related febrile conditions

Composition – Second Formula (Ajmodadi Kashaya)

Ingredients

  1. Ajamoda (Apium graveolens) – 1 part
  2. Katuka Rohini / Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) – 1 part
  3. Water – 16 parts

Method Of Preparation

The ingredients are coarsely powdered and mixed with sixteen times water. The mixture is boiled until only one-eighth of the original quantity remains. After filtration, the decoction is administered lukewarm.

Dose

40 ml twice daily.

Indications

  • Caturthika Jvara
  • Fever associated with Ama accumulation
  • Digestive impairment accompanying febrile disorders
  • Fever with nausea, heaviness, and loss of appetite

Ayurvedic Properties Of The Ingredients

1. Ajamoda (Apium Graveolens)

Ajamoda is a well-known digestive and carminative herb. It possesses Deepana (appetite-stimulating) and Pachana (digestive) properties that help eliminate Ama from the gastrointestinal tract. Its warming nature assists in reducing Kapha accumulation and promoting healthy digestive function. Traditionally, it has been used in abdominal discomfort, indigestion, bloating, and recurrent fevers associated with poor digestion.

2. Katuka Rohini (Picrorhiza Kurroa)

Katuka Rohini is one of Ayurveda’s important bitter herbs. It is known for its Pitta-Kapha pacifying action and its ability to cleanse the liver and digestive system. It promotes proper bowel function, reduces toxic accumulation, and supports healthy metabolism. Due to its potent detoxifying properties, it is frequently included in formulations intended for chronic fever and hepatic disorders.

Therapeutic Action

Ajmodadi Kashaya acts primarily through the correction of digestive disturbances. Ayurveda considers impaired digestion to be one of the principal causes of recurrent fever. When digestion weakens, partially digested substances accumulate within the body and become Ama (endotoxins). This Ama (endotoxins) circulates through various tissues, obstructs channels, and contributes to the recurrence of fever. The first formulation containing only Ajamoda is suitable when digestive weakness and Kapha accumulation are the predominant factors. The herb stimulates digestion, improves assimilation, and helps prevent the formation of Ama (endotoxins). The second formulation, enriched with Katuka Rohini, provides a broader therapeutic action. Along with digestive stimulation, it promotes detoxification, supports liver function, and assists in eliminating accumulated toxins. This makes it especially useful in persistent or recurrent fevers associated with heaviness, coated tongue, nausea, and sluggish bowel movements.

Clinical Significance

  • The classical indication of Caturthika Jvara corresponds to fevers that recur at regular intervals. Such fevers are often difficult to manage because the underlying pathological process remains active even when the fever temporarily subsides. Ajmodadi Kashaya addresses this concern by acting on the root causes of the disorder.
  • The decoction helps maintain digestive strength during illness, reduces the burden of toxins, and supports natural recovery. The addition of Katuka Rohini in the second formula is particularly valuable when fever is accompanied by signs of liver dysfunction, digestive sluggishness, or excessive Pitta-Kapha involvement.
  • Because the formulation is simple and focused, it demonstrates the Ayurvedic principle that carefully selected herbs can provide profound therapeutic benefits when used appropriately.

Precautions

  • The decoction should be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
  • Patients with severe fever, dehydration, or significant systemic illness require proper medical evaluation.
  • Katuka Rohini possesses strong bitter and cleansing properties; therefore, dosage should be adjusted according to the patient’s strength and digestive capacity.
  • Pregnant and lactating women should use the formulation only under professional supervision.
  • Freshly prepared decoction is preferred for optimum therapeutic benefit.

Conclusion

Ajmodadi Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic formulation specifically designed for recurrent and quartan-type fevers. Available in two variations, it combines the digestive and Ama-digesting properties of Ajamoda (Apium graveolens) with the detoxifying and liver-supportive effects of Katuka Rohini (Picrorhiza kurroa) in its expanded form. By enhancing digestion, eliminating Ama, supporting metabolism, and restoring Doshic balance, the formulation addresses the root pathology of recurrent fever. Its simplicity, effectiveness, and classical foundation continue to make it a valuable therapeutic preparation in Ayurvedic practice.
