Amritarnava Ras – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

REFERENCE – Rasa Tantra Saar & Siddha Prayog Sangrah Part 2/ Kaas Chikitsa Chapter- 12/ Formulation 1 & Ras Yog Sagar.

Abstract

Respiratory pathologies, particularly chronic dry cough (Vataja Kasa), complex variant coughs, and deep-seated respiratory complications such as emphysema (Vayukop Sphiti), represent persistent challenges in clinical practice. These conditions are fundamentally rooted in the aggravation of Vata and Kapha doshas, the accumulation of metabolic endotoxins (Ama), and the deterioration of deep tissue channels (Pranavaha Srotas). Conventional modalities frequently provide temporary symptomatic suppression without altering the underlying tissue architecture or restoring structural elasticity to the pulmonary alveoli.

Amritarnava Ras is a specialized classical herbo-mineral formulation that resolves this therapeutic challenge through a multi-targeted approach. By synthesizing highly purified mineral calces and potent metallic components with a synergistic matrix of pungent botanical herbs and scraping agents, it effectively clears blocked channels, pacifies aggravated Vata, liquefies sticky Kapha, and rejuvenates depleted vital tissues. This balanced formulation bridges target-specific respiratory clearance with profound systemic restoration, safely re-establishing normal breathing patterns and lung vitality.

Introduction

Amritarnava Ras is a celebrated herbo-mineral Ayurvedic preparation explicitly designed for the comprehensive management of complex respiratory ailments, prominently featuring Vataja Kasa (cough driven by aggravated Vata), chronic persistent coughs, low-grade recurrent fevers accompanying respiratory distress, and structural airway challenges.
In classical Ayurvedic pharmacology, respiratory disorders rarely remain localized; they quickly implicate systemic channels due to the upward translocation of vitiated Vata (Urdhva Vata) and obstruction by pathological Kapha. Amritarnava Ras addresses this multi-systemic disruption by combining mineral calces (Shuddha Parada, Shuddha Gandhaka, and Lauh Bhasma) with dynamic catalysts like Tankan and a broad spectrum of carminative, anti-inflammatory, and scraping botanicals. It acts as an exceptional penetrating agent (Tikshna), dismantling deep-seated mucus plugs, correcting digestive sluggishness, and nourishing the pulmonary tissue matrix without provoking systemic heat or aggravating Pitta.

Classical Indication

  • Manda Jwara (Persistent low-grade chronic fever associated with deep-seated respiratory distress)
  • Emphysema & Airway Compromise (Vayukop Sphiti) (Alveolar hyperinflation, loss of elastic recoil, breathlessness, and frothy expectoration)
  • Pranavaha Srotorodha (Obstruction and constriction of respiratory micro-channels)

Ingredient Description

1. Shuddha Parada (Purified Mercury)

Acting as a core catalytic bio-carrier (Yogavahi), purified mercury crosses deep tissue barriers to drive the formulation’s active compounds directly into the respiratory micro-channels, playing a pivotal role in eradicating deep-seated tissue blockages and fulfilling its indication for chronic, treatment-resistant Vataja Kasa.

2. Shuddha Gandhaka (Purified Sulphur)

Acting synergistically with mercury to form Kajjali, purified sulphur provides deep internal detoxification and acts as a specialized carrier that enhances overall systemic bioavailability, directly aiding in the pacification of aggravated Vata and the resolution of persistent low-grade fever (Manda Jwara).

3. Lauh Bhasma (Calcined Iron Ash)

Providing vital structural support to wasted and depleted tissues, calcined iron ash directly counters the systemic exhaustion and physical weakness associated with long-standing respiratory ailments, completing the formulation’s objective of restoring vitality and strength.

4. Shuddha Tankana (Purified Borax)

Possessing intense scraping (Lekhana) and mucolytic properties, purified borax actively breaks down dense, viscous mucus plugs and softens airway restrictions, playing a critical role in clearing obstructed respiratory passages and managing alveolar compromise like emphysema.

5. Rasna (Pluchea Lanceolata)

Providing targeted anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving actions, Rasna directly targets neuralgic chest pain (Shoola) and bodily stiffness, fulfilling the formulation’s requirement to alleviate the severe physical discomfort characteristic of violent coughing fits.

6. Vayavidanga (Embelia Ribes)

Serving as a potent channel-clearing and cleansing agent, Vayavidanga disrupts accumulated metabolic toxins (Ama) within the digestive and respiratory tracts, supporting the systemic clearing of micro-channels (Srotorodha) necessary for free breathing.

7. Haritaki (Terminalia Chebula)

As a key component of the Triphala trio, Haritaki ensures smooth downward movement of Vata (Vata Anulomana) and provides gentle internal cleansing, preventing the upward translocation of vitiated doshas that triggers respiratory distress.

8. Bibhitaka (Terminalia Bellirica)

Specially targeted toward the throat and upper respiratory mucosa, Bibhitaka helps clear excessive Kapha, reduces hoarseness of voice, and soothes localized irritation, completing the therapeutic management of respiratory congestion.

9. Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis)

Rich in natural antioxidants and cooling properties, Amalaki pacifies internal inflammatory heat (Pitta) without hindering expectancy, protecting sensitive mucosal linings from the harshness of acute coughing paroxysms.

10. Devadaru (Cedrus Deodara)

Possessing deep-penetrating and heating qualities, Devadaru works to relieve deep-seated chest congestion, pacify aggravated Vata, and ease spasmodic respiratory contractions, ensuring comprehensive relief from painful coughing fits.

11. Shunti (Dry Ginger)

Delivering intense heating potency (Ushna Virya), dry ginger directly kindles a sluggish digestive fire (Mandagni), metabolizes heavy toxic waste (Ama), and prevents the further accumulation of phlegm in the body.

12. Maricha (Black Pepper)

Operating as a powerful micro-channel cleaner, black pepper opens up obstructed bodily pathways and enhances the penetration of the heavy mineral calces into the deeper pulmonary tissues to relieve airway constriction.

13. Pippali (Long Pepper)

Providing long-term respiratory rejuvenation, long pepper repairs worn-out mucosal tissue in the respiratory tract, improves lung function, and acts as a supreme catalyst for clearing chronic, deep-seated coughs.

14. Guduchi (Tinospora Cordifolia)

Acting as a powerful immunomodulator and cooling agent, Guduchi supports cellular immunity, balances internal inflammatory heat, and helps clear lingering low-grade chronic fevers associated with respiratory infections.

15. Padmaka (Prunus Cerasoides)

Providing a soothing, cooling counterbalance to the intense heating agents in the formula, Padmaka relieves burning sensations in the chest and throat while maintaining overall respiratory comfort.

16. Shuddha Vachnabh (Purified Aconitum Rerox)

Acting as a potent, controlled neuro-vascular stimulant when meticulously purified, this herb relieves acute respiratory spasms, subdues severe airway constriction, and fulfills the formula’s action against stubborn respiratory.

Method of Preparation

Here Is The Method Of Preparation For Amritarnava Rasa

Take equal parts (samabhag) of all 16 medicinal ingredients. Combine all the ingredients together and grind/triturate them thoroughly in a mortar and pestle (kharal). Add honey (madh) to the triturated mixture and roll it into small pills measuring 1 Rati (125 mg)

Medicinal Properties

  • Vataja Kasa (Spasmodic Dry Cough): Administered to relieve piercing chest pain, dull facial complexions, and violent fits of dry cough; its therapeutic efficacy is optimized when combined with Sitopaladi Churna or a micro-dose of camphor (Karpura) during acute paroxysms.
  • Low-Grade Fever (Manda Jwara): Effectively clears chronic, lingering subfebrile temperatures that often accompany protracted respiratory infections and tissue depletion.
  • Emphysema & Alveolar Distension (Vayukop Sphiti): Addresses functional changes where alveolar walls lose recoil capability; combined with mucolytic adjuncts such as Kaphakunjara Rasa, it successfully liquefies and clears stubborn, sticky secretions from compromised lung spaces.
  • Channel Clearance & Spasmolysis: Dilates constricted bronchial trees, eases restrictive breathing patterns, and directs the downward movement of Vata (Vata Anulomana).

Impact On Dosha

Amritarnava Ras primarily targets and pacifies Vata and Kapha doshas. Its sharp (Tikshna), heating (Ushna), and pungent (Katu) qualities cut through heavy, cold Kapha obstructions while subduing the erratic, painful neurological firing characteristic of aggravated Vata. Simultaneously, the inclusion of cooling, restorative elements like Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) and Padmaka (Prunus cerasoides) prevents the aggravation of Pitta, ensuring that internal inflammatory heat and burning sensations in the chest are properly controlled.

Indications

  • Vataja Kasa (Dry, painful, spasmodic cough)
  • Shushka Kasa (Severe dry coughing fits with chest soreness)
  • Manda Jwara (Associated low-grade chronic fever)
  • Vayukop Sphiti (Emphysema and diminished alveolar elasticity)
  • Pranavaha Srotorodha (Bronchial congestion and respiratory tract constriction)

Dosage

Standard Dosage: 1 to 2 pills (approximately 1 to 2 Rati, equivalent to roughly 125 mg to 250 mg per dose), administered 2 to 3 times daily, or precisely as directed by an experienced Ayurvedic physician.

Anupana (Adjuvant)

  • To be taken with Warm Milk or Fresh Water.
  • In cases of severe, distressing dry cough (Shushka Kasa), it is classically recommended to administer the formulation alongside Sitopaladi Churna or with the addition of half a Rati of purified Camphor (Karpura).

Conclusion

Amritarnava Ras represents a pinnacle of classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation engineering, perfectly structured to tackle complex, treatment-resistant respiratory conditions. By harmonizing powerful metallic and mineral calces with a targeted spectrum of warming carminatives, scraping agents, and soothing immunomodulators, it addresses both the root cause and manifest symptoms of chronic respiratory distress. Whether breaking up stubborn alveolar congestion in emphysema, subduing violent dry coughs, or clearing lingering subfebrile states, Amritarnava Ras restores structural integrity, clears blocked vital channels, and safely re-establishes ease of breathing and systemic vitality.
