Arkeshwar Ras – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Raktapitta is a significant clinical condition in Ayurveda characterized by the spontaneous bleeding from various orifices of the body, such as the nose, mouth, or urinary tract. Rooted in the aggravation of Pitta Dosha, this disorder occurs when excessive internal heat “corrupts” the blood (Rakta), causing it to move uncontrollably and leak from the vessels. Often triggered by an overindulgence in spicy, salty, or acidic foods and prolonged exposure to heat, Raktapitta is not merely a bleeding symptom but a sign of deep-seated systemic imbalance and blood toxicity. Arkeshwar Ras serves as a potent mineral-based solution specifically formulated to address these acute manifestations. By incorporating Tamra Bhasma (processed copper) and other purified minerals, it acts as a powerful “Stambhana” (hemostatic) agent that cools the blood and restores the integrity of the vascular walls. When administered with cooling vehicles like Vasa juice, Arkeshwar Ras effectively pacifies the fiery nature of Pitta, treats underlying nutritional gaps like Scurvy, and strengthens the liver to halt the progression of the disease. Let’s discuss it in detail!

Ingredients

Mix equal parts of the following 5 medicines:

  1. Tamra Bhasma (Incinerated Copper)
  2. Ras-Sindoor (Red Sulfide of Mercury)
  3. Vang Bhasma (Incinerated Tin)
  4. Abhraka Bhasma (Incinerated Mica)
  5. Swarna-Makshik Bhasma (Incinerated Copper Pyrite)

Description Of Ingredients

1. Tamra Bhasma (Incinerated Copper)

Produced by purifying copper and incinerating it with herbal juices. It is traditionally used for liver disorders, skin diseases, and metabolic issues. It possesses Lekhana (scraping) properties. It acts on the liver and spleen (the roots of Raktavaha Srotas). By clearing obstructions and balancing Kapha-Pitta, it prevents the “overflow” of vitiated blood. Copper is a vital cofactor for tyrosinase and ferroxidase. It aids in iron metabolism and helps maintain the structural integrity of blood vessels, potentially reducing capillary fragility.

2. Ras-Sindoor (Red Sulfide of Mercury)

A sublime preparation of purified Mercury and Sulfur. It is a potent Yogavahi (catalyst) that enhances the efficacy of other herbs mixed with it. Known for its Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. It quickly stabilizes the Agni (metabolic fire) and stops internal hemorrhaging by pacifying the sharp qualities of Pitta. Chemically mercuric sulfide, its nanoparticles are thought to modulate the immune response. In controlled doses, it may act as a systemic styptic by influencing the clotting cascade.

3. Vang Bhasma (Incinerated Tin)

Prepared from purified tin, it is primarily used for genitourinary disorders and general debility. It is cooling in nature (Sheeta Virya). Its cooling property directly counteracts the heat of Pitta. It is particularly effective in Adhoga Raktapitta (bleeding from the lower tracts) due to its affinity for the urinary and reproductive systems. Tin compounds are researched for their role in heme-oxygenase induction, which can have cytoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects on the mucosal linings where bleeding occurs.

4. Abhraka Bhasma (Incinerated Mica)

Made by hundreds of incinerations (Puti) of mica with decoctions. It is one of the most powerful cellular regenerators in Ayurveda. It nourishes all seven Dhatus (tissues). By strengthening the Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) and calming the Pitta in the lungs and stomach, it treats both upward and downward bleeding. Rich in magnesium, potassium, and iron, it acts as a potent antioxidant. It stabilizes cell membranes and prevents oxidative damage to blood cells, maintaining blood viscosity.

5. Swarna-Makshik Bhasma (Incinerated Copper Pyrite)

Derived from Chalcopyrite ($CuFeS_2$), it contains both Copper and Iron. It is considered a cheaper yet highly effective alternative to Gold Bhasma. It is the premier choice for Pandu (anemia) and Raktapitta. It has Tikta (bitter) and Madhura (sweet) tastes, which are the specific tastes required to pacify burning Pitta. It provides bioavailable iron and copper, essential for hemoglobin synthesis. By correcting underlying blood deficiencies and improving platelet function, it helps physically arrest bleeding.

Method Of Preparation

Mix all the ingredients and give 21 “Bhavanas” (trituration/processing) with Giloy juice and prepare tablets of 1-1 Ratti (approx. 125 mg) each.

Indications And Clinical Use

  • Consuming Arkeshwar Ras along with a light, wholesome, and nutritious diet cures severe Raktapitta (bleeding disorders) within a few days.
  • This occurs due to lack of nutrition. Gums become loose and bleed, breath becomes foul, and teeth gradually decay. Bleeding occurs from the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and mouth  If red coloring in the blood decreases, “Pandu” (Anemia) occurs, leading to heart palpitations. In some cases, blood or lymph (albumin) is passed in urine; diarrhea may also occur. Both Chandrakala Ras and Arkeshwar Ras are beneficial here. Being copper-dominant, they strengthen the liver and act as stabilizers/soothers for the blood vessels.
  • If there is extreme physical weakness, anemia, or loss of appetite, Arkeshwar Ras provides more benefit than Chandrakala Ras. For respiratory injuries (Urakshata) or frequent nosebleeds, Vasa juice and honey are the preferred vehicles (Anupan).

Dosage

1 to 2 tablets twice a day with Vasa juice and honey, or with Adusa leaves, Kshir Vidari powder, and honey.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the therapeutic approach to Raktapitta through formulations like Arkeshwar Ras highlights the sophisticated nature of Ayurvedic mineralogy. By addressing the root cause—excessive heat and blood vitiation—rather than just the symptom of bleeding, this treatment provides a comprehensive restorative effect. The integration of Tamra Bhasma and Ras-Sindoor ensures that the medicine is fast-acting and potent, while the accompanying dietary guidelines ensure the body is not further provoked by inflammatory triggers. Ultimately, the efficacy of Arkeshwar Ras relies on the synergy between the medicine and the Anupan (vehicle). When paired with cooling agents like Vasa or honey, the formula effectively stabilizes the circulatory system, replenishes vital nutrients, and protects the organs from the corrosive effects of aggravated Pitta. This ancient protocol remains a testament to the holistic logic of Ayurveda, where mineral strength and herbal cooling work in harmony to restore the body’s natural equilibrium and vitality.
