Ashmarihar Kashayam

Introduction

Ashmarihar Kashayam is a classical Ayurvedic herbal decoction traditionally used for the management of Ashmari (urinary calculi or stones), Sharkara (gravel), Sikata (sand-like urinary deposits), and painful urinary disorders associated with the kidneys and urinary bladder. The formulation contains several diuretic, anti-inflammatory, stone-breaking, and urinary tract soothing herbs that help support healthy urinary flow and reduce discomfort caused by urinary obstruction. The term “Ashmarihar” literally means “destroyer of stones.” In Ayurveda, Ashmari is considered a serious disorder caused by the vitiation of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha along with the accumulation of mineral deposits in the urinary system. This Kashayam is designed to dissolve or disintegrate urinary concretions, relieve spasms, improve urine flow, and reduce inflammation of the urinary tract.

Ingredients

The following ingredients are used in the preparation of Ashmarihar Kashayam:

  • Pashanbheda (Bergenia ligulata) – Stone Breaker Herb
  • Sagwan Fruit (Tectona grandis) – Teak Fruit
  • Papita Root / Erand Karkati (Carica papaya) – Papaya Root
  • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) – Wild Asparagus
  • Gokshura / Gokhru (Tribulus terrestris) – Small Caltrops
  • Varuna Bark (Crataeva nurvala) – Three-Leaved Caper Bark
  • Kusha Root (Desmostachya bipinnata) – Sacred Grass Root
  • Kasa Root (Saccharum spontaneum) – Wild Sugarcane Root
  • Rice Plant Root (Oryza sativa) – Paddy Root
  • Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) – Spreading Hogweed
  • Guduchi / Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) – Heart-Leaved Moonseed
  • Chichda Root (traditionally identified regionally; often associated with urinary herbs)
  • Kheera Kakdi Seeds (Cucumis sativus) – Cucumber Seeds
  • Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) – Spikenard
  • Khurasani Ajwain Seeds (Hyoscyamus niger) – Henbane Seeds

Quantities

According to the classical formulation:

  • The first thirteen herbs are taken in equal quantities of 1 tola each (approximately 11–12 g each).
  • Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi) and Khurasani Ajwain (Hyoscyamus niger) are taken in quantities of 2 tola each (approximately 23–24 g each).

The herbs are coarsely powdered (Jaukut Churna) for preparing the decoction.

Method of Preparation

All ingredients are cleaned properly and coarsely powdered. Approximately 1 tola (about 12 g) of the prepared herbal mixture is taken for each dose. The coarse powder is mixed with 16 tola water (approximately 180–190 ml water). The mixture is then boiled slowly until one-fourth quantity remains, which is approximately 45–50 ml.

The decoction is filtered while warm.

To this filtered Kashayam, one of the following may traditionally be added:

  • Shilajit – 5 ratti (approximately 600 mg)
  • Kshar Parpati – 10 ratti (approximately 1.2 g)
  • Jawakhar – 10 ratti (approximately 1.2 g)

The medicine is then administered warm.

Dose and Administration

  • Dose of coarse powder: Around 1 tola (11–12 g)
  • Water for decoction: Approximately 16 tola (180–190 ml)
  • Final decoction quantity: One-fourth remaining (45–50 ml)
  • Frequency: Two to three times daily, depending on severity

In severe pain or urinary obstruction, the formulation may traditionally be administered every 2 hours under medical supervision.

2. Sharkara and Sikata)

The formulation is also useful in gravel in urine, sand-like urinary deposits, small crystal formations and recurrent urinary sediment. These conditions are considered early stages of stone formation in Ayurveda.

3. Renal Colic and Bladder Pain

The decoction is traditionally administered in Vrikka Shool (kidney pain), Mutrashaya Shool (bladder pain) and painful urinary obstruction. Its antispasmodic and diuretic herbs help relieve discomfort and ease urine passage.

4. Urinary Inflammation

Several ingredients in the formulation soothe urinary irritation and inflammation. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) provide cooling and anti-inflammatory effects.
