Ashtanga Ghrita – Composition, Indications & Properties

Introduction

Ashtanga Ghrita is a classical Ayurvedic medicated ghee prepared using eight important cognitive-enhancing and rejuvenating herbs processed in clarified cow ghee and milk. The formulation is traditionally valued for its ability to support mental clarity, memory, speech, and intellect, while simultaneously promoting vitality and longevity. The combination of Medhya Rasayana herbs (cognition enhancer herbs) with a lipid base enhances bioavailability and allows the active principles to penetrate deeper tissues, particularly the nervous system

This preparation is widely described as a nourishing formulation that supports cognitive functions and overall neurological health. Because of its rejuvenative and stabilizing actions on the mind and nervous system, Ashtanga Ghrita has been traditionally used in conditions associated with impaired memory, reduced mental strength, and neurodegenerative tendencies.

2. Ghrita Dravya

  • Murchita Goghrita (Clarified Cow Ghee derived from Bos indicus) — 640 ml

3. Drava Dravya

  • Goksira (Cow Milk derived from Bos indicus) — 2.56 litres

Method of Preparation

The herbal ingredients listed under kalka dravyas are cleaned and triturated to form a fine paste. This herbal paste is mixed with Murchita Goghrita (cow ghee) and cow milk in a stainless steel vessel. The mixture is then heated gently according to the classical Sneha Paka (oil preparation) procedure, ensuring slow and uniform cooking.

The heating process continues until the liquid components evaporate and the medicated ghee remains in its final form. After completion of cooking, the ghrita (ghee) is allowed to cool naturally. It is then filtered and stored in clean, airtight wide-mouth glass containers. This final medicated ghee preparation is known as Ashtanga Ghrita.

Method of Administration

Dose: 5–10 gm once or twice daily depending on digestive strength and physician advice.

Anupana: Warm milk (derived from Bos indicus).

Shankhapushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) provides calming and neuroprotective support, helping stabilize mental functions. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) contributes nourishing and rejuvenating properties that support nervous tissue. Guduci (Tinospora cordifolia) acts as a Rasayana that improves systemic resilience and immune balance. Bakuchi (Psoralea corylifolia) supports metabolic activity and tissue vitality.

Murchita Goghrita (derived from Bos indicus) serves as a Yogavahi (catalystic) medium, enabling the herbs to penetrate deeper tissues and enhancing their neurological benefits. The presence of cow milk further nourishes the nervous system and supports long-term cognitive health.
