Abstract
In modern gastroenterology, chronic gastrointestinal disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), chronic amoebic dysentery, and relapsing diarrhea present complex therapeutic challenges. These conditions are characterized by altered gut motility, persistent abdominal pain, flatulence, and the frequent passage of stools mixed with mucus. While contemporary medicine often relies on prolonged courses of antibiotics, antispasmodics, or motility-altering drugs—which carry risks of gut dysbiosis, drug resistance, and systemic side effects—Ayurveda and Unani systems target the underlying metabolic roots.
Left unaddressed, chronic intestinal inflammation impairs the Agni (digestive fire), leading to the continuous generation of Ama (toxic, undigested metabolic by-products). This Ama infiltrates the intestinal mucosa, resulting in Aamajgrahani (malabsorption syndrome) and Pravahika (dysentery).
Bhuvneshwari Vati is a specialized, multi-ingredient herbo-mineral formulation expertly designed to break this pathogenic loop. By combining deep-cleansing minerals, powerful botanical astringents, and specialized binding resins, it kindles the metabolic fire, binds loose stools, neutralizes Ama, and heals the intestinal lining, thereby restoring optimal digestive health and systemic vitality.
Introduction
Bhuvneshwari Vati is an authoritative, multi-systemic tablet formulation primarily indicated for chronic, deep-seated disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Though prepared using Ayurvedic methodologies, it is uniquely recognized as a Yoonani Prayog (a formulation with roots or adaptations in Unani medicine), reflecting a rich synthesis of cross-traditional clinical experiences.
The formulation integrates a purified mineral base with potent herbal carminatives, carminative resins, and specific binding agents. Subjected to precise trituration in a specialized mucilaginous botanical medium, the final pill acts as an excellent intestinal astringent, anti-diarrheal, digestive, and cellular healer.
Clinically, Bhuvneshwari Vati targets the Annavaha Srotas (digestive channels) and Purishvaha Srotas (excretory channels). It successfully checks hyper-motility, stops the shedding of mucus and blood from the intestinal walls, and provides sustained relief to patients who have suffered from debilitating, chronic bowel issues for years.

Ingredient Description
Shuddha Hingul (Purified Cinnabar)
Purified Cinnabar acts as a powerful, bio-available mineral base. It possesses deep-penetrating (Sukshma), antimicrobial, and deep-tissue-stimulating properties. It corrects Agnimandya (sluggish digestion) and quickly stops the replication of gut pathogens without disturbing the healthy microbiome.
Heeradokhi Gond (Dragon’s Blood Resin)
A premier, deeply red plant resin celebrated for its exceptional hemostatic and wound-healing traits. It directly targets bloody diarrhoea, actively constricting ruptured micro-vessels in the intestinal mucosa to halt bloody stools and speed up ulcer healing.
Mocharas (Silk Cotton Tree Gum) & Raal Safed (White Dammar)
Both are highly potent plant exudates rich in natural tannins. They act as exceptional astringents (Stambhana). They coat the raw, inflamed mucosal lining of the intestines, reduce hyper-secretion of fluids, and firm up loose, watery stools.
Bel (Bael Fruit)
The gold standard in Ayurvedic gastroenterology. It contains mucilage and pectin, which absorb metabolic toxins (Ama). It exhibits Grahi properties—meaning it balances gut motility, improving stool consistency whether the patient is experiencing loose motions or irregular bowel contractions.
Ajjasar
A specialized resinous botanical extract that provides strength to the intestinal smooth muscles, alleviating chronic tenesmus (the constant feeling of needing to pass stool) and cramping.
Gulab ke Phool (Rose Petals)
Provides a cooling (Sheeta) and soothing effect on the digestive tract. It effectively pacifies Pitta Dosha, dampens internal burning sensations, and neutralizes the hot, sharp qualities of other ingredients like asafoetida and cinnabar.
Kapoor (Camphor) & Hing (Asafoetida)
Powerful carminatives and antispasmodics. Asafoetida aggressively eliminates Afara (gas accumulation) and kindles the digestive fire, while Camphor imparts an antimicrobial action, leaving a soothing effect on the enteric nervous system to alleviate Udar Shoola (abdominal pain).
Afeem (Purified Opium)
Used in highly controlled, purified, and minimal therapeutic quantities. It acts as a profound Stambhana (anti-diarrheal) agent by slowing down hyper-peristalsis (excessive gut movement), allowing the intestines sufficient time to absorb water and vital nutrients.
Sonageru (Processed Red Ochre)
Roasted in Cow’s Ghee, this mineral compound is rich in iron and highly soothing to mucous membranes. It acts as an antacid, counteracts internal bleeding, and provides a protective, cooling layer over intestinal ulcerations.
Bihidana Ke Luaab (Quince Seed Mucilage)
The processing medium (Bhavana Dravya). It yields a thick, protective, and highly demulcent gel. When triturated with the dry powders, it binds them together while providing a therapeutic, lubricating coat that shields the stomach from irritation and soothes inflamed tissues.
Method Of Preparation
All eleven dry ingredients are finely powdered and sieved individually. The equal-part powders are combined in a clean Khalva Yantra (mortar and pestle) and mixed thoroughly into a uniform blend. Freshly extracted Bihidana ke Luaab (Quince seed mucilage) is gradually added to the mixture. The mass is systematically triturated (Ghotkar) until the mucilage thoroughly penetrates every particle, and the mixture achieves a smooth, unified, dough-like consistency. Once the moldable mass passes the standard tests of tablet-making (non-sticky, crack-free consistency), it is rolled into uniform pills (Vati) equal to the size of a chickpea (Chana). The pills are dried completely in a clean, shaded area (Chhaya-shushka) to preserve volatile components like Camphor. Once fully dry, they are stored in airtight glass containers away from dampness.
Medicinal Properties
Pravahika & Chronic Amoebiasis (Amoebic Dysentery)
Administer 1 to 2 pills of Bhuvneshwari Vati with fresh buttermilk or pomegranate juice 2 to 3 times daily. The formulation utilizes the Vyavayi and Stambhana properties of purified Opium alongside the catalytic Hingul to calm hyper-peristalsis, lower intestinal motility, and enhance stool consistency by regulating Apana Vata and arresting frequent, mucus-laden bowel movements.
Aamajgrahani (Malabsorption Syndrome)
Administer 1 to 2 pills with fresh buttermilk twice or thrice daily. The Deepana, Pachana, and Srotoshodhana actions of Hing, Bel, and Shuddha Hingul scrape away accumulated Ama (metabolic wastes), regulate irregular bowel contractions, clear sticky mucus from the intestinal tract, and revitalize damaged mucosal tissues caused by chronic gastrointestinal inflammation.
Raktatisar & Pittatisar (Hemorrhagic Dysentery & Inflammatory Diarrhea)
Administer 1 to 2 pills with fresh pomegranate juice or cold water. It decreases pelvic and intestinal congestion, strengthens the vascular control over the ruptured capillaries of the mucosal walls via the heavy astringent actions of Heeradokhi and Mocharas, and pacifies Pitta Dosha, effectively preventing bloody stools and the burning sensations associated with acute inflammatory diarrhea.
Grahani Bala Vardhana (Enhancing Intestinal Vitality)
with buttermilk, this formulation works as a premium gastrointestinal restorative (Grahi). It improves nutrient absorption parameters, enhances digestive stamina, corrects structural and functional weaknesses of the Annavaha Srotas (digestive system), and restores overall physical radiance and youthful vitality (Ojas) previously depleted by chronic wasting diseases.
Impact On Dosha
Bhuvneshwari Vati is an expert Samadosha-Hara formulation, with a primary focus on balancing Pitta and Kapha in the lower gastrointestinal tract. Its hot, digestive components (Hing, Hingul) digest the cold, sticky, stagnant Kapha (Ama/mucus). Simultaneously, its cooling, binding components (Gulab, Geru, Mocharas) pacify the liquid and sharp qualities of Pitta, stopping inflammation and bleeding without aggravating Vata.
Indications
- Chronic Pravahika (Amoebic dysentery)
- Aamajgrahani (Malabsorption Syndrome)
Raktatisar (Blood in stools like in Ulcerative colitis flare-ups) - Pittatisar (Diarrhea presenting with burning sensation and yellow, watery stools)
- Chronic, relapsing diarrhea associated with long-standing gut weakness
- Frequent urge to pass stool (3 to 4 times a day) accompanied by incomplete evacuation
- Udar Shoola (Abdominal colic and cramping)
