Chandi Ka Khijab

Introduction

Chandi ka Khijab is a traditional external-use preparation intended for natural hair coloring and cosmetic enhancement. In classical practice, it is used to restore dark coloration to greying hair while preserving a more natural appearance than artificial chemical dyes. The term Khijab refers to a hair-darkening paste, while Chandi indicates the inclusion of silver-derived compounds in its preparation. Unlike modern synthetic hair colors, this formulation relies on carefully processed mineral ingredients and aromatic floral water to achieve gradual and long-lasting pigmentation. It is designed to work progressively, with repeated applications deepening the shade until it resembles the natural color of healthy black hair. This preparation is not meant for internal use and should be handled carefully, as it contains potent mineral substances. Historically, it was valued for its ability to provide cosmetic benefits while avoiding the harsh effects of industrial hair dyes.

Ingredients

  • Raupya Kshar (Silver Nitrate) – 1 tola (~11.7 g)
  • Gandhak ka Tezab (Sulphuric Acid) – 1 tola (~11.7 g)
  • Gandhak Amlasar / Amlasaar Compound – 20 tola (~233 g)
  • Gulab Jal (Rose Water / Rosa damascena) – 60 tola (~700 ml approx.)

Method Of Preparation

Silver nitrate and sulphuric acid are placed together in a porcelain bowl. This bowl is then heated over burning charcoal. After approximately 15–20 minutes, the acid evaporates or reacts, leaving behind a processed silver residue referred to in the text as Chandi ki Bhasam. Separately, the Gandhak Amlasar is triturated continuously for 3 days to achieve a fine and homogeneous texture. On the fourth day, rose water is added gradually while continuing the grinding process. This wet trituration is continued for another 3–4 days, allowing the rose water to integrate thoroughly with the mineral base. Finally, the prepared silver residue is added, and the mixture is stored in a clean bottle. If the total rose water volume decreases during processing, additional rose water may be added to maintain consistency.

Method Of Application

  1. Wash the hair thoroughly with soap or a mild cleanser.
  2. Dry the hair properly.
  3. Apply a small quantity of Khijab evenly over the hair.
  4. Allow it to dry completely.
  5. Wash the hair afterward.

If accidental staining occurs on surrounding skin, it may be removed using oil or ghee.

Expected Results

  • First application: lighter color effect
  • By the third application: hair develops a more natural black tone

This gradual approach prevents overly artificial coloration.

Cosmetic Properties

Chandi ka Khijab is valued for:

  • Progressive hair darkening
  • Natural-looking pigmentation
  • Coverage of greying hair
  • Enhanced shine and texture
  • Traditional mineral-based cosmetic action

Role Of Ingredients

  • Silver Nitrate serves as the active coloring agent, reacting with hair proteins to create darker pigmentation.
  • Sulphuric Acid aids in transforming silver nitrate into a reactive form suitable for blending.
  • Rose Water provides fragrance, cooling quality, and a soothing medium for external application.

The repeated trituration improves smoothness and ensures even distribution.

Precautions

  • For external use only
  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
  • Conduct a patch test before full use
  • Do not apply on damaged scalp or open wounds
  • Store away from children
  • Use gloves if desired during application

Conclusion

Chandi ka Khijab is a traditional mineral-based hair cosmetic designed for gradual and natural hair darkening. Its carefully processed silver compound and rose water base provide a distinctive alternative to modern dyes. With repeated application, it restores a black tone that closely resembles natural hair color. When used responsibly and externally, it remains an interesting example of classical cosmetic formulation in traditional practice.
