Diet Plan for Liver Cirrhosis Patients
5:30 AM: WAKE-UP TIME: Relax and go for walk if possible. Leisure walk is recommended if there is water retention and edema. Do not consume excess water, especially in the morning.
6:00 AM: EMPTY STOMACH: 4-5 Almonds (soaked overnight) / Dandelion / Moringa / Tulsi Herbal Tea / Radish juice 10 ml / Indian gooseberry (Amla) 1-2 fruit / Amla juice 10 ml with equal amount of water
6:15 AM: Go to Toilet and freshen up yourself. Brushing your teeth with herbal Tooth powder (Planet Ayurveda Gum Care Powder) is recommended. Note down that the intake of Almonds, Amla, Herbal tea etc is all before doing any cleaning of teeth.
6:30 AM: 30-45mins walk, 30mins (Light exercises, yoga, meditation – simple breathing exercises like anulom-vilom, Bhastrika paranayam is recommended. If you can do Kapal Bhati pranayam, that's also good.
8:00 AM: BREAKFAST: Do light breakfast. Foods that help to detoxify liver and soak the water.
Oats (with Vegetables) / Upma / Suji or Besan Chila / Idli (Filled with green vegetables) / Porridge (enriched with seasonal vegetables) / Vegetable Sandwich ( brown bread or whole wheat grain bread) / 2 Boiled egg white / 1-2 Chapatti / 1-2 Missi Chapatti / Sabzi / Dal / Mung Dal Khichdi – Do not consume all of the above, but only 1 of them.
(Use Mustard oil for cooking or Cow's ghee, Do not use Refined or Olive oil – Olive is good for heart, but for liver, it's very hot in nature)
11:00 AM: MIDDLE MEAL: Green tea / Herbal Tea (made from cumin, coriander and fennel seeds) /Fruits / Green gram Sprouts – Do not consume fruit juices, coconut water or any fruits or salads containing water. For example, do not consume oranges, tomatoes, water melons, melons. Radish, Carrots, Beets, Wheatgrass, Spinach and other such items are good to be consumed.
1:00-2:00 PM: LUNCH: Have 1 Bowl of green salad before lunch. Any of the below- Eggs white, Grilled chicken, 2 Wheat Chapatti / 2 Missi Chapatti / Dal / Sabzi / Rice / Mung Dal Khichdi or porridge. Brown bread is recommended over white bread. If you want to eat non-veg, once in a while, the dry, roasted, grilled is recommended with gravy.
Do not consume beef, pork or duck. Only small quantity of chicken or fish is ok.
5:00 PM: EVENING MEAL: Fruits / Roasted Chana (Nuts) / Herbal Tea / Green Tea / Dates or Raisins (in small quantity) / Green gram Sprouts
8:00 PM: DINNER: Boiled Vegetables with a piece of brown bread or 1 Wheat Chapatti or 1 Missi Chapatti. Do not consume salads at night as they increase vata. If you feel any gas formation in the evening, consume herbal tea made from Jeera (Cumin), Sounf (Fennel) and Ajwain (Thyme)
1 Wheat Chapatti / 1 Missi Chapatti / Dal / Sabzi / Rice / Mung Dal Khichdi
VEGETABLES THAT SHOULD BE CONSUMED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Bitter gourd, Bottle gourd, Round gourd, Ridge gourd, Pumpkin, Carrot, Spinach, Mustard Greens, Chicory, Kale, Sweet Potato, Potato, Lettuce, Turnip, Radish, Beets (boiled), Dandelion greens
VEGETABLES THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Canned Vegetables, Peas, Cauliflower, Mushrooms, French beans, Tomatoes, Onions, Ginger, Broccoli, Cabbage, Garlic
FRUITS THAT SHOULD BE CONSUMED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Apple, Avocado, Walnuts (soaked), Guava, Papaya, Pineapple, Banana, Dates, Strawberries, Peach, Raisins
FRUITS THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Oranges, Lemon, Berries, Watermelon, Muskmelon, Citrus limetta (mosmi), Cucumber, Mangoes, Limes, Grapes, Apricots
SPICES THAT SHOULD BE CONSUMED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Turmeric, Pepper, Cumin, Coriander, Fennel, Thyme, Cardamom, Fenugreek
SPICES THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Excess table salt, Red chilies
NON VEG THAT CAN BE TAKEN IN LIMITED QUANTITY IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Grilled fish, Roasted chicken, Boil egg white
NON VEG THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Beef, Pork, Duck and other heavy animal meat
PULSES THAT SHOULD BE CONSUMED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS:
Yellow Lentils Split (Mung Dal), Pink Lentils Split (Masoor Dal), Green Gram (Hare Mung)
PULSES THAT SHOULD BE LIMITED IN LIVER CIRRHOSIS Diet Plan
Kidney beans, Chickpeas, Black lentils / Rajmah, Chole, Udad.
OTHER PRODUCTS THAT SHOULD BE CONSUMED:
Whole Wheat Flour, Brown Rice, Almonds, Small Quantity of Sunflower Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds, Licorice Root, Honey, Brown Bread.
OTHER PRODUCTS THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED:
Milk and Milk products , Butter, Cheese, Beef, Pork, All packaged juices, Alcohol, Margarine, Mayonnaise, Chips, Pasty, Cake, Biscuits, Pizza, Pie, Processed Sugar, Sweets, Chocolates, Bacon, Sausage, Frozen food, Soy sauce, Soda, High fat milk, Chutney, Papad, Pickles, Tea, Coffee, Aerated drinks, Flax seeds and sesame seeds should be avoided, as they are hot.
- Prepare flour for missi chapatti by mixing wheat flour (40%) + Chickpea flour (20%) + Jau flour (10%) + Soybean flour (10%) + Millets flour (10%). Use this flour mixture for making missi chapattis.
- Patient is advised to take Steam Bath (10 to 15 mins), Sun Bath (1 hour).
- Prefer boiled food only.
- Before cooking, soak vegetables in filtered water & wash them properly.
- Limit protein intake. Use lean protein such as legumes, poultry and fish. Egg whites are ok if the albumin is low.
- Use purified or boiled water always.
