Erandabilvadi Kashaya – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Erandabilvadi Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic decoction indicated for the management of Vata-dominant painful disorders, particularly those affecting the pelvic region (Shroni), shoulders (Amsa), penis (Medhra), heart region (Hrid), breasts (Stana), and chest (Urah). In Ayurveda, Shoola (pain) is predominantly caused by the aggravation of Vata Dosha, especially when it is associated with obstruction of body channels (Srotorodha) or accumulation of Ama (metabolic toxins). This formulation is designed to alleviate pain by pacifying Vata dosha, reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and promoting the normal movement of bodily Vata. The formulation contains a combination of herbs that possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory, Vata-Kapha pacifying, digestive, and urinary supportive properties. Eranda (Ricinus communis), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Brihati (Solanum indicum), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Matulunga (Citrus medica), Pashanabheda (Bergenia ligulata), and Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) work together to relieve pain, improve tissue function, and reduce stiffness. The therapeutic efficacy of the decoction is further enhanced by the addition of Yavakshara (alkali prepared from barley), Hingu (Asafoetida), Saindhava Lavana (Rock Salt), and Eranda Taila (Castor Oil), which facilitate digestion, reduce Vata, and improve the absorption of the formulation. Owing to its broad spectrum of action, Erandabilvadi Kashaya is traditionally used in painful conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system, pelvic organs, urinary tract, and thoracic region.

A decoction prepared from Eranda (Ricinus communis), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Brihati (Solanum indicum), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Matulunga (Citrus medica), Pashanabheda (Bergenia ligulata), and Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), administered along with Yavakshara (Alkali prepared from barley), Hingu (Ferula asafoetida), Saindhava Lavana (Rock Salt), and Eranda Taila (castor oil), helps relieve pain affecting the pelvic region, shoulders, back, heart region, breasts, and chest.

Ingredients

The formulation contains the following ingredients in equal proportion (1 part each):

  1. Eranda (Ricinus communis) – Castor
  2. Bilva (Aegle marmelos) – Bael
  3. Brihati (Solanum indicum) – Indian Nightshade
  4. Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) – Yellow-berried Nightshade
  5. Matulunga (Citrus medica) – Citron
  6. Pashanabheda (Bergenia ligulata) – Stonebreaker
  7. Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) – Caltrop/Puncture Vine

Water: Sixteen times (16 parts) the total quantity of the coarse herbal powder.

Additives

The filtered decoction is administered with:

  • Yavakshara – Alkali prepared from barley
  • Hingu (Ferula asafoetida) – Asafoetida
  • Saindhava Lavana – Rock Salt
  • Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis oil) – Castor Oil

Method of Preparation

The herbal ingredients are cleaned, dried, and coarsely powdered individually before being mixed in equal proportions. Water equal to 16 times the weight of the combined coarse powder is added and boiled over mild heat until the volume is reduced to one-eighth of the original quantity. The decoction is then filtered through a clean cloth and used while lukewarm.

Dose

40 ml, twice daily (B.D.) or as advised by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Ayurvedic Properties

Erandabilvadi Kashaya possesses several important Ayurvedic actions:

  • Vata Shamaka (Pacifies aggravated Vata)
  • Shoolahara (Relieves pain)
  • Shothahara (Reduces inflammation)
  • Deepana (Enhances digestive fire)
  • Pachana (Digests Ama)
  • Srotoshodhaka (Maintains healthy body channels)
  • Mutrala (Supports urinary function)
  • Vatanulomana (Promotes the normal movement of Vata)

Therapeutic Benefits

1. Helps Relieve Pelvic Pain (Shroni Shoola)

The formulation is traditionally indicated for Shroni Shoola, referring to pain involving the pelvic region. Eranda (Ricinus communis) and Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) help reduce Vata aggravation, improve circulation, and support normal function of the pelvic tissues.

2. Supports Shoulder Pain Management (Amsa Shoola)

Pain affecting the shoulders often results from aggravated Vata dosha, muscular stiffness, or restricted movement. Devadaru (Cedrus deodara)-like Vata-relieving properties are complemented here by Eranda (Ricinus communis), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), and Brihati (Solanum indicum), which help improve flexibility, reduce discomfort, and support healthy musculoskeletal function.

3. Beneficial in Penile Pain (Medhra Shoola)

The decoction is classically indicated for Medhra Shoola, or pain affecting the penile region. Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) and Pashanabheda (Bergenia ligulata) support urinary tract health, while the Vata-pacifying herbs help relieve discomfort associated with Vata disorders.

4. Supports Relief from Cardiac Region Pain (Hrid Shoola)

Erandabilvadi Kashaya is also mentioned for Hrid Shoola, where pain in the cardiac region is associated with Vata imbalance. The formulation improves circulation, reduces muscular spasm, and promotes normal Vata movement. Sudden or severe chest pain should always be evaluated immediately through modern medical care.

5. Helps Manage Breast Pain (Stana Shoola)

Pain involving the breasts due to Vata predominance may benefit from this formulation. Its anti-inflammatory and Vata-pacifying properties help reduce discomfort and improve tissue function. Persistent breast pain should be medically evaluated to identify the underlying cause.

6. Useful in Chest Pain (Urah Shoola)

The decoction is beneficial in Urah Shoola, or pain involving the chest wall. Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Sunthi-like digestive action provided through the additives, and Hingu (Ferula asafoetida) help relieve Vata-related muscular tightness and improve the movement of Vata within the thoracic region.

7. Supports Urinary and Musculoskeletal Health

Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) and Pashanabheda (Bergenia ligulata) are well known in Ayurveda for supporting healthy urinary function. Their inclusion broadens the therapeutic scope of the formulation, especially in pelvic pain associated with urinary discomfort.

8. Improves Digestion and Reduces Ama

The addition of Yavakshara (Alkali prepared from barley), Hingu (Ferula asafoetida), and Saindhava Lavana (rock salt) enhances digestion, reduces gas formation, removes Ama, and improves the bioavailability of the herbal constituents. Proper digestion is considered essential for successful management of Vata disorders.

Indications

According to classical Ayurvedic texts, Erandabilvadi Kashaya is indicated in:

  • Shroni Shoola (Pelvic pain)
  • Amsa Shoola (Shoulder pain)
  • Medhra Shoola (Penile pain)
  • Hrid Shoola (Pain in the cardiac region)
  • Stana Shoola (Breast pain)
  • Urah Shoola (Chest pain)
  • Vata-predominant painful disorders
  • Pain associated with musculoskeletal and urinary involvement

Importance of the Additives

The formulation is traditionally administered with Yavakshara, Hingu (Ferula asafoetida), Saindhava Lavana (rock salt), and Eranda Taila (castor oil), each contributing specific therapeutic benefits.

  • Yavakshara (Alkali prepared from barley) improves digestion, reduces obstruction in body channels, and facilitates the movement of Vata.
  • Hingu (Ferula asafoetida) acts as a potent carminative and antispasmodic, helping relieve abdominal discomfort and Vata-related pain.
  • Saindhava Lavana (Rock Salt) enhances digestion, improves palatability, and supports unobstructed circulation of Vata.
  • Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis oil) is renowned for its Vata-pacifying, lubricating, and mild laxative properties, making it particularly beneficial in painful conditions associated with dryness and stiffness.

Conclusion

Erandabilvadi Kashaya is a valuable classical Ayurvedic formulation developed for the management of Vata-induced painful disorders involving the pelvis, shoulders, chest, heart region, breasts, and genitourinary system. The synergistic combination of Eranda (Ricinus communis), Bilva (Aegle marmelos), Brihati (Solanum indicum), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Matulunga (Citrus medica), Pashanabheda (Bergenia ligulata), and Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris), together with the classical additives, provides analgesic, anti-inflammatory, digestive, and Vata-pacifying actions. When prescribed by a qualified Ayurvedic physician and used alongside appropriate dietary and lifestyle measures, Erandabilvadi Kashaya serves as an effective traditional remedy for relieving pain, improving mobility, and supporting overall musculoskeletal and urinary health.
