Gulmahar Ras – Indications, Preparation & Dosages

Reference- Rasatantra Saar & Siddha Prayog Sangrah Part 2/ Gulma Chikitsa Chapter- 23/ Formulation 2

Abstract

Abdominal masses, localized distension, and severe chronic bloating, collectively classified under the umbrella of Gulma Roga in Ayurveda, present persistent challenges to gastrointestinal health. These conditions are deeply tied to weakened digestive fire (Mandagni), systemic tissue wasting, and the physiological imbalances of metabolic toxins (Ama). Conventional approaches often separate systemic nourishment from localized gastrointestinal treatment, sometimes exacerbating digestive sluggishness.

Gulmahar Ras, a classical herbo-mineral formulation, resolves this challenge through a multi-targeted therapeutic strategy. By combining highly purified, bioavailable mineral calces with a classic trio of pungent herbs and a potent alkaline catalyst, it simultaneously cuts through rigid tissue obstructions, kindles metabolic fire, and reverses systemic weakness. This balanced formulation bridges target-specific gut clearance with profound systemic rejuvenation, safely restoring visceral mobility and tissue integrity.

Introduction

Gulmahar Ras is a specialized, classical herbo-mineral Ayurvedic formulation celebrated for its powerful Gulmaghna (mass-destroying) and Rakta-Pitta-Kapha balancing properties. This formulation targets rigid, painful obstructions, deep-seated digestive sluggishness, and the general systemic decline that accompanies chronic abdominal disorders. By binding the scraping, transformative powers of Abhrak and Lauh Bhasma (mica and iron calx) with the metabolic heat of the Trikatu spices (Dry ginger, black pepper, and long pepper) and the penetrating nature of tankan (borax), it disrupts the stagnation of Ama (endotoxins). It acts as an excellent visceral therapeutic agent, systematically dismantling abdominal hardness, clearing cellular pathways, and nourishing depleted tissues without taxing an already weakened digestive tract.

Classical Indication

Gulma Roga (Abdominal tumors, lumps, phantom masses, or severe chronic distension, especially of Pitta and Kapha origin)

Ingredients

  • Abhrak Bhasma (Calcined Mica) – 1 part
  • Lauh Bhasma (Calcined Iron) – 1 part
  • Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulphur) – 1 part
  • Tankan Bhasma (Calcined Borax) – 2 parts
  • Sonth (Dry Ginger) – 2 parts
  • Kali Mirch (Black Pepper) – 2 parts
  • Pippali Churna (Long Pepper) – 2 parts

Ingredient Description

Abhrak Bhasma (Calcined Mica)

Abhrak Bhasma is a highly revered Rasayana (Rejuvenative) in Ayurveda that acts as a potent cellular rejuvenator. It balances all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), nourishes the deeper body tissues (Dhatus), relieves burning sensations (Daah), and restores strength and vitality in individuals suffering from long-standing weakness and chronic illness.

Lauh Bhasma (Calcined Iron)

Lauh Bhasma is traditionally used to manage Panduta (Anaemia) and tissue depletion. It enriches Rakta Dhatu (Blood Tissue), improves oxygen delivery to vital organs, enhances physical endurance, and restores overall strength without causing bowel stagnation. It also supports healthy metabolism and tissue regeneration.

Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulphur)

Shuddha Gandhak possesses powerful Rasayana and Yogavahi (Bio-enhancing) properties that enhance the therapeutic action of accompanying ingredients. It supports internal detoxification, helps eliminate systemic pathogens, promotes healthy skin, and assists in breaking down accumulated toxins (Ama) within the body.

Tankan Bhasma (Calcined Borax)

Tankan Bhasma is valued for its Tikshna (Sharp) and Lekhana (Scraping) properties. It helps break down hardened abdominal masses, liquefies thick and stagnant mucus, reduces abdominal rigidity (Gulma), and supports healthy respiratory and digestive functions.

Sonth (Dry Ginger)

Sonth is Katu (Pungent) in taste and possesses Ushna Virya (Hot Potency). It stimulates Jatharagni (Digestive Fire), improves digestion, metabolizes accumulated Ama (Undigested Toxins), relieves abdominal discomfort, and reduces inflammation. Its warming nature supports healthy circulation and enhances the effectiveness of the formulation.

Kali Mirch (Black Pepper)

Kali Mirch is renowned for its micro-penetrating action that clears obstructed Srotas (Body Channels). Rich in Piperine, it significantly enhances the absorption and bioavailability of minerals such as Lauh Bhasma and other therapeutic ingredients, while also stimulating digestion, metabolism, and respiratory health.

Pippali Churna (Long Pepper)

Pippali Churna performs a dual therapeutic role by stimulating digestion while simultaneously acting as a Rasayana (Rejuvenative) for the metabolic system. It repairs weakened intestinal mucosa, enhances nutrient absorption, promotes smooth downward movement of Vata Dosha (Vata Anulomana), and supports healthy respiratory and digestive functions.

Medicinal Properties

Gulma Roga (Abdominal Masses & Hardness)

This formulation is traditionally administered to soften, break down, and gradually reduce Gulma (abdominal masses, deep-seated bloating, and visceral hardness), particularly those associated with aggravated Pitta and Kapha doshas. For enhanced therapeutic benefit, it may be administered along with Gulmakalanala Rasa or Varunadi Kashayam to accelerate the resolution of abdominal masses. As an Anupana (Adjuvant), a warm decoction of Hingwashtak Churna or Dashmoola Kashayam is recommended to regulate Vata movement and relieve visceral rigidity.

Mandagni (Weak Digestive Fire)

The formulation helps rekindle weakened Jatharagni (Digestive Fire), promoting efficient digestion, reducing flatulence, and relieving abdominal distension. Its digestive action may be enhanced when used in combination with Chitrakadi Vati or Agnitundi Vati. Fresh ginger juice mixed with honey or warm cumin (Jeera) water serves as an effective Anupana (Adjuvant), helping stimulate digestive activity and improve metabolic function.

Daah (Internal Burning Sensation)

By balancing aggravated Pitta, this formulation helps relieve internal burning sensations and excessive metabolic heat. Its cooling and mineral-rich composition assists in soothing inflamed tissues and maintaining acid balance. For improved results, it may be combined with Kamadudha Rasa (with Mukta) or Praval Pishti. As an Anupana (Adjuvant), rock sugar (Mishri) water or coriander seed (Dhaniya) decoction provides additional cooling and soothing effects.

Panduta (Anaemia & Malnutrition)

The formulation supports healthy blood formation by improving Rakta Dhatu, enhancing haemoglobin levels, and correcting nutritional deficiencies associated with poor intestinal absorption. For optimal haematinic benefits, it may be administered with Punarnava Mandur or Dhatri Loha. Fresh Amalaki (Indian Gooseberry) juice or warm milk is recommended as an Anupana (Adjuvant) to enhance iron absorption and tissue nourishment.

Nirbalata (General Debility)

As a rejuvenating formulation, it helps restore strength, improve energy levels, and nourish depleted body tissues (Dhatus). It is particularly beneficial in conditions of chronic weakness and convalescence. Its restorative action may be enhanced when combined with Ashwagandharishta or Vasant Kusumakar Ras. Administration with a spoonful of Cow’s Ghee or a glass of lukewarm milk as an Anupana (Adjuvant) promotes deeper nourishment and supports overall vitality.

Impact On Dosha

Gulmahar Ras primarily pacifies Kapha and Vata doshas through its intense pungent (Katu) flavor profiles, heating (Ushna) potency, and sharp, channel-clearing (Tikshna) actions. Concurrently, the inclusion of Abhrak Bhasma along with cooling vectors ensures that excess Pitta dosha is regulated, successfully neutralizing localized burning sensations and internal inflammation.

Indications

  • Gulma Roga (Visceral Lumps, Phantom Tumors, and Severe Abdominal Hardness)
  • Mandagni (Sluggish Metabolic Fire / Anorexia)
  • Daah (Internal Burning and Inflammatory Sensations)
  • Panduta (Anaemia and Associated Pale Complexion)
  • Nirbalata (Chronic Weakness and Loss of Tissue Mass)

Dosage

1-2 Masha (Approximately 1-2 grams total daily), typically divided and taken throughout the day as advised by an Ayurvedic physician.

Anupana (Adjuvant)

To be consumed 3 times a day mixed thoroughly with Butter or Cow’s Ghee along with Honey.

Conclusion

Gulmahar Ras represents a masterful equilibrium within classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral pharmacology, specifically engineered to dismantle stubborn abdominal masses while concurrently revitalizing depleted tissue channels. By joining the scraping, alkaline power of calcined borax and Trikatu spices with the deeply nourishing, hematinic properties of mica and iron calx, it breaks the cycle of poor digestion, toxic buildup, and localized physical stagnation. Whether dissolving dense gastrointestinal obstructions, rekindling a faded digestive fire, or reversing advanced states of systemic debility and anemia, its deeply penetrative yet rejuvenating action safely restores visceral health and physical vigor. This formulation stands as a premier classical solution for complex abdominal disorders, metabolic renewal, and long-term tissue fortification.
