Hartal Bhasma (Orpiment Ash) – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Hartal Bhasma is a classical Ayurvedic mineral preparation obtained from Hartal (orpiment, primarily arsenic trisulfide). It is processed through rigorous Shodhana (purification) and Marana (incineration) procedures to detoxify the raw mineral and convert it into a fine therapeutic Bhasma. This formulation is valued in Rasashastra for its ability to clear deep-seated stagnation by breaking down ama (metabolic waste) and unblocking channels (srotas). Unlike many herbals, Hartal Bhasma’s unique composition and classical use harness its penetrating potency for specific internal and external applications.

Ingredients

  1. Hartal (Raw Orpiment – Arsenic Trisulfide, As₂S₃)
  2. Shodhana Dravyas: kushmanda , tankan, jambiri nimbu swaras, shalamli swaras,, Kanji (rice gruel), Triphala Kwatha and tila taila
  3. Bhavana & Marana Media: palashmultwak, mahishi mutra, punarnava swaras/kshar, pipal twak kwath, aloe vera juice.

Description

Hartal is a deep orange-yellow mineral historically used in Ayurveda after extensive processing to remove toxicity. On purification and repeated incineration, it yields a fine ash (Bhasma) with reduced arsenic toxicity and increased bio-assimilation. Classical texts describe its katu (pungent), kashaya (astringent) and tikta (bitter) rasa, ushna (hot) virya, and metabolic action that clears ama and pacifies kapha stagnation. This transformation has been validated by scientific scrutiny, which shows that processing significantly alters particle properties, enhancing therapeutic acceptability.

Method of Preparation

Classical Preparation of Hartal Bhasma Involves:

Shodhana (Detoxification)

1. The best quality hartal (arsenic trisulfide) should be ground into a fine powder, the size of rice grains, and placed in a cloth bag. This bag should then be suspended in a swing-like apparatus and subjected to steaming for one 3-hour period each, successively, in lime-mixed kanji (fermented rice gruel), pumpkin juice, sesame oil, and triphala decoction. That is, first steam it for one 3-hour period in kanji mixed with lime, then for one 3-hour period in pumpkin juice, then for one 3-hour period in sesame oil, and finally for one 3-hour period in triphala decoction. After each steaming, wash it with hot water. This process of steaming in four different liquids for a total of four 3-hour periods ensures the proper purification of the arsenic trisulfide. During the oil purification, the bag containing the arsenic trisulfide should be suspended four fingers’ breadth above the oil. For steaming, use one part arsenic trisulfide and eight parts liquid. The cloth of the bag should be strong enough to prevent any of the arsenic trisulfide from escaping, while allowing the liquid to penetrate through its pores.

2. Tie a coarse powder of high-quality orpiment in a cloth bundle and place it in a dolayantra (a type of steaming apparatus) containing lemon juice. Steam the bundle for one prahara (approximately three hours). Similarly, steam it for another prahara using the liquid obtained from (grah dhoom) household soot, then remove it and wash it with warm water. This process purifies the orpiment.

(Ras tarangni 11/13-18)

3. In a swing apparatus, suspend a bundle containing powdered orpiment in the juice of the Shalmali (silk cotton tree) root and subject it to steaming for one yama (three hours). This process of steaming for one yama purifies the orpiment. Alternatively, purifying orpiment can also be achieved by triturating it with the juice of the roots of the shalamali root juice for seven days.

Marana (Calcination)

1. Prepare a decoction of Palash root and reduce it to a thick consistency (like honey). With this concentrated decoction, triturate purified arsenic trisulfide ( hartal) three times. Then, grind it with buffalo urine and form small discs. Dry these discs and place them in a sealed earthen pot. Heat this pot over a fire of ten cow dung cakes. After heating, remove the contents, triturate them again, and then heat them again over ten cow dung cakes. Repeat this process twelve times. This method yields a superior ash of arsenic trisulfide (hartal).

(र. र. स. ३/७५.)

2. Triturate purified orpiment in a mortar with the juice of Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) for one day and then form flat discs and dry them. Fill a pot or vessel halfway with Punarnava kshar, place these discs inside, and then fill the pot completely with more Punarnava kshar up to the rim. Now, place this pot on a stove and heat it continuously for five days, gradually increasing the heat from low to medium to high. In this way, a superior quality orpiment ash is prepared.

(Ayurveda Prakash 2/184-187)

3. Take 5 tolas (60 grams) of purified orpiment and grind it in a mortar with ten times its weight (600 grams) of calotropis procera latex. Form small discs from the mixture and dry them in the sun. In a calcination apparatus (i.e., an earthen pot), fill half of the pot with finely sifted ash of Palash (Butea monosperma). Place the orpiment discs on top of this ash, and then fill the remaining space in the pot up to the neck with the same Butea monosperma ash. Heat the pot over a fire for four periods of time (approximately 12 hours). This process yields a white ash of orpiment.

Properties of Hartal Bhasma

Hariwal Bhasma destroys chronic syphilis, gout, erysipelas, cracked heels, eczema, various types of leprosy, hemorrhoids, intermittent fever, syphilis-related diseases, epilepsy, fistula, boils, ulcers, extremely dangerous eruptions, and other disorders caused by vatrakta.

(Ras Trangni 11/52-54)
