Khanjanikari Rasa – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Reference – Rasatantrasaar & Siddhaprayog Sangraha / Vatavyadhi / Chapter 18 / Formulation 7

Abstract

In contemporary neurology and internal medicine, chronic, severe, and debilitating neuro-motor and neuro-vascular disorders—ranging from hemiplegia, facial paralysis, and Parkinsonian tremors to spasticity, spinal deformities, and chronic neuralgias—present immense therapeutic hurdles. Conventional interventions often rely on symptomatic muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants, neuro-analgesics, and physical therapy, which frequently provide only partial functional recovery, carry potential long-term systemic toxicities, and fail to repair damaged nerve pathways or clear metabolic neuro-vascular blockages.

Ayurveda conceptualizes these severe neuromuscular conditions predominantly through the lens of profound Vata disorders (Vatavyadhi), where aggravated Vata—often accompanied by systemic toxins (Ama), blood impurities (Rakta-dushti), or metallic and organic venoms—lodges within the nerve pathways (Vatavahini Nadi) and musculoskeletal channels (Mamsavaha Srotas). This pathology leads to nerve degeneration, muscular atrophy, vascular dysfunction, loss of motor control, and intractable pain.

Khanjanikari Rasa is an authoritative classical herbo-mineral formulation specifically engineered to manage severe neuromuscular degenerative disorders, alleviate intense Vata-induced neuralgias, restore motor function, and rebuild vascular integrity. By combining purified Kuchila (Strychnos nux-vomica), Malla Sindoor, and Rajat Bhasma (Calcinated Silver) with multi-stage liquid triturating media (Bhavana) using Arjun bark decoction, it acts as a deep-acting nerve stimulant, neuro-tonic, cardiac protector, and blood purifier capable of resolving chronic paralytic states, spinal distortions, and deep-seated neuro-vascular toxicity.

Introduction

Khanjanikari Rasa is a classical, highly potent herbo-mineral formulation indicated for the comprehensive management of all varieties of severe neurological, muscular, and vascular disorders caused by aggravated Vata dosha. Belonging to the specialized Rasa Kalpa category of Rasashastra, it merges heavy mineral and metal processing with targeted neuro-active botanicals.

The therapeutic superiority of Khanjanikari Rasa stems from its unique multi-stage processing and specialized herbal levigation (Bhavana). By triturating purified neuro-stimulants and heavy mineral preparations with the cardioprotective and microchannel-clearing decoction of Arjun bark, the formulation maximizes cellular bioavailability, targets the central and peripheral nervous systems, strengthens blood vessels, and eliminates systemic poisons lodged within the blood tissue.

Classical Indication

All varieties of severe neurological, neuromuscular, and motor channel disorders (Vatavyadhi), including Ardita (Facial Paralysis), Khanjavata (Limping/Monoplegia/Paraplegia), Kampavata (Parkinsonism/Tremors), Bahirayama & Antarayama (Opisthotonous & Emprosthotonous/Spinal Spasms), Kaubja (Kyphosis/Hunchback), Khalli (Severe Muscle Cramps/Spasms), Vatashoola (Neuralgic Pain), and chronic, refractory Pakshavadha (Hemiplegia/Stroke Paralysis), alongside blood-borne venoms and syphilitic neuro-vascular pathologies (Upadansha).

Neuromuscular Pathologies And Etiology

Severe neurological disorders arise primarily from acute or chronic degeneration of Vata pathways, blockage of micro-circulation by metabolic toxins (Ama), blood degradation, or systemic entry of blood-borne poisons (Visha). These lead to impaired signal transmission from Vata centers, muscular weakness, stiffness, contractions, or complete loss of sensation and motor movement.

Specific Disease Characteristics

  • Ardita (Facial Paralysis): Distortion of the face, impairment of facial motor functions, speech alteration, and loss of neural control over facial expressions.
  • Khanjavata (Limping/Paralysis of Lower Limbs): Instability, structural or neural gait impairment, leg weakness, and limping.
  • Kampavata (Parkinsonism/Tremors): Involuntary rhythmic shaking, muscle rigidity, sluggish movement, and loss of neural coordination.
  • Bahirayama & Antarayama (Spinal Distortions): Severe involuntary spastic contractions causing backward bending (Opisthotonous) or forward bending (Emprosthotonous) of the body and spine.
  • Kaubja (Hunchback/Kyphosis): Chronic Vata-induced structural spinal curvature and vertebral column weakness.
  • Khalli (Muscle Spasms/Cramps): Excruciating, sudden, involuntary painful contractions of the calves, feet, hands, or back muscles.
  • Vatashoola (Neuralgic Pain): Sharp, shooting, lancinating, or piercing pain following nerve distribution pathways.
  • Purana Pakshavadha (Chronic Hemiplegia): Long-standing paralysis affecting one side of the body characterized by muscular atrophy, loss of tone, and structural neural degeneration.

Ingredients

  1. Shuddha Kuchila Churna (Strychnos nux-vomica): Fine cloth-sifted powder of Kuchila purified in Castor Oil (Erand Taila) – 1 Equal Part (Sambhag)
  2. Malla Sindoor: Mercurial-Arsenic Sublimates (Prepared as per Rasa Tantra Sara Vol. 1, Method 2) – 1 Equal Part (Sambhag)
  3. Rajat Bhasma: Calcined Silver Ash – 1 Equal Part (Sambhag)
  4. Arjuna Bark Decoction (Terminalia arjuna): Decoction of Arjuna bark – Quantity Sufficient for 7 Triturations (Bhavanas)

Ingredient Description

1. Shuddha Kuchila Churna (Purified Nux-Vomica)

Processed specifically with Erand Taila (castor oil), it acts as an exceptionally powerful stimulant to the central nervous system, spinal cord, and motor nerves. Within Khanjanikari Rasa, it rejuvenates deadened or sluggish neural pathways, relieves muscle paralysis, and acts as a potent Vata-pacifying pain reliever.

2. Malla Sindoor (Red Mercurial-Arsenic Preparation)

Functions as an intense bio-catalyst, deep-tissue penetrator (Sukshma Srotogami), and germicidal agent. It enhances arterial blood circulation, revitalizes exhausted motor centers, boosts muscular responsiveness, and cleanses severe blood-borne toxins (Visha) from systemic channels.

3. Rajat Bhasma (Calcinated Silver)

Serves as a potent neuro-protective, brain tonic (Medhya), and Pitta-Vata pacifying coolant. It strengthens the brain, spinal cord, and delicate nerve sheaths, preventing nerve hyperexcitability, heat buildup, or exhaustion caused by the intense stimulation of Kuchila and Malla Sindoor.

4. Arjuna Bark Decoction (Terminalia Arjuna)

Utilized as the liquid processing medium (Bhavana Dravya) for 7 continuous triturating cycles. It contributes profound cardioprotective (Hridya), micro-vascular repairing, and anti-inflammatory properties, strengthening blood vessels (Raktavahiniya) and balancing systemic circulation.

Method Of Preparation

  • Accurate Weighing & Sifting: Take fine cloth-sifted powder of Kuchila (purified using Erand Taila), Malla Sindoor (prepared per Rasa Tantra Sara Vol. 1, 2nd method), and Rajat Bhasma in precise equal quantities (Sambhag).
  • Initial Trituration: Combine all three finely processed ingredients uniformly in a clean mortar (Khalva Yantra) to achieve a homogeneous mixture.
  • Decoction Processing (Bhavana): Prepare a fresh decoction (Kwath) of Arjuna bark. Add the decoction to the mixture in a quantity sufficient to submerge it and triturate thoroughly until completely dry. Repeat this trituration process for a total of 7 individual cycles (7 Bhavanas).
  • Pill Formation: Once a uniform, smooth, and pliable medicinal mass is formed, roll it into small pills weighing half a Ratti each (approximately 62.5mg). Allow them to shade dry and store in an airtight container.

Medicinal Properties

  • Deep Neuromuscular & Nerve Stimulation (Vatanadi Paushtik & Uttejak): Directly stimulates sluggish, degraded, or paralyzed motor and sensory nerves. It strengthens nerve pathways (Vatavahiniya), resolves nerve exhaustion, restores signal transmission, and improves overall muscle tone.
  • Comprehensive Paralysis Management: Targets the core pathogenesis of severe paralytic conditions such as facial palsy (Ardita), lower limb weakness (Khanjavata), and long-standing hemiplegia (Purana Pakshavadha), encouraging structural and functional recovery of impaired limbs.
  • Vascular & Structural Restoration: Corrects structural damage and pathological abnormalities in blood vessels (Raktavahiniya) and muscle tissue (Mamsapesi). By reinforcing vascular walls and promoting healthy blood flow, it halts tissue atrophy and muscular contractures.
  • Blood Purification & Toxic Poison Neutralization: Exerts profound blood-cleansing (Raktashodhak) and antivenomous effects. It actively neutralizes deep-seated blood toxins, including chronic syphilitic poisons (Jeerna Upadansha Visha) lodged in the blood and neurological tissue.
  • Cardioprotective & Anthelmintic Support (Hridya & Kriminashak): Nourishes and protects the cardiac musculature via Arjuna infusion while eliminating internal parasites and clearing systemic micro-channel obstructions.

Impact On Dosha

Khanjanikari Rasa is a specialized Vata-Kaphahara and Neuro-protective formulation with specific emphasis on Vata-Rakta regulation:

  • Vata Dosha: Strongly pacifies severely aggravated, erratic, or degenerative Vata movements across motor channels, stopping neural tremors, muscle spasms, contractures, and shooting pains.
  • Kapha Dosha: Clears stagnant, heavy Kapha obstructions and metabolic wastes (Ama) blocking the micro-vascular channels of the nervous system.
  • Pitta Dosha & Rakta Dhatu: Calms vascular inflammation and cleanses toxins from the blood tissue (Rakta Dhatu) through the synergistic action of Rajat Bhasma and Arjuna.

Indications
