Nirgundyadi Kashaya (2) – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Nirgundyadi Kashaya is an Ayurvedic herbal decoction prepared from the roots of Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Eranda (Ricinus communis), and Koranta (Barleria prionitis). The formulation is indicated for Vriddhi (abnormal enlargement or swelling, including certain scrotal conditions described in Ayurveda). Eranda Taila (castor oil) is administered as the specified additive. The formulation brings together three root-based botanicals with distinct properties described in Ayurveda. Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) is valued for its use in Vata-pacifying preparations, while Eranda (Ricinus communis) is recognised for its role in managing Vata-predominant conditions. The roots are boiled in water to prepare a Kashaya (herbal decoction), which is filtered and administered lukewarm. The addition of Eranda Taila (castor oil) follows the formulation’s stated method of use.

एरण्डतैलसंयुक्तं पाययेत् वृद्धिशान्तये ॥ (Sahasrayogam)

Water boiled with the roots of Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Eranda (Ricinus communis), and Koranta (Barleria prionitis) is described for administration with Eranda Taila (castor oil) to support the management of Vriddhi (abnormal enlargement or swelling).

Ingredients Of Nirgundyadi Kashaya

The formulation contains the following ingredients:

  1. Nirgundi root (Vitex negundo) – 1 part
  2. Eranda root (Ricinus communis) – 1 part
  3. Koranta root (Barleria prionitis) – 1 part
  4. Water – 16 times the total quantity of the roots

Method Of Preparation

  • Collect the prescribed quantities of Nirgundi root (Vitex negundo), Eranda root (Ricinus communis), and Koranta root (Barleria prionitis).
  • Clean the roots and prepare a coarse powder.
  • Add water in a quantity equal to 16 times the total weight of the powdered roots.
  • Boil the mixture over a controlled flame until the liquid reduces to one-eighth of its initial volume.
  • Filter the decoction through a clean cloth to remove the remaining plant material.
  • Allow the filtered Kashaya to become lukewarm before administration.
  • Administer Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) with the decoction according to the prescribing physician’s directions.

Fresh preparation according to the required dose helps maintain the intended concentration and consistency of the decoction.

Dose And Administration

  • Dose: 40 ml twice daily.
  • Dosage form: Herbal decoction (Kashaya).
  • Additive: Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil).
  • Administration: Lukewarm, according to the prescribing physician’s instructions.
  • Duration: Individualised according to the person’s condition and treatment plan.

Ayurvedic Properties Of The Ingredients

1. Nirgundi Root (Vitex negundo)

Nirgundi is described as having Tikta (bitter) and Kashaya (astringent) tastes, Laghu (light) and Ruksha (dry) qualities, and Ushna Virya (hot potency). It helps pacify Vata and Kapha Doshas (functional principles governing movement and stability). Nirgundi is valued for its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties and is used in Ayurvedic care for Shoola (pain) and Shopha (swelling) associated with Vriddhi.

2. Eranda Root (Ricinus communis)

Eranda is described as having Madhura (sweet), Katu (pungent), and Kashaya (astringent) tastes, with Snigdha (unctuous) and Tikshna (sharp) qualities. It helps with Vata-Kapha pacification. Eranda root and Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) have distinct roles in Ayurvedic preparations, and the oil is

3. Koranta Root (Barleria prionitis)

Koranta is included in the prescribed root decoction for Vriddhi (abnormal enlargement or swelling described in Ayurveda). It has analgesic effects.

Vriddhi

Vriddhi means enlargement or increase and is used in Ayurveda to describe particular conditions involving abnormal enlargement of tissues or body regions. Depending on the context, the term can include scrotal enlargement and conditions involving the groin. Assessment considers the location and nature of the enlargement, pain, associated symptoms, and the person’s overall health. Nirgundyadi Kashaya is indicated for Vriddhi, with Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) specified as the additive. Because scrotal or groin enlargement can result from a hernia, hydrocele, infection, or other conditions, a medical examination is important to establish the cause and select appropriate treatment.

Ayurvedic Mode Of Action

The formulation’s Ayurvedic interpretation can be summarised as follows:

  • Nirgundyadi Kashaya → Nirgundi root (Vitex negundo) + Eranda root (Ricinus communis) + Koranta root (Barleria prionitis) → Vata-oriented Ayurvedic management → Individualized care for Vriddhi (abnormal enlargement or swelling)
  • Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) is valued for its use in pain and swelling, while Eranda (Ricinus communis) is recognised for its Vata-pacifying properties. Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) is included as the prescribed additive. This explanation reflects the Ayurvedic interpretation of the formulation rather than a proven mechanism for every condition described as Vriddhi.

Pathya And Apathya

Pathya (Recommended Practices)

  • Eat balanced meals suited to individual digestive needs.
  • Maintain adequate hydration, particularly if Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) causes increased bowel movements.
  • Maintain regular sleep and suitable physical activity according to medical advice.
  • Follow the prescribed dose and preparation method.

Apathya (Practices To Limit)

  • Avoid self-adjusting the quantity of Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil).
  • Avoid taking additional laxatives without professional advice.
  • Avoid delaying examination of a new or enlarging groin or scrotal swelling.
  • Avoid excessive straining and heavy lifting when groin or scrotal enlargement is present, until the cause has been assessed.

Precautions

  • Nirgundyadi Kashaya should be used under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician. Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) can cause diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, and fluid loss, so the dose requires careful assessment.
  • It should not be self-administered during pregnancy or when intestinal obstruction is suspected.
  • Sudden severe groin or scrotal pain, vomiting, fever, redness, or a swelling that becomes hard or cannot be reduced requires urgent medical evaluation. These symptoms can indicate a condition that needs prompt treatment.

Conclusion

Nirgundyadi Kashaya is an Ayurvedic root decoction prepared from Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Eranda (Ricinus communis), and Koranta, with Eranda Taila (Ricinus communis seed oil) as its specified additive. It is indicated for Vriddhi (abnormal enlargement or swelling described in Ayurveda). The formulation brings together botanicals valued for their Ayurvedic use in Vata-oriented care, with the castor oil forming an important part of its prescribed administration. Correct botanical identification, suitable preparation, and physician-directed dosing help ensure that the formulation is used appropriately as part of an individualised care plan.
