Sanjeevan Arka – Ingredients, Preparation, Uses & Dosage

Introduction

Sanjeevan Arka is a potent classical Ayurvedic formulation known for its fast-acting and revitalizing properties, traditionally prepared through the infusion of aromatic and therapeutic substances in purified spirit. As its name suggests, it functions like a “life-restoring elixir,” especially in acute digestive and systemic disturbances. Rich in carminative, stimulant, and antispasmodic qualities, it helps regulate digestion, control excessive bowel movements, and relieve abdominal discomfort. Its penetrating and quick-acting nature makes it particularly valuable in conditions like diarrhea, vomiting, and weakness. When used judiciously in small doses, Sanjeevan Arka supports rapid recovery and restores physiological balance effectively. Let;s discuss it in detail!

Ingredients

  • Opium – 4 grams
  • Small cardamom seeds – 2 ounces
  • Nutmeg – 2 ounces
  • Camphor – 4 ounces
  • Purified spirit (alcohol) – 20 ounces

Description of Ingredients

1. Opium (Papaver somniferum)

Known as Ahiphena, it is Grahi (anti-diarrheal) and Vyavayi (fast-acting). It instantly pacifies aggravated Vata, alleviating the “piercing” colic pain characteristic of Visuchika. It stabilizes the downward movement of Apana Vayu. Opium contains alkaloids like morphine and codeine that act on mu-opioid receptors in the GI tract. This decreases intestinal motility and increases sphincter tone, effectively stopping fluid loss in acute diarrhea and providing powerful analgesia for abdominal cramps.

2. Small Cardamom Seeds (Elettaria cardamomum)

Ela is Deepana (appetizer) and Ruchivardhaka (taste enhancer). It neutralizes Amavisha (toxins from undigested food) and re-establishes the kindling of Agni to treat Agnimandya. Cardamom contains volatile oils like cineole and limonene. These are carminative, helping to expel gas and reduce bloating. It stimulates the secretion of bile and gastric juices, which mechanically aids in the breakdown of heavy food (treating Ajeerna).

3. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)

Jatiphala is Ushna (hot) and Katu (pungent). It is specifically indicated for Atisara (diarrhea) and Visuchika because it absorbs excess moisture in the intestines while stimulating the digestive fire. It possesses antimicrobial and antispasmodic properties. The compound myristicin helps relax the smooth muscles of the gut, reducing the waves of pain in indigestion while inhibiting the growth of pathogens that cause gastrointestinal infections.

4. Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora)

Karpoora is Chedana (clearing) and Sheetala-veerya but with a unique ability to stimulate Agni. In Visuchika, it acts as a de-obstruent, clearing the channels blocked by Ama (undigested waste). Camphor acts as a mild local anesthetic and counter-irritant to the gastric mucosa. When ingested in controlled, diluted amounts, it produces a sensation of warmth that stimulates blood flow to the gut, aiding in the absorption of other herbs and rapidly cooling internal inflammation.

5. Purified Spirit (Alcohol)

Acts as a Madya base, serving as an Anupana (vehicle) that is Teekshna (penetrating). It helps the medicinal properties of the herbs reach the cellular level (Srotas) almost instantly. Ethanol acts as a solvent, extracting the essential oils and alkaloids from the solids to create a highly bioavailable tincture. It also serves as a preservative and provides a mild vasodilatory effect, which can be helpful in the initial stages of shock often seen in severe Visuchika.

Method of Preparation

  • Place all the ingredients in a bottle and keep it tightly closed for 2 weeks.
  • Shake the bottle 2–3 times daily.
  • After one week, filter through filter paper and add more purified spirit equal to the amount reduced.
