Shadang Paniya – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Shadang Paniya is a classical Ayurvedic medicated water preparation widely used in the management of febrile conditions associated with aggravated Pitta dosha. The name “Shadang” refers to the six ingredients used in the formulation, while “Paniya” denotes a medicated drink or therapeutic water. Unlike decoctions that are generally concentrated and administered in limited quantities, Shadang Paniya is designed to be consumed repeatedly throughout the day as a medicated drinking water. Ayurveda places great importance on proper hydration during fever. However, ordinary water may not always provide the desired therapeutic effect in conditions involving excessive heat, burning sensation, thirst, restlessness, and toxic accumulation within the blood and tissues. Shadang Paniya was formulated to address these concerns by combining cooling, detoxifying, digestive, and Pitta-pacifying herbs into a simple aqueous preparation. The formulation is particularly valued in Pittaja Jwara (Pitta-dominant fever), where symptoms such as excessive thirst, burning sensation, increased body temperature, irritability, sweating, and discomfort are commonly observed. The ingredients work together to support the elimination of accumulated toxins through sweat and urine while maintaining hydration and promoting wellness.

Ingredients

The following six ingredients are taken in equal proportions:

  1. Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus) – Nut Grass
  2. Pittapapada (Fumaria parviflora) – Fumitory
  3. Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides / Chrysopogon zizanioides) – Vetiver Root
  4. Rakta Chandana (Pterocarpus santalinus) – Red Sandalwood
  5. Netrabala (traditionally identified with Pavonia odorata) – Fragrant Swallow-Wort Group Herb
  6. Sonth (Zingiber officinale) – Dry Ginger

Method of Preparation

  • Clean all ingredients properly.
  • Prepare a coarse powder (Javakuta Churna) of herbs.
  • Take 1 Tola (approximately 12 g) of the coarse powder.
  • Add it to 128 Tola water (approximately 1.5 litres).
  • Heat the mixture gently over a moderate flame.
  • Classical instructions advise reducing the volume to half.
  • After boiling, allow the preparation to cool naturally.
  • Filter through a clean cloth and store in a clean vessel.

Practical Note

Although classical directions mention reducing the water to one-half, some traditional physicians observed that prolonged boiling may produce a relatively bitter taste, making it difficult for febrile patients to consume. Therefore, a practical method often employed is to boil the water until two or three good boils appear and then filter it immediately.

The vessel should remain covered during boiling to prevent contamination and preserve the aromatic volatile principles of the herbs.

Dosage

Shadang Paniya is generally used as drinking water throughout the day.

  • Morning preparation may be used until evening.
  • Evening preparation may be used until the following morning.

Fresh preparation is preferred every 12 hours to maintain quality and efficacy.

Ayurvedic Properties

Shadang Paniya exhibits several therapeutic actions:

  • Pitta Shamaka (pacifies aggravated Pitta)
  • Jwaraghna (supports fever management)
  • Dahahara (relieves burning sensation)
  • Trishnahara (reduces excessive thirst)
  • Mutrala (promotes healthy urination)
  • Swedajanana (supports physiological sweating)
  • Vishaghna (assists in eliminating toxic accumulations)
  • Deepana-Pachana (supports digestion and metabolism)

The combination of cooling and mildly digestive herbs makes it suitable for conditions where fever coexists with digestive impairment.

Therapeutic Uses

Pittaja Jwara (Pitta-Dominant Fever)

The principal indication of Shadang Paniya is Pittaja Jwara. Such fevers are characterized by heat, thirst, sweating, irritability, restlessness, and a sensation of internal burning. The formulation helps cool the system while maintaining hydration.

Excessive Thirst

Persistent thirst is a common symptom in febrile illnesses involving Pitta aggravation. The cooling ingredients help provide symptomatic relief and improve patient comfort.

Burning Sensation

The presence of Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) and Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides) contributes to the formulation’s traditional reputation for reducing internal heat and burning sensations.

Toxic Accumulation in Blood and Tissues

Ayurvedic texts describe certain fevers as involving the accumulation of toxins within the blood (Rakta) and Pitta. Shadang Paniya is traditionally believed to facilitate the removal of these accumulated impurities through perspiration and urine.

Supportive Care During Fever

Because it is administered as drinking water rather than a concentrated medicine, Shadang Paniya serves as an excellent supportive measure during prolonged febrile conditions.

Role of Individual Ingredients

Nagarmotha (Cyperus Rotundus)

Nagarmotha is regarded as one of the best herbs for fever management. It supports digestion, reduces fever-associated discomfort, and helps regulate aggravated Pitta and Kapha.

Pittapapada (Fumaria Parviflora)

Pittapapada is traditionally known for its blood-purifying and cooling actions. It is commonly used in Pitta disorders and febrile conditions.

Ushira (Vetiveria Zizanioides)

Vetiver root possesses cooling, aromatic, and refreshing properties. It is widely used in Ayurvedic formulations intended to reduce heat and thirst.

Rakta Chandana (Pterocarpus Santalinus)

Red Sandalwood is valued for its cooling action and support of healthy blood circulation. It helps calm excessive heat and irritation.

Netrabala (Pavonia Odorata)

Netrabala contributes cooling and aromatic qualities and is traditionally used in fever and Pitta-related disorders.

Sonth (Zingiber Officinale)

Although Dry Ginger is warming in nature, it is included to support digestion and prevent the formation of Ama (metabolic toxins), which often accompanies fever.

Administration Guidelines

Classical practitioners advised allowing the medicated water to cool naturally. Artificial cooling through fans or other means was discouraged. Natural cooling was believed to preserve the therapeutic qualities of the preparation. The medicated water should be prepared fresh and consumed within the recommended time frame. Stale preparations are generally avoided in Ayurvedic practice.

Precautions

  • Use under the supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
  • Persistent fever requires proper medical evaluation.
  • The formulation serves as supportive care and should not replace necessary medical treatment.
  • Fresh preparation is preferred to maintain therapeutic effectiveness.
  • Individuals with specific medical conditions should seek personalized guidance before use.

Conclusion

Shadang Paniya is a simple yet highly regarded Ayurvedic medicated water preparation formulated from Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus), Pittapapada (Fumaria parviflora), Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Rakta Chandana (Pterocarpus santalinus), Netrabala (Pavonia odorata), and Sonth (Zingiber officinale). Traditionally prescribed for Pittaja Jwara and associated symptoms such as burning sensation, thirst, excessive heat, and toxic accumulation, it serves both as a therapeutic drink and a supportive hydration measure. Its balanced combination of cooling and digestive herbs reflects Ayurveda’s holistic approach to fever management and restoration of well being.
