Shothnashak Ark
Introduction
Shothnashak Ark is a classical Ayurvedic external-use preparation formulated specifically for swelling, pain, bruises, clotted blood accumulation, and traumatic injuries. The term Shothnashak means “destroyer of inflammation or swelling,” which clearly reflects the therapeutic purpose of this medicinal extract. Prepared through herbal maceration in methylated spirit, this formulation acts as a penetrating anti-inflammatory and antiseptic liquid. Traditionally, it is applied locally using cotton over the affected area to reduce pain, improve circulation, and disperse stagnation. Its action is often compared to Tincture Iodine, as it serves as a topical remedy for injuries and inflammatory conditions while also supporting tissue healing.
Classical Ingredients
Primary Herbs and Minerals
- Sonth (Dry Ginger – Zingiber officinale) – 1 tola (≈ 11.6 g)
- Hirabol (Myrrh – Commiphora myrrha) – 2 tola (≈ 23 g)
- Aama Haldi (Mango Ginger – Curcuma amada) – 5 tola (≈ 58 g)
- Maidalakadi / Maidalkadi (traditional aromatic bark; identity varies regionally) – 5 tola (≈ 58 g)
Supportive Ingredients
(Each – 2½ tola ≈ 29 g)
- Usare Rewand / Usare Revan (traditional mineral or herb source; regional identity varies)
- Sajji Khar (Natural Sodium Carbonate / Alkali)
- Lodh / Lodhra (Symplocos Bark – Symplocos racemosa)
- Karpur (Camphor – Cinnamomum camphora)
- Fitkari (Alum – Potassium aluminum sulfate)
Solvent Medium
- Methylated Spirit – 24 ounces (≈ 710 ml)
Method of Preparation
All herbal and mineral ingredients are coarsely powdered (Jaukut). The powdered mixture is then placed into a glass bottle containing 24 ounces (≈ 710 ml) of methylated spirit. The bottle should be shaken 3–4 times daily to ensure proper extraction. Additionally, it is kept in sunlight for 1–2 hours daily to facilitate infusion. After one week, the liquid is filtered through cloth and transferred into a clean bottle for storage. The resulting Ark is used exclusively for external application.

This preparation works similarly to a topical anti-inflammatory tincture. Ginger and mango ginger improve local circulation and reduce pain. Myrrh offers antiseptic and healing support. Camphor provides cooling-penetrating action, while alum and alkalis contribute cleansing and astringent properties. The alcohol base acts as an efficient solvent, helping active compounds penetrate deeply into tissues. This combination makes it highly effective in reducing swelling, bruising, and discomfort associated with trauma.
Comparison with Tincture Iodine
Traditionally, this formulation is said to function like Tincture Iodine, meaning it acts as a local antiseptic and inflammation-reducing agent. However, unlike synthetic preparations, Shothnashak Ark combines multiple plant-based and mineral actions, offering both symptom relief and tissue support.
Precautions
- For external use only
- Do not ingest
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes
- Patch test before use on sensitive skin
- Keep away from flames due to alcohol content
- Store in tightly sealed bottle
Conclusion
Shothnashak Ark is a powerful classical external preparation for swelling, pain, bruises, and traumatic inflammation. Its herbal-mineral composition in the spirit base creates a fast-acting topical remedy with deep tissue penetration. As a traditional alternative to modern antiseptic tinctures, it remains a valuable Ayurvedic formulation for first-aid and musculoskeletal care.
