Triphala Ark
Introduction
Triphala Ark is a classical Ayurvedic distillate preparation made from Triphala, one of the most respected herbal combinations in Ayurveda. The word Triphala means “three fruits,” referring to the combination of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis). This herbal formulation has been widely used for maintaining digestive strength, purifying the blood, improving metabolism, and supporting healthy elimination. Ark preparations in Ayurveda are prepared through a distillation process known as Arka Kalpana, in which the volatile and water-soluble active principles of herbs are extracted in a subtle and easily absorbable liquid form. Triphala Ark is considered lighter, faster acting, and easier to digest than heavy decoctions or powders. It is especially beneficial in chronic metabolic disorders, skin diseases, digestive disturbances, and conditions caused by accumulation of toxins (Ama). This preparation is traditionally valued for balancing all the three doshas especially Kapha dosha and Pitta dosha while gently regulating Vata dosha through proper bowel cleansing and digestive correction.
Ingredients
The following ingredients are used in the preparation of Triphala Ark:
- Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) – Chebulic Myrobalan
- Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) – Belleric Myrobalan
- Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) – Indian Gooseberry
Quantity
- Triphala – 2½ seer (approximately 2.3–2.5 kg)
- Water – 20 seer (approximately 18–19 liters)
The prepared distillate is collected in approximately 20 bottles according to the classical method.
Method Of Preparation
- Equal parts of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) are taken and coarsely powdered (Jaukut Churna).
- Around 2 1⁄2 seer (approximately 2.4 kg) of the coarse Triphala mixture is soaked overnight in 20 seer (approximately 18–19 liters) of water.
- On the following morning, the soaked material is transferred into a traditional distillation apparatus known as Bhabka Yantra.
- The mixture is heated gently, and the vapors are condensed carefully to obtain the distilled extract known as Triphala Ark.
- The collected Ark is filtered and stored in clean glass bottles for medicinal use.
The preparation should always be stored in airtight containers away from direct sunlight to maintain potency.
Dosage and Administration
- Dose: 2 to 8 tola (approximately 24–96 ml)
- Frequency: 3–4 times daily according to the condition
- It may be administered alone or mixed with an equal quantity of water.
The dosage should be adjusted according to age, digestive capacity, and disease severity under Ayurvedic supervision

Benefits and Uses
1. Helpful in Prameha and Madhumeha (Urinary Disorders and Diabetes)
Triphala Ark is traditionally used in Prameha and Madhumeha (Diabetes Mellitus) because it helps regulate metabolism and supports proper tissue nourishment. It may assist in reducing excessive urination, sluggish metabolism, and accumulation of unhealthy fat tissues.
The antioxidant-rich nature of Amalaki (Emblica officinalis) and cleansing action of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) help maintain healthier metabolic activity.
2. Blood Purification and Skin Health
This Ark is considered an excellent Rakta Shodhak (blood purifier). It is beneficial in:
- Acne
- Itching
- Eczema
- Chronic skin disorders
- Fungal infections
- Pama (scabies-like conditions)
- Kushtha (chronic skin diseases)
By improving digestion and eliminating toxins from the bloodstream, it helps improve skin complexion and natural glow.
3. Supports Digestion and Relieves Constipation
Triphala Ark improves digestive fire (Agni) without causing excessive heat. It is useful in:
- Indigestion
- Loss of appetite
- Flatulence
- Abdominal heaviness
- Constipation
Its mild bowel-cleansing action helps remove accumulated waste material while supporting healthy intestinal function.
4. Useful in Obesity and Excess Sweating
The formulation is traditionally recommended in:
- Medovriddhi (obesity)
- Excessive perspiration
- Foul body odor
By correcting metabolism and removing toxins, it helps maintain internal cleanliness and healthier body function.
5. Beneficial in Liver Disorders and Jaundice
Triphala Ark supports liver function and is traditionally used in:
- Pandu (anemia-like disorders)
- Kamala (jaundice)
- Sluggish liver function
The detoxifying nature of Triphala helps improve bile regulation and supports healthier digestion and nutrient assimilation.
6. Useful in Chronic Inflammatory Conditions
Ayurveda describes Triphala Ark as beneficial in:
- Amavata (rheumatic disorders)
- Vatarakta (gout-like conditions)
- Chronic inflammatory disorders
Its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory actions help reduce toxin accumulation responsible for joint discomfort and stiffness.
Modern studies on Triphala indicate the presence of important phytochemicals such as:
- Tannins
- Gallic acid
- Ellagic acid
- Vitamin C
- Flavonoids
- Polyphenols
These compounds demonstrate antioxidant, digestive-supportive, antimicrobial, and detoxifying properties. Triphala is widely studied for its role in supporting gut health, metabolism, immunity, and skin wellness. Because Ark preparations are lighter and rapidly absorbable, Triphala Ark may provide quicker systemic action compared to heavier formulations.
Precautions
- Excessive use may lead to loose motions in sensitive individuals.
- Patients with severe dehydration should use it cautiously.
- Pregnant women should take it only under medical supervision.
- It should not replace prescribed treatment for serious metabolic disorders without professional guidance.z
