Ushiradi Kashaya (2) – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Ushiradi Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic decoction indicated primarily in the management of Raktarshas (bleeding piles/bleeding hemorrhoids). The formulation is composed of cooling, haemostatic, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-healing herbs that help control rectal bleeding while reducing burning sensation, inflammation, and discomfort associated with piles. Unlike formulations that primarily act by improving digestion or correcting bowel movements, Ushiradi Kashaya mainly pacifies aggravated Pitta Dosha and purifies vitiated Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue), which are considered the principal pathological factors responsible for bleeding hemorrhoids. The ingredients of Ushiradi Kashaya possess Stambhana (haemostatic), Rakta Prasadana (blood-purifying), Pitta Shamaka (Pitta-pacifying), Daha Prashamana (relieves burning sensation), and Vrana Ropana (wound-healing) properties. These actions help reduce excessive bleeding, soothe inflamed anorectal tissues, promote healing of damaged mucosa, and improve overall vascular health. The formulation is mentioned in classical Ayurvedic texts and is valued for providing symptomatic relief in bleeding piles without causing excessive dryness or constipation. The combination of cooling herbs such as Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Chandana (Santalum album), and Padmakesara (Nelumbo nucifera) with healing herbs like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica), and Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) makes it particularly suitable for patients suffering from recurrent bleeding associated with Pitta dosha predominance.

Classical Reference

उशीरकिञ्जल्कमृणालशीतशतावरीवत्सवृषाम्बुदोत्थम् ।
रक्तार्शसां हन्ति बलं च तोयं कालारिमेदोत्थभीरुजं वा।। (Sahasrayogam)

Another classical reading mentions: “वृषाभयोत्थम्” in place of “वृषाम्बुदोत्थम्.”

This verse describes two formulations. The first is Ushiradi Kashaya, which is indicated for Raktarshas (bleeding piles), while the second is Kalarimedadi Kashaya, another formulation recommended for the same condition.

Ingredients

Ushiradi Kashaya contains the following ingredients in equal proportion (1 part each):

  1. Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides) – Vetiver
  2. Padmakesara (Nelumbo nucifera) – Lotus stamen
  3. Kamala Nala (Nelumbo nucifera) – Lotus stem (Lotus rhizome stalk)
  4. Chandana (Santalum album) – Sandalwood
  5. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) – Wild Asparagus
  6. Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica) – Kurchi
  7. Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) – Malabar Nut
  8. Musta (Cyperus rotundus) – Nut Grass

Water: Sixteen times (16 parts) the total quantity of coarse herbal powder.

Method of Preparation

All ingredients are cleaned, dried, and converted into a coarse powder. Equal quantities of each herb are mixed together. Water is added in the proportion of 16 parts to the total quantity of the herbal mixture. The mixture is boiled gently until the volume is reduced to one-eighth of the original quantity. The prepared decoction is then filtered through a clean cloth and administered in a lukewarm state.

Dose

The classical recommended dose is 40 ml, twice daily (B.D.) or as directed by an Ayurvedic physician.

Ayurvedic Properties

Ushiradi Kashaya exhibits multiple therapeutic actions that make it beneficial in disorders involving aggravated Pitta and Rakta.

  • Pitta Shamaka (Pacifies aggravated Pitta)
  • Rakta Prasadana (Purifies blood)
  • Rakta Stambhana (Controls bleeding)
  • Daha Prashamana (Relieves burning sensation)
  • Vrana Ropana (Promotes wound healing)
  • Shothahara (Reduces inflammation)
  • Grahi (Improves bowel consistency)
  • Sheeta Virya (Cooling in potency)

These properties collectively help arrest bleeding, reduce inflammation, and promote healing of anorectal tissues.

Therapeutic Benefits of Ushiradi Kashaya

1. Controls Bleeding in Hemorrhoids

The primary indication of Ushiradi Kashaya is Raktarshas (bleeding piles). Herbs such as Padmakesara (Nelumbo nucifera), Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Chandana (Santalum album), and Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) possess natural haemostatic properties that help reduce excessive bleeding from swollen hemorrhoidal veins. Regular administration supports restoration of normal vascular integrity and minimizes recurrent episodes of bleeding.

2. Pacifies Pitta Dosha

Bleeding piles are generally associated with aggravated Pitta, leading to heat, redness, inflammation, and burning sensation around the anal region. Cooling herbs including Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Chandana (Santalum album), and Padmakesara (Nelumbo nucifera) effectively reduce internal heat and help restore the balance of Pitta Dosha.

3. Reduces Burning Sensation

Patients with bleeding hemorrhoids frequently experience burning pain before or after defecation. The Sheeta (cooling) nature of Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Chandana (Santalum album), and Kamala Nala (Nelumbo nucifera) provides soothing relief to inflamed tissues and helps reduce irritation.

4. Promotes Healing of Damaged Tissue

Repeated bleeding and inflammation can injure the delicate mucosal lining of the anal canal. Herbs such as Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) support tissue repair and accelerate healing through their nourishing and regenerative properties. This helps improve patient comfort and reduces recurrence of symptoms.

5. Reduces Inflammation

Inflammation contributes significantly to pain, swelling, and discomfort in hemorrhoids. Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica), and Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) possess anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce local swelling and improve anorectal health.

6. Supports Healthy Digestion

Although primarily indicated for bleeding piles, the presence of Musta (Cyperus rotundus) supports healthy digestion by improving digestive fire without aggravating Pitta. Proper digestion helps prevent the formation of Ama (metabolic toxins), which can otherwise contribute to disease progression.

7. Improves Bowel Function

Straining during bowel movements aggravates hemorrhoids. Kutaja (Holarrhena antidysenterica) exhibits Grahi (absorbent) properties that help normalize bowel consistency while maintaining intestinal health. This supports smoother defecation and reduces trauma to inflamed hemorrhoidal tissue.

8. Purifies Rakta Dhatu

According to Ayurveda, vitiation of Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue) is one of the important causes of bleeding disorders. Cooling herbs like Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Padmakesara (Nelumbo nucifera), and Chandana (Santalum album) help purify blood and reduce heat-related bleeding manifestations.

Indications

Ushiradi Kashaya is traditionally indicated in:

  • Raktarshas (Bleeding piles/Bleeding hemorrhoids)
  • Bleeding associated with aggravated Pitta
  • Burning sensation in the anorectal region
  • Inflamed hemorrhoids
  • Heat-related anorectal disorders
  • Pitta-Rakta imbalance

Classical Commentary

Classical Ayurvedic literature also describes another formulation immediately following Ushiradi Kashaya, known as Kalarimedadi Kashaya. It contains:

  • Krishna Babbula (Acacia nilotica) – Indian Gum Arabic Tree/Babul
  • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) – Wild Asparagus

The preparation method remains the same, using 16 parts of water, reducing it to one-eighth, and administering 40 ml twice daily. Like Ushiradi Kashaya, this formulation is also indicated in Raktarshas (bleeding piles) and serves as an alternative classical decoction.

Conclusion

Ushiradi Kashaya is a time-tested Ayurvedic decoction formulated specifically for the management of Raktarshas (bleeding hemorrhoids). Its carefully selected combination of cooling, haemostatic, anti-inflammatory, blood-purifying, and wound-healing herbs addresses both the symptoms and the Ayurvedic pathology of the disease. By pacifying aggravated Pitta, purifying Rakta Dhatu, controlling rectal bleeding, reducing burning sensation, and promoting tissue healing, the formulation offers comprehensive support in bleeding piles. When used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician, along with appropriate dietary and lifestyle modifications, Ushiradi Kashaya remains an effective classical formulation for maintaining anorectal health and improving the quality of life in individuals suffering from bleeding hemorrhoids.
