Agnikandadi Ghrita – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More

Introduction

Agnikandadi Ghrita is a classical Ayurvedic medicated ghee prepared by processing digestive, deepana (appetising), and arsha-hara (hemorrhoids relieving) dravyas (herbs) in a combination of coconut oil and buffalo ghee along with milk-based and alkaline media. The formulation is traditionally indicated in Arsha (hemorrhoids), Pravahika (chronic dysenteric condition), and Gudabhramsha (rectal prolapse). The preparation integrates Ushna (hot), Tikshna (penetrative), and srotoshodhaka (channel cleansing) substances with nourishing sneha (oil) dravyas to support correction of impaired digestion, regulation of Apana Vata (subtype of vata dosha), and stabilization of anorectal tissues.

The formulation describes preparation of medicated ghrita through classical Sneha Paka procedure using herbal decoction, milk, alkaline substances, and kalka dravyas. It is administered internally in measured doses with suitable anupana.

क्षीरोत्थं नालिकेरस्य तैलं पंचपलोन्मितम् ।
तावच्चैव घृतं ग्राह्यं महिषीक्षीरसम्भवम् ।।
तुषोदकं च गौक्षीरं प्रत्येकं कुडबत्रयम् ।
कल्कार्थं मधुकं देवदारु क्षारौ च पिप्पली।।
मयूरतुत्थं भार्डी च तथा षट्तण्डुलानि च।
कृष्णजीरं चाजमोदो माषत्रयमितं पृथक् ।।
संशोष्य सूरणं वन्यं चूर्णयेच्चित्रकं तथा।
तथा चालूपगं चापि माषषट्कमितं पृथक् ।।
पंचाशत्शङ्खनानां च मांसं दत्वा विपाचयेत्।
मन्दाग्नौ पाचयेत्सभ्यग्यदा कृष्णचतुर्दशी ।।
जप्त्वा धन्वंतरिं देवं अमायां गालयेच्च तत्।
सुदिने शुभनक्षत्रे मूलरोगनिवृत्तये ।।

Method Of Preparation

A decoction is prepared from Citraka Mula (Plumbago zeylanica), Sariva Mula (Hemidesmus indicus), and Vana Surana Kanda (Amorphophallus paeoniifolius) by boiling in water and reducing to one-fourth. The decoction is transferred to a suitable vessel and combined with Goksira and Tusodaka. Kalka is prepared from the specified kalka dravyas. Narikela Taila (Cocos nucifera) and Mahisha Ghrita are added to the mixture along with the prepared kalka and decoction.

The formulation is processed over mild heat following classical Sneha Paka (oil preparation) procedure, traditionally initiated on Krishna Chaturdashi and completed on Amavasya with invocation of Lord Dhanvantari. After completion of ghrita siddhi lakshanas, the preparation is filtered and stored in airtight containers.
