Ajwain Ark
Introduction
Ajwain Ark is a classical Ayurvedic distillate prepared from Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi), a highly valued medicinal seed known for its strong digestive, carminative, and antispasmodic properties. This preparation is widely used in conditions involving weak digestion, abdominal pain, gas accumulation, and metabolic sluggishness. In Ayurveda, Ajwain is considered a powerful Deepan-Pachan dravya, meaning it stimulates digestive fire and promotes the proper breakdown of food. Its distilled form, known as Ark, captures the volatile and therapeutic principles of the herb in a concentrated liquid that is easy to administer and rapidly absorbed. Ajwain Ark is especially beneficial in Mandagni (low digestive fire), Ajeerna (indigestion), Udarshool (abdominal colic), Gulma (abdominal swelling or gaseous lump), Aam Dosha (toxic undigested metabolites), Aruchi (loss of appetite), and disorders of Vata dosha and Kapha dosha.
Ingredients
- Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) – 2.5 seer (~2.3 kg)
- Water – 20 seer (~18.5–19 liters)
Method of Preparation
Cleaned Ajwain seeds are soaked overnight in twenty times water. This soaking softens the seeds and allows their volatile compounds to release effectively. The next morning, the soaked mixture is transferred into a Nadika Yantra (Bhapka / distillation apparatus) and heated on moderate flame. Through the distillation process, approximately 10 bottles of Ark are collected. The final distillate is stored in sterilized bottles for medicinal use.
This distilled preparation is known as Ajwain Ark.
