Usba Ark

Introduction

Usba Ark is a traditional Ayurvedic distillate prepared from Usba Deshi, identified in the given reference as Anantamool (Hemidesmus indicus), commonly known in English as Indian Sarsaparilla. This medicinal root has long been valued in Ayurveda and traditional medicine systems for its blood-purifying, skin-supportive, and detoxifying properties. The distilled preparation, known as Ark, captures the subtle volatile and water-soluble therapeutic principles of the herb in a light, absorbable liquid form. It is especially recommended in disorders involving Rakta Dushti (impure blood) and chronic skin diseases. Usba Ark is considered beneficial in persistent dermatological conditions such as Khaj-Khujli (itching and pruritus), Phoda-Phunsi (boils and eruptions), chronic inflammatory skin changes, and pigmentary disturbances. It is also described as useful in long-standing toxic states associated with Upadansha (syphilitic conditions in classical terminology) and Sujak (gonorrheal disorders), where systemic impurities manifest through skin lesions. Traditionally, its action is compared to Sarsaparilla, reflecting its recognized role as a superior blood purifier.

Ingredients

  • Usba Deshi / Anantamool (Hemidesmus indicus) – 2.5 seer (~2.3 kg)
  • Warm Water – 20 seer (~18.5–19 liters)

Method of Preparation

The roots of Anantamool are coarsely crushed (Jaukut form) to expose their internal medicinal constituents. These are soaked overnight in warm water. This pre-soaking enhances extraction and softens the fibrous root structure. The next morning, the soaked mixture is transferred into a Nadika Yantra (Bhapka / distillation apparatus). Using moderate heat, approximately 20 bottles of Ark are collected through the distillation process. The final distillate is stored in sterilized bottles and preserved for therapeutic use.

  • Rakta Shodhaka – blood purifier
  • Tvachya – supports healthy skin
  • Dahashamaka – relieves burning sensation
  • Vishaghna – counters toxic states
  • Pittahara – reduces excess heat
  • Kandughna – relieves itching

This preparation is beneficial in:

  • Rakta Dushti – blood impurities
  • Twak Vikara – skin disorders
  • Khaj-Khujli – itching / pruritus
  • Phoda-Phunsi – boils / eruptions
  • Red patches on skin

Clinical Importance

In long-standing skin disorders, Usba Ark is administered continuously over time to gradually purify the blood and improve skin clarity.

It is especially valuable in conditions where toxins circulate through the bloodstream and manifest as eruptions, discoloration, or persistent irritation.

The reference also notes usefulness in chronic conditions associated with venereal toxicity, where systemic cleansing is required.

Comparison with Sarsaparilla

The text compares its action to Sarsaparilla, a globally recognized detoxifying herb.

Like Sarsaparilla, Anantamool supports:

  • Skin healing
  • Blood cleansing
  • Inflammatory balance
  • Cooling of excess internal heat

This makes it an effective indigenous alternative.

Precautions

  • Use under supervision in severe systemic illness
  • Continue for sufficient duration for chronic conditions
  • Maintain dietary discipline for best results

Conclusion

Usba Ark is a refined Ayurvedic distillate of Hemidesmus indicus, offering valuable support in blood disorders, chronic skin diseases, and systemic toxic states. Its cooling, purifying, and restorative properties make it a respected traditional remedy for long-term internal cleansing and dermatological health. As a gentle yet effective preparation, it remains a significant contribution to classical Ayurvedic therapeutics.
