Bahushala Guda

Reference: Bhaishajya Ratnavali Arsha Rogadhikara 47 – 57

Bahushala Guda is an Ayurvedic medicine available in herbal jam form. It is mainly used in the treatment of piles, fistula, ascites, anemia, liver diseases etc. It Balances Vata and Pitta.

Ingredients

48 gms of each:-

  1. Trivrit – Operculina turpethum
  2. Tejohva – Zanthoxylum alatum
  3. Danti – Baliospermum montanum
  4. Gokshura – Small caltrops (whole plant) – Tribulus terrestris
  5. Chitraka – Lead Wort (root) – Plumbago zeylanica
  6. Shati – Curcuma zeodaria / Hedychium spicatum
  7. Gavakshi – Citrullus colocynthis
  8. Musta – Nut grass (root) – Cyperus rotundus
  9. Shunti – Ginger Rhizome – Zingiber officinalis
  10. Vidanga – False black pepper – Embelia ribes
  11. Haritaki – Chebulic Myrobalan fruit rind – Terminalia chebula
  12. Bhallataka – Purified Semecarpus anacardium – 384 g
  13. Vriddhadaru – Argyrea speciosa – 288 g
  14. Surana – Wild Yam – Amorphophallus campanulatus – 768 g
  15. Water for decoction – 24.576 liters, boiled and reduced to 6.144 liters.

  16. Guda – Jaggery – Saccharum officinarum – 18.432 kg
  17. Fine powders of:-

  18. Trivrit – Operculina turpethum
  19. Tejovati – Zanthoxylum alatum
  20. Surana – Wild Yam – Amorphophallus campanulatus
  21. Chitraka – Lead Wort (root) – Plumbago zeylanica
  22. Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum
  23. Twak – Cinnamon – Cinnamomum zeylanicum
  24. Maricha – Black pepper – Piper nigrum
  25. Gajapippali – Java Long Pepper (fruit) – Piper chaba

Method of Preparation

Herbs from 1-14 are taken and boiled in water 24.576 liters, until it reduced to 6.144 liters. Then 18.432 kg of jaggery is added with fine powder of rest of ingredients.

Dosage

Take 5 – 10 g once or twice a day before or after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor. It is traditionally given along with milk.

Side Effects

  • Pregnant ladies, lactating mothers and children should take this medicine strictly under medical supervision.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children.
  • Store in a dry cool place.
