Gulvanpsa Ark
Introduction
Gulvanpsa Ark is a classical Ayurvedic distillate prepared from the flowers of Gulvanpsa, which is traditionally identified with Banafsha (Viola odorata), commonly known in English as Sweet Violet. This herb is highly valued in Unani and Ayurvedic traditions for its soothing, expectorant, and respiratory-supportive actions. The Ark preparation is a distilled herbal water that contains the subtle volatile constituents of the flowers. It is particularly beneficial in respiratory tract disorders and chronic low-grade fevers associated with Kapha dosha and Vata dosha imbalance. Due to its mild and balanced potency, it is suitable even for delicate individuals and those with sensitive constitutions. Gulvanpsa Ark is widely used in conditions like Pratishyaya (chronic rhinitis), Shushka Kasa (dry cough), Jeerna Jwara (chronic fever), and Shwasa Roga (respiratory disorders). Its gentle nature makes it a safe option for prolonged use.
Ingredients
- Gulvanpsa (Banafsha / Sweet Violet) (Viola odorata) – 2.5 seer (~2.3 kg) (White-flowered or blue-flowered variety)
- Water – 20 seer (~18.5–19 liters)
Method of Preparation
The flowers of Gulvanpsa are taken and soaked in water during the evening. This soaking process helps to soften the plant material and initiate extraction of active principles. The next morning, the soaked mixture is transferred into a Nadika Yantra (Bhapka / distillation apparatus). The mixture is then subjected to controlled heating. Through proper distillation, approximately 20 tola (~230–240 ml) of Ark is collected as the final distillate. The collected Ark is filtered and stored in clean containers for medicinal use.
Dosage
- 2 to 5 tola (~24 ml to 60 ml)
- Administered morning and evening
- Can be given 3–4 times daily if required
