Jambheeri Draav
Introduction
Jambheeri Draav is a classical Ayurvedic liquid preparation formulated primarily for disorders of digestion, abdominal discomfort, liver-spleen dysfunction, and intestinal stagnation. It is prepared using the juice of Jambheeri Nimbu (Citrus jambhiri / Rough Lemon), a strongly sour citrus fruit traditionally valued for its digestive-stimulating properties. This formulation is considered a mild yet highly effective Deepan-Pachan medicine, meaning it enhances digestive fire and promotes proper metabolic processing. It is especially useful in conditions arising from reduced gastric secretion, chronic indigestion, abdominal bloating, colic pain, constipation, and sluggish liver activity. The classical description also highlights its benefit in Yakrit Vriddhi (liver enlargement), Pleeha Vriddhi (splenic enlargement), and Vataja or Kaphaja Gulma, abdominal masses or gaseous swellings caused by disturbed doshas. Unlike harsh mineral acids or highly potent formulations, Jambheeri Draav is described as saumya (gentle), making it suitable for repeated administration over longer durations when needed.
Ingredients
- Jambheeri Lemon Juice (Citrus jambhiri / Rough Lemon) – 2½ seer (~2.3–2.4 liters)
- Roasted Hing (Asafoetida / Ferula asafoetida) – 2 tola (~23 g)
- Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Sonth (Dry Ginger / Zingiber officinale) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Pippali (Long Pepper / Piper longum) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Marich (Black Pepper / Piper nigrum) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Baibidang / Vidanga (Embelia ribes) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Laung (Clove / Syzygium aromaticum) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Shora (Saltpetre / Potassium Nitrate) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Chhoti Harad (Chebulic Myrobalan / Terminalia chebula) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Sendha Namak (Rock Salt) – 25 tola (~292 g)
- Rai (Mustard / Brassica juncea) – 10 tola (~117 g)
Method Of Preparation
All the dry ingredients are coarsely pounded. These are then immersed in the measured quantity of fresh Jambheeri lemon juice. The mixture is stored in a suitable closed vessel for one month, allowing the herbal and mineral constituents to infuse into the acidic medium. During this maturation period, the liquid develops enhanced digestive potency.
After one month, the mixture is filtered carefully. The strained liquid is preserved in glass bottles and used as medicinal Jambheeri Draav.
Dosage
- 1½ to 2½ tola (~18–30 ml)
- Mixed with water
- Administered twice daily
- Taken 1½ to 2 hours after meals
If Abdominal Pain is severe:
- Add Shankha Bhasma (Conch Shell Calx) – 1 masha (~1 g) with each dose.
