Shankhdraav
Introduction
Shankhdraav is a powerful classical Ayurvedic liquid preparation known for its deep digestive, metabolic, and dissolving properties. It is traditionally used in disorders related to impaired digestion, abdominal masses, liver dysfunction, urinary obstruction, and stone formation. The formulation is acidic in nature and is prepared through a specialized fermentation-distillation process using salts, alkaline minerals, and citrus medium. This medicine is particularly valued for its role in Gulma (abdominal lump or gaseous swelling), Shool (colic pain), Udar Roga (abdominal disorders), Ashmari (urinary calculi / stones), Mutrakrichha (painful urination), Agnimandya (poor digestive fire), and Grahani (malabsorption syndrome / chronic digestive weakness). Shankhdraav is considered both Deepan-Pachan (digestive stimulant and metabolic corrector) and Ashmari Nashak (stone-breaking). Due to its intense potency, it must always be used in carefully diluted doses.
Ingredients
- Saindhava Namak (Rock Salt / Halite) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Kala Namak (Black Salt) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Vida Namak (Ammoniated Salt) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Samudra Namak (Sea Salt) – 5 tola (~58 g)
- Sambhar Salt – 18 tola (~210 g)
- Sajji Khar (Sodium Carbonate / Natural Alkali) – 19 tola (~222 g)
- Kalmi Shora (Potassium Nitrate / Saltpetre) – 20 tola (~233 g)
- Fitkari (Alum / Potassium Aluminum Sulfate) – 9 tola (~105 g)
- Nausadar (Ammonium Chloride) – 4.5 tola (~52 g)
- Kasis (Ferrous Sulfate) – 2.5 tola (~29 g)
- Sohaga (Borax / Sodium Borate) – 2.5 tola (~29 g)
- Lemon Juice (Citrus limon) – four times the total quantity
Method Of Preparation
All salts and mineral substances are collected and mixed uniformly. The combined mixture is then triturated with four times its quantity of fresh lemon juice until properly integrated.
This mixture is transferred into an acid-resistant earthenware or porcelain vessel. It is kept in sunlight for 7 days, and stirred daily with a wooden rod to encourage reaction and maturation.
After seven days, the ark (distilled extract) is obtained using a Varuni Yantra made of clay or porcelain. Metal instruments should never be used, as the acidic nature of the formulation may react adversely.
Dosage
- 10 to 30 drops
- Mixed with 2.5 tola water (~30 ml)
- Administered twice daily after meals
Always dilute before use.
Therapeutic Properties
Shankhdraav is known for:
- Deepan (stimulates appetite and digestion)
- Pachan (improves metabolic transformation)
- Yakrit Balya (supports liver health)
- Udar Shodhak (cleanses abdominal system)
- Krimighna (anti-parasitic)
- Ashmari Nashak (helps dissolve stones)
- Vatanulomana (corrects movement of Vata dosha)
Indications
This formulation is beneficial in:
- Gulma – abdominal masses or gaseous swelling
- Shool – severe abdominal pain
- Agnimandya – low digestive power
- Grahani – chronic indigestion / IBS-like symptoms
- Mutrakrichha – painful urination
- Ashmari – kidney/bladder stones
- Yakrit Vikara – liver congestion
- Pleeha enlargement
- Atisara due to poor absorption
- Intestinal parasites
- Kamala (jaundice) in selected non-inflammatory cases
Clinical Relevance
When gastric secretions are weak or insufficient, Shankhdraav acts as a stimulant to restore digestive balance. In foul-smelling vomiting, sour belching, and abdominal discomfort after heavy or spoiled food intake, repeated diluted administration every 2 hours may provide rapid relief.
In early-stage Vataja Gulma, it strengthens digestion and prevents recurrent gaseous mass formation. In Kaphaja Gulma, it assists in reducing soft fatty-like abdominal lumps.
For liver congestion caused by alcohol excess, overuse of blood-building medicines, or toxic factors, regular use supports metabolic correction.
Role In Urinary Stones
Shankhdraav is traditionally used in Vataja Ashmari, especially hard oxalate-based stones. It may help reduce gravel formation, relieve renal colic, and support passage of urinary deposits.
It is also useful where bladder stones or sandy deposits obstruct urinary flow.
Precautions
- Avoid in high gastric acidity or burning chest sensation
- Not suitable for small children
- Do not use undiluted—may damage teeth and mucosa
- Avoid with calcium-rich medicines like Praval or Mukta preparations in stone cases
- Tobacco use should be stopped in urinary stone patients
Conclusion
Shankhdraav is one of Ayurveda’s most potent acid-based liquid formulations, offering significant benefits in digestive, hepatic, abdominal, and urinary disorders. Its ability to stimulate digestion, dissolve pathological deposits, and correct metabolic disturbances makes it a valuable therapeutic preparation. However, due to its strong acidic character, it should be used carefully, in proper dilution, and under knowledgeable supervision.
