Jvarmurari Ark
Introduction
Jvarmurari Ark is a classical therapeutic liquid preparation designed primarily for the management of various forms of fever, especially Visham Jwar (intermittent fever) and malarial conditions. The name itself signifies a formulation that acts as an “enemy of fever.” It has been traditionally employed in stubborn febrile disorders where cyclical fever patterns, chills, weakness, and relapse are common. This formulation reflects an integrative medicinal approach, combining quinine-based anti-malarial action with stimulatory, circulatory, and supportive ingredients. Historically, it gained importance in treating severe and recurrent fevers such as Ekahika Jwar (quotidian fever), Tritiyaka Jwar (tertian fever), Chaturthika Jwar (quartan fever), Santata Jwar (malarial remittent fever), and even complicated infectious fevers. Its clinical significance lies not only in fever reduction but also in restoring vitality, improving circulation, and preventing recurrence.
Ingredients
- Quinine Sulphate – 2 oz (~56 g)
- Diluted Sulphuric Acid – 4 oz (~118 ml)
- Tincture Nux Vomica (Strychnos nux-vomica) – 1.5 oz (~44 ml)
- Tincture Digitalis (Digitalis purpurea) – 4 oz (~118 ml)
- Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) – 30 minims (~1.8 ml)
- Distilled Water – 20 oz (~591 ml)
Optional: Raspberry coloring may be added at 30 drops per 1 oz for appearance.
Preparation of Diluted Sulphuric Acid
To prepare diluted sulphuric acid safely:
- Add 1 oz (~28 g) concentrated sulphuric acid into 9 oz (~266 ml) water
- Always add acid into water, never water into acid
- Stir carefully and allow to cool before use
This produces the required diluted acid solution.
Method of Preparation
Quinine sulphate is first dissolved in a small quantity of warm distilled water. This is then combined with the diluted sulphuric acid to enhance solubility and stability. Peppermint oil is separately emulsified, after which all ingredients are blended thoroughly.
Finally, distilled water is added to achieve the required volume. The formulation is stored in sterilized bottles and administered in measured doses.
Dosage
- Adults: ½ to 1 dram (~1.8 ml to 3.7 ml)
- Mixed with 1 oz (~30 ml) water
- Frequency: 3 times daily
- Children: reduced dosage according to age and strength
Therapeutic Actions
Jvarmurari Ark acts as:
- Jwaraghna (fever reducing)
- Visham Jwar Nashak (anti-intermittent fever)
- Hridaya Balya (supports cardiac tone)
- Agnideepak (improves digestive fire)
- Srotoshodhak (clears physiological channels)
- Krimighna / Anti-infective support
Indications
Traditionally recommended in:
- Malarial Fever
- Remittent Fever
- Double Quotidian Fever
- Quotidian Fever
- Benign Tertian Fever
- Malignant Tertian Fever
- Quartan Fever
- Relapsing Fever
- Rheumatic Fever
- Influenza
- Puerperal Fever
- Pyaemia
- Tubercular Fever
- Indigestion-related Fever
- Agantuka Jwar (externally caused fevers)
Administration Guidance
For cyclic fevers, medicine should be administered 6 hours before the expected fever cycle, followed by two additional doses every 2 hours. In many cases, this schedule interrupts the fever pattern within a single day.
During fever days:
- Avoid solid food
- Give only milk if weakness is severe
- Resume normal food the following day
- Avoid bathing on the fever day
Special Precautions
Patients with acidic blood tendency may not tolerate quinine well. Such individuals may experience:
- Heat in the head
- Insomnia
- Increased blood pressure
- Reduced kidney efficiency
- Frequent small urination
To reduce these effects, an alkaline corrective such as soda bicarbonate may be given 10–20 minutes before administration.
For Pitta-dominant individuals, milk may be given prior to the Ark.
Clinical Significance
The formulation has historically been used in over one lakh (100,000+) patients, with reports of excellent results even in severe recurrent fevers where temperature fluctuated between 99.5°F and 104°F.
Cases of chronic quartan fever lasting months reportedly improved within 3 to 7 days of proper administration.
Conclusion
Jvarmurari Ark stands as a remarkable fever-management formulation blending classical therapeutic insight with strong anti-malarial and supportive pharmacology. Its role extends beyond simple temperature reduction—it restores strength, breaks cyclical fever patterns, and improves systemic resilience. When used judiciously, it remains a highly valuable preparation for recurrent, infectious, and stubborn fevers.
