Nag Rasayan – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Classical Reference – Ras Tantra Saar And Siddha Prayog Sangreha

Classical Indication – Kasa (Cough)

Introduction

Naga Rasayana—a masterclass in herbo-mineral alchemy designed to reclaim your breath. This formulation acts as an elite respiratory shield, where the fiery synergy of black pepper, clove, and long pepper root ignites a sluggish digestive fire to aggressively dissolve stubborn, white phlegm. Luxury meets raw therapeutic power as rare saffron and musk revitalize a completely exhausted nervous system, restoring the body’s natural enthusiasm to act. At its alchemical core, nanoparticle-sized calcinated lead anchors the remedy, targeting extreme, deep-seated debility. Coated in fresh ginger juice and enhanced with a cool breeze of camphor, this ancient elixir thins dense congestion and widens the airways. It is not just a traditional recipe; it is an elemental catalyst engineered to clear the chest, rebuild shattered energy, and breathe vibrant new life into weary lungs. Let’s discuss!

Ingredients

Take 1 tola (approx. 12g) each of these 6 medicines:

  1. Clove
  2. Nutmeg
  3. Mace
  4. Calcinated Lead (processed 100 times)
  5. Black Pepper
  6. Long Pepper Root
  7. Additionally, take 3 mashe (approximately 3 grams) each of Musk and Saffron

Description of Ingredients

1. Clove

Known as Lavanga, it possesses a pungent and bitter taste with a cold post-digestive effect. It is widely used to balance Kapha and Pitta doshas, soothe toothaches, enhance digestive fire (Agni), and clear respiratory congestion.Scientifically named Syzygium aromaticum, cloves are rich in eugenol, a compound with powerful antiseptic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Research confirms its efficacy in inhibiting oral bacteria and acting as a natural expectorant to relax bronchial passages.

2. Nutmeg

Referred to as Jaiphal, it is hot, light, and pungent. It is highly valued for pacifying Vata and Kapha doshas, treating digestive issues like diarrhea, improving appetite, and acting as a natural sedative to promote sound sleep. Derived from Myristica fragrans, nutmeg contains active compounds like myristicin and elemicin. Modern science recognizes it for its central nervous system-calming effects, potent antimicrobial actions against gut pathogens, and rich antioxidant profile that combats cellular oxidative stress.

3. Mace

Known as Javitri, mace is the web-like outer covering of the nutmeg seed. It shares similar properties but is considered lighter and more aromatic. It is used to boost immunity, improve skin complexion, and relieve asthma, coughs, and throat clearing. Also from Myristica fragrans, mace contains volatile essential oils rich in macelignan and safrole. Scientifically, these compounds demonstrate strong anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antidepressant qualities, while effectively assisting in relieving respiratory inflammation and smoothing bronchial muscles.

4. Calcinated Lead (Processed 100 Times)

Known as Nagabhasma Shataputi, this herbo-mineral formulation undergoes intense purification (Shodhana) and 100 cycles of incineration (Puta). It balances all three doshas and is traditionally indicated for severe wasting diseases, chronic respiratory failure, and diabetes. This is nanoparticle-sized lead oxide processed repeatedly with organic herbal juices, which structurally alters the metal.

5. Black Pepper

Called Maricha, it is highly pungent and hot. It acts as a powerful Kapha and Vata pacifier. Ayurveda uses it to incinerate toxic metabolic waste (Ama), clear respiratory blockages, and dry up excess phlegm from the throat and lungs. Scientifically classified as Piper nigrum, its primary active alkaloid is piperine. Modern science heavily documents piperine as a bio-enhancer that dramatically increases the absorption of other nutrients. It also stimulates pancreatic enzymes and acts as a natural thermogenic and decongestant.

6. Long Pepper Root

Known as Piplamool, this root is hot, penetrating, and absorbent. It specifically pacifies Vata and Kapha doshas. It is a premier choice in Ayurveda for treating chronic indigestion, flatulence, and stubborn respiratory disorders like bronchitis and asthma. The root of Piper longum contains unique alkaloids like piperlongumine and piperine. Scientific studies highlight its remarkable ability to reduce eosinophil counts (allergy markers) in asthma models, enhance gastrointestinal motility, and exert anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) actions on the central nervous system.

7. Musk

Known as Kasturi, it is a highly prized, warm, and piercing aromatic substance. It is classified as a potent rejuvenator (Rasayana) and cardiac stimulant. It quickly pacifies Vata and Kapha, treats neurological disorders, and relieves severe spasms in the respiratory tract. This is historically sourced from the musk deer (and now replicated synthetically as muscone due to conservation laws), musk acts as a powerful central nervous system stimulant. Scientific research verifies its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, making it highly effective in reducing acute bronchial spasms.

8. Saffron

Referred to as Kumkuma or Keshar, it has a pungent, bitter taste and a warm potency. It uniquely balances all three doshas (Tridoshara). It is used to purify the blood, improve skin health, revitalize the nervous system, and alleviate chronic coughs. Derived from Crocus sativus, saffron contains crocin, crocetin, and safranal. Clinical trials confirm these compounds provide massive antioxidant, neuroprotective, and mood-enhancing benefits by regulating serotonin levels, while also working as an effective bronchodilator to ease breathing.

Method of Preparation

  • Mix all the ingredients together and grind them in ginger juice for 6 hours.
  • Then, roll them into small pills weighing half a ratti (approximately 60 milligrams) each. (Source: Yogaratnakara)
  • In this preparation, we also add 6 mashe of Camphor.
  • Adding camphor strengthens the respiratory process, providing greater relief, and causes the phlegm to become thin and loose so it can be expelled easily.

Indications and Clinical Use

This preparation cures diseases such as wasting due to phlegm imbalance, breathing difficulties, cough, body pain, common cold, and chronic rhinitis. It is highly beneficial in situations where a severe cough, breathing difficulty, or pain has arisen from an excess of phlegm, leading to extreme weakness, a severely debilitated body, a total lack of energy or enthusiasm to work, the frequent and painful coughing up of white, sticky phlegm, and a severely slowed-down digestive system.

Dosage

Take 1 to 2 pills, 3 times a day, with ginger juice and honey, or with an appropriate vehicle according to the specific illness.

Conclusion

At last we can say that Naga Rasayana to be a profoundly sophisticated and potent formula that bridges the gap between raw botanical energy and meticulous mineral alchemy. By combining highly stimulating spices like black pepper and long pepper root with the deeply stabilizing properties of purified calcinated lead, it offers a dual-action approach to healing. It simultaneously incinerates heavy, debilitating congestion while restoring the profound physical vitality lost to chronic illness. When paired with modern insights, this ancient preparation stands as a striking testament to traditional medicine’s ability to orchestrate complex, synergistic ingredients to clear the mind, open the airways, and completely revitalize the human body.

When discussing such traditional preparations alongside modern scientific perspectives, it is important to distinguish classical Ayurvedic descriptions from evidence established through contemporary clinical research. Proper identification, preparation, quality control, and professional supervision are particularly important for formulations containing heavy metals.
