Pittantak Loha – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages
REFERENCE – Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Vataraktarogadhikar Chapter 27 Verse 64-67
Abstract
The simultaneous aggravation of Pitta Dosha (Pitta Dushti) and vitiation of blood tissue (Rakta Dhatu Dushti) lead to several conditions such as Anemia (Pandu), Liver disorders (Yakrit Vikara), Inflammation (Shotha), and Burning sensations (Daha). These pathological states cause excessive body heat, fatigue, weakness, and impaired blood formation. According to Ayurveda, such disorders are managed through Pitta-pacifying (Pitta-shamaka), blood-purifying (Raktashodhaka), and rejuvenating (Rasayana) therapies. Pittantak Loha, a classical herbo-mineral formulation (Rasaushadhi), is renowned for its Pitta-alleviating (Pitta-nashaka), Vatarakta-relieving (Vataraktahara), and liver-strengthening (Yakrituttejak) properties. It detoxifies the blood, improves hepatic metabolism, reduces inflammation, and alleviates burning sensations and fatigue. This formulation provides remarkable results in Anemia (Pandu), Liver diseases (Yakrit Roga), Gout and allied disorders (Vatarakta), and other Pitta-dominant disorders (Pittaj Vyadhi), thereby promoting blood purification (Rakta Prasadan), tissue nourishment (Dhatu Pushti), and systemic rejuvenation (Sarva Sharirik Rasayana). Let’s explore it in detail!
Introduction
Pittantak Loha is a classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation (Rasaushadhi) specifically designed for the management of Pitta and blood-related disorders (Pittaj evam Raktaj Vyadhi). The name itself reflects its therapeutic intent — “Pitta” signifies the aggravated Pitta Dosha (Pitta Dushti) responsible for excessive body heat, inflammation, and burning sensations, while “Antak” means the destroyer (Nashaka), indicating its potent action in eliminating Pitta-related derangements from the system. The term “Loha” denotes Iron (Lauha), symbolizing its vital role in improving blood quality, correcting anemia, and enhancing metabolism. This formulation harmonizes the deranged Pitta and Rakta Doshas (Pitta-Blood), purifies the blood (Raktashodhana), strengthens liver function (Yakrituttejana), and alleviates symptoms like burning sensation (Daha), inflammation (Shotha), fatigue (Daurbalya), and weakness (Kshaya).

Description Of Ingredients
1. Shuddha Parad (Purified Mercury)
It is the essence of Rasashastra and acts as a potent Rasayana (rejuvenator) and Yogavahi (catalyst) that amplifies the efficacy of all accompanying ingredients. Shuddha Parad enhances digestion (Agni Deepana), supports detoxification (Ama Pachana), and balances both Vata and Pitta Doshas. In Vatarakta (Gout and allied disorders), it rejuvenates blood and muscle tissues, promotes toxin elimination, and revitalizes cellular metabolism, thereby restoring systemic equilibrium.
2. Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulphur)
It possesses powerful Rakta Shodhak (blood-purifying), Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), and Vata-Kapha Nashak (dosha-pacifying) properties. Shuddha Gandhak improves skin and blood metabolism, removes accumulated toxins (Ama), and enhances peripheral circulation. Owing to its Ushna Veerya (hot potency) and Kushtaghna (anti-dermatitic) nature, it helps dissolve uric acid deposits, relieves redness, stiffness, and pain in Vatarakta (Gout and allied disorders), and supports the purification of blood and liver channels.
3. Abhrak Bhasma (Calcined Mica Ash)
It is a potent Rasayana (rejuvenator) and Balya (strength-promoting) mineral known for its adaptogenic and anti-inflammatory actions. Rich in trace elements, Abhrak Bhasma supports hemopoiesis, enhances cellular repair, and strengthens Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue). In Pandu (Anemia) and Yakrit Vikara (Liver disorders), it revitalizes the liver, promotes red blood cell formation, and improves oxygenation. It balances Pitta, nourishes tissues, and restores vitality in chronic Pitta and Rakta vitiation.
4. Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)
Vanga Bhasma holds a highly specialized status in treating the Mutravaha (urinary) and Shukravaha (reproductive) channels. It directly targets the genitourinary mucosa, reducing inflammation, toning the bladder walls, and regularizing urinary output. Furthermore, it possesses profound Vrishya (aphrodisiac) actions, directly improving sperm count, morphology, and preventing involuntary seminal leakage.
5. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)
It is known as the “Mother of Herbs,” Haritaki exhibits Vata-Kapha Shamak (dosha balancing) and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. It enhances digestion (Agnideepana), supports bowel cleansing (Anulomana), and assists in toxin elimination. In Pandu (anemia) and Vatarakta (Gout and allied disorders), it purifies the blood, reduces inflammation, and regulates metabolism by promoting proper nutrient absorption. Its Deepana-Pachana (appetizer-digestive) effect aids in maintaining digestive health and supports optimal liver function.
6. Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides)
It is a cooling and Pitta-pacifying (Pittashamaka) herb known for its Dahaprashamana (anti-burning) and Raktashodhaka (blood-purifying) qualities. Ushira reduces internal heat, soothes inflammation, and alleviates burning sensations in Pitta and Rakta Dushti conditions. In Vatarakta and Yakrit Roga, it provides a cooling effect, relieves swelling, and maintains equilibrium of Pitta Dosha, supporting overall detoxification and systemic calmness.
7. Sugandh Bala (Pavonia odorata)
It possesses Pittashamaka (Pitta-pacifying), Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), and Hridaya Balya (cardiac tonic) actions. Its aromatic and cooling nature helps alleviate burning sensations (Daha), promotes relaxation, and strengthens circulation. In Pittaj Vyadhi and Vatarakta (Gout and allied disorders), it reduces inflammation, calms irritated tissues, and supports liver and blood purification. Its soothing aroma contributes to stress reduction and enhances overall metabolic harmony.
8. Tamra Bhasma (Calcined Copper Ash)
It acts as a potent Yakrituttejak (liver stimulant), Raktashodhaka (blood purifier), and Medohara (fat-metabolizing) agent. Tamra Bhasma promotes bile secretion, improves liver function, and assists in fat metabolism. In Gout, Pandu (anemia) and Yakrit Roga (liver disorders), it detoxifies the blood and corrects metabolic sluggishness. It enhances absorption of iron and other minerals, making it highly beneficial in Anemia, Gout and Pitta-dominant disorders.
9. Lauha Bhasma (Calcined Iron Ash)
It is a classical Raktavardhak (hematinic) and Pandu-nashaka (anti-anemic) mineral. Lauha Bhasma enhances hemoglobin synthesis, rejuvenates blood tissue, and strengthens liver metabolism. In Pittaj Vyadhi (Pitta disorders) and Vatarakta (Gout and allied disorders), it replenishes deficient Rakta Dhatu, corrects bile imbalance, and supports oxygenation of tissues. Its Rasayana (rejuvenating) nature promotes endurance, vitality, and systemic rejuvenation, making it the prime base of Pittantak Loha.
10. Guduchi Swaras (Juice of Tinospora cordifolia) – Bhavana Dravya (Trituration Medium)
It is used as a Bhavana (trituration liquid), Guduchi Swaras enhances the potency and assimilation of all ingredients. It detoxifies Pitta and Rakta Dhatu, strengthens liver function, and supports rejuvenation. The repeated trituration with Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) juice imbues the formulation with cooling, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory qualities, making Pittantak Loha highly effective in chronic Pitta, Rakta, and hepatic disorders.
