Shirisharishta – Properties, Varieties, Composition & Dosages
Introduction
Shirisharishta is a classical Ayurvedic fermented tonic specifically designed to combat the effects of toxins and poisons in the body. Its primary ingredient, Shirish (Albizia lebbeck), along with a carefully selected combination of herbs, works synergistically to neutralize harmful substances, support liver function, and reduce inflammation caused by toxic exposure. The unique fermentation process enhances the extraction and potency of these herbs, making the tonic gentle, effective, and easily assimilable. Traditionally, Shirisharishta has been valued for managing complications arising from poisons, allergic reactions, skin disorders, and respiratory disturbances, offering a natural, holistic approach to detoxification and restoration of balance in the body.

Description Of Ingredients
Shirish (Albizia lebbeck)
It is called the “Woman’s Tongue Tree” in English because its rattling seed pods produce a sound resembling continuous talking. It is Madhura (Sweet), Tikta (Bitter), and Kashaya (Astringent) in taste, Ishat Ushna (Slightly Hot) in potency, and balances all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). In Ayurveda, it is regarded as the Agrya Dravya (best herb) for managing Visha (poison). It contains active constituents such as tannins, saponins, and alkaloids that help neutralize toxic substances while reducing toxin-induced inflammation.
Kwatharth Jal (Water for Decoction)
Water is naturally Madhura (Sweet) in taste and Sheeta (Cold) in potency. It serves as the universal solvent in Arishta Kalpana (Ayurvedic fermented formulations), extracting active constituents from herbs during decoction due to its soft, fluid, and unctuous qualities. It also balances the heating effect of the naturally generated alcohol during fermentation, making the final formulation gentle, stable, and easily digestible.
Gud (Jaggery)
Gud is Madhura (Sweet) in taste and, despite its sweetness, does not aggravate Kapha dosha. It is superior to refined sugar because it contains trace minerals and micronutrients that naturally accelerate fermentation. Its sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) are converted by naturally occurring yeast into self-generated alcohol, which acts as a preservative and enhances the extraction and absorption of herbal constituents.
Krishna / Pippali (Piper longum)
Commonly known as Long Pepper, it is Katu (Pungent) in taste, Anushnasheeta (Neither Hot nor Cold) in potency, and balances Vata and Pitta doshas. Its major phytoconstituents include piperine, piplasterol, and piplartine. It enhances the bioavailability of other herbs, suppresses inflammatory cytokines responsible for allergic reactions, and, due to its Katu Rasa and Madhura Vipaka, helps cleanse the Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue).
Priyangu (Callicarpa macrophylla)
Known as Beautyberry, it is Madhura (Sweet), Tikta (Bitter), and Kashaya (Astringent) in taste, Sheeta (Cold) in potency, and balances Vata and Pitta doshas. Considered Vishaghna (poison-neutralizing) in Ayurveda, it contains calliterpenone, β-sitosterol, and crategolic acid. These compounds provide antioxidant and cytoprotective effects that reduce toxin-induced tissue damage, airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and improve airflow.
Kushtha (Saussurea lappa)
Known as Costus, Kushtha is Madhura (Sweet), Katu (Pungent), and Tikta (Bitter) in taste, Ushna (Hot) in potency, and balances Vata and Kapha doshas. Ayurveda describes it as Kaphanisraka, Shwasahara, and Kushthaghna. It contains saussurine, costunolide, and sitosterol, which possess anti-inflammatory properties that reduce skin redness, swelling, and irritation while protecting against oxidative damage. It also supports immune balance and improves respiratory function.
Ela (Elettaria cardamomum)
Ela is Madhura (Sweet) and Katu (Pungent) in taste, Sheeta (Cold) in potency, and balances all three doshas. Major constituents such as limonene, menthone, and sitosterol stimulate digestion, reduce nausea, protect the gastric mucosa, and minimize toxin-related side effects. Its bronchodilator and expectorant properties support healthy respiratory function.
Neelini (Indigofera tinctoria)
Popularly known as Indigo, Neelini is Tikta (Bitter) in taste, Ushna (Hot) in potency, and balances Vata and Kapha doshas. Ayurveda recommends it for managing Jaangama Visha (toxins originating from living organisms). Active compounds such as indigotin and indican exhibit antimicrobial properties by disrupting microbial metabolism and reducing toxin production.
Nagkesar (Mesua ferrea)
Nagkesar is Tikta (Bitter) and Kashaya (Astringent) in taste, Ishat Ushna (Slightly Hot) in potency, and balances Pitta and Kapha doshas. It contains mesuone and mesuol, which support liver detoxification by enhancing detoxifying enzymes, reducing inflammatory cytokines, and protecting cells from toxin-induced damage.
Haridra (Curcuma longa)
Commonly known as Turmeric, Haridra is Katu (Pungent) and Tikta (Bitter) in taste, Ushna (Hot) in potency, and balances all three doshas. Active constituents such as curcumenone, β-sitosterol, and cineole contribute to its Vishaghna (poison-neutralizing) and Kushthaghna (skin-supporting) properties. It purifies the blood, supports liver function, and assists in detoxification.
Daruharidra (Berberis aristata)
Daruharidra is Tikta (Bitter) and Kashaya (Astringent) in taste, Ushna (Hot) in potency, and balances Pitta and Kapha doshas. Its major constituent, berberine, possesses potent antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, and blood-purifying activities that protect the skin from infections, free radicals, and premature ageing.
Nagar / Shunthi (Zingiber officinale)
Known as Ginger, Shunthi is Katu (Pungent) in taste, Ushna (Hot) in potency, and balances Vata and Kapha doshas. It contains zingiberol and zingerone, which inhibit inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, reduce airway irritation, decrease cough, improve mucus clearance, and help prevent recurrent respiratory infections.
Method Of Preparation
All the herbs are dried and cleaned properly. Shirish (Albizia lebbeck) is processed into a coarse powder and it is added to the water for decoction (24.576 litres). It is boiled to the volume of 6.144 litres and it is then left to cool on its own. Later, it is filtered out and coarse powder of rest of the herbs along with Gud (Jaggery) are added to the obtained liquid. All the contents are stirred well to make sure they are thoroughly mixed. This homogenous mixture is then kept in clean earthen pots and they are kept in a dark room. They are left undisturbed for a period of one month for fermentation. After this, it is filtered and stored in clean glass bottles.
