Shwasakasachintamani Ras – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Abstract

In the realm of Ayurvedic pathology, Shwasa (dyspnea/asthma) and Hikka (hiccups) are twin storms born from a deeply disturbed Prana Vayu. Caused by a sudden obstruction of the respiratory channels by heavy, stagnant Kapha, the upward-moving breath becomes violently chaotic, triggering acute respiratory spasms, chest tightness, and a collapsing digestive fire (Agni). To pacify this life-threatening turmoil, Shwasakasachintamani Ras stands out as the ultimate alchemical solution. Formulated with profound rejuvenators like Swarna Bhasma, Abhrak Bhasma, and Mukta Pishti, it penetrates deep into cellular pathways to repair weak lungs, relax the diaphragm, and strengthen a failing cardiac system. By restoring the natural downward flow of Prana, it safely unravels the root causes of both Shwasa and Hikka.

Ingredients

  1. 1-1 Tola each: Purified Mercury (Shuddha Parad), Suvarnamakshik Bhasma and Swarna Bhasma (Gold calx)
  2. 6 Mashe: Mukta Pishti
  3. 4 Tolas: Loha Bhasma (Iron calx)
  4. 2-2 Tolas each: Purified Sulfur (Shuddha Gandhak) and Abhrak Bhasma (Mica calx)

Description of Ingredients

1. Purified Mercury (Shuddha Parad)

Shuddha Parad is considered the foundational alchemical pillar of Rasa Shastra. When purified through advanced Shodhana (detoxification) processes, it transforms into a supreme Rasayana (rejuvenator) that balances all three Doshas. It possesses an unmatchable Yogavahi property, acting as a rapid catalytic vehicle that amplifies the therapeutic efficacy of co-ingredients and carries them deep into microscopic cellular channels (Srotas). Chemically, elemental mercury is a highly toxic liquid heavy metal. However, traditional processing converts it into stable, bio-compatible chemical complexes (such as mercuric sulfide). Modern nanomaterial pharmacology reveals that these processed micro-particles act as highly efficient drug-delivery vehicles, crossing cellular membranes seamlessly to modulate deep tissue target receptors without causing heavy-metal bio-accumulation or toxic cell damage.

2. Suvarnamakshik Bhasma (Chalcopyrite Calx)

Suvarnamakshik Bhasma is prepared from purified copper-iron pyrites. It has a sweet and bitter taste, a cold potency (Sheeta Virya), and specifically pacifies Pitta and Kapha Doshas. It is traditionally celebrated as a premier Raktaproshtik (hemodatinic/blood-enriching) and Pramehahara tonic, widely indicated for correcting systemic bleeding disorders, severe anemia (Pandu), chronic low-grade fevers, and localized structural tissue weakness. Biomedically, this calx represents a complex, nano-crystalline formulation rich in bioavailable iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and sulfur (S). Modern hematological research demonstrates that it significantly enhances hemoglobin synthesis, boosts red blood cell production, and acts as a potent cellular antioxidant. The unique presence of micro-copper acts as a natural cofactor, vastly optimizing iron absorption within the gastrointestinal tract.

3. Swarna Bhasma (Gold Calx)

This nano-processed gold calx is Ayurveda’s ultimate Rasayana (rejuvenator) and Vajikarana (aphrodisiac tonic). It is sweet, cooling, and universally balances all three Doshas. It directly nourishes Ojas (vital life force), sharpens intellect, protects the cardiac muscles, and acts as an unmatched restorative tonic during advanced or chronic degenerative disorders. Swarna Bhasma consists of globular, non-toxic gold nanoparticles (Au). Modern nanotechnology and immunopharmacology confirm that these bio-compatible nanoparticles function as potent immunomodulators and free-radical scavengers. They easily pass through the blood-brain barrier, stimulate cellular repair mechanisms, enhance phagocytic activity, and drastically down-regulate chronic systemic inflammatory cytokines that damage vital organ systems.

4. Mukta Pishti (Processed Pearl Powder)

Prepared by triturating pure pearls with rose water, Mukta Pishti is exceptionally cooling (Sheeta), sweet, and light. It is the premier remedy to pacify highly aggravated Pitta Dosha. It acts as a profound Hridya (cardiac tonic), calms psychotropic distress, neutralizes burning sensations (Daha), stabilizes erratic blood circulation, and nourishes the deep plasma tissue. Chemically composed of pure natural calcium carbonate (CaCO3) integrated with essential amino acids and trace bio-minerals. Modern clinical medicine values it as an ultra-absorbable, highly bioavailable form of elemental calcium. It safely regulates neuromuscular excitability, strengthens myocardial contractions, exerts natural antacid/gastroprotective actions, and stabilizes nervous system pathways to mitigate anxiety-induced hyperventilation or cardiac asthma.

5. Loha Bhasma (Iron Calx)

Loha Bhasma is a highly refined iron calx that is bitter, astringent, and cooling. It balances Kapha and Pitta while intensely rebuilding the Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue). It directly eradicates generalized debility, counters digestive sluggishness (Agni Manda), manages spleen enlargement, and stands as a primary structural compound to revive weak lungs. This calcined material comprises advanced nano-sized iron oxides (principally magnetite, Fe3O4). Modern nutritional science confirms it treats iron-deficiency anemia with zero gastrointestinal irritation or side effects common with synthetic iron salts. It serves as a core functional block for cellular respiration, fueling oxygen transport across hemoglobin and myoglobin networks to reverse chronic cellular hypoxia.

6. Purified Sulfur (Shuddha Gandhak)

Once purified meticulously in milk or ghee to neutralize impurities, Shuddha Gandhak exhibits a pungent taste and a hot potency. It is an essential alchemical partner used to bind mercury into a non-reactive, safe compound (Kajjali). It acts as a deep blood purifier, a digestive stimulant (Deepana), and a potent antimicrobial agent (Krimighna). Elemental sulfur is an essential macronutrient necessary for synthesizing vital sulfur-containing amino acids (like methionine and cysteine). Modern pharmacology values purified sulfur for its distinct keratolytic, antifungal, and broad-spectrum antibacterial mechanisms. It plays a pivotal role in cellular detoxification, curbs mucosal inflammation, and stabilizes heavy metals into completely inert, bioavailable mineral complexes.

7. Abhrak Bhasma (Mica Calx)

Subjected to multiple cycles of intensive alchemical calcination, Abhrak Bhasma acts as a supreme tissue-builder. It holds a specific, powerful affinity for the Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory network). It repairs structural lung damage, expels deep-seated, chronic phlegm, subdues low-grade fevers, and balances all three Doshas simultaneously. Chemically structured as calcined biotite mica rich in bio-available silicate minerals along with trace magnesium, iron, and potassium. Biomedical studies show it serves as a powerful cellular adaptogen and pulmonary protective agent. It safely boosts mitochondrial energy production, enhances alveolar gas exchange, and actively suppresses fibrotic or chronic inflammatory changes in pulmonary tissue.

Method of Preparation

  • First, combine the purified Mercury and Sulfur to prepare Kajjali.
  • Next, add the remaining Bhasmas and Pishti to it. Triturate (Kharal) the mixture thoroughly by giving 7-7 successive levigations (Bhavanas) each with the juice of Kateli (Kantakari), goat’s milk, a decoction of Mulethi (Yashthimadhu Kwath), and the juice of Nagarbel (betel) leaves.
  • Finally, roll the mass into tablets weighing 1-1 Ratti (approx. 125 mg) each.

Indications

Shwasakasachintamani Ras is temperate in potency (Samashitooshna), hemodatinic/rejuvenating (Raktaproshtik), a strengthener of the lungs (Fuffusa-Balavardhak), beneficial for the heart (Hridya), and an expectorant (Kaphasravi). This formulation is not used during the acute paroxysm or attack phase; rather, it is administered to suppress spasms after the acute attack has subsided. It is utilized both in primary dyspnea/asthma (Moolbhoot Shwasa) and when respiratory issues appear as symptoms or secondary complications (Upadrava). Generally, in chronic respiratory diseases, the entire pulmonary system becomes weak and the digestive fire diminishes (Agni Manda). Keeping this general condition in mind, the original author has prescribed honey and Pippali as the standard adjuvant. However, to obtain specific therapeutic benefits, the adjuvant should be modified based on the patient’s requirement.

Clinical Use

  • Dyspnea Associated with Cardiac Pathology (Tamak Shwasa / Cardiac Asthma) – When diseases like anemia (Pandurog), chronic intermittent fever (Vishamajwara), or typhoid fever persist in the body for a very long duration, or due to chronic rheumatism (Aamavata), the heart becomes extremely weak. This can cause dilation of a cardiac chamber or other pathological structural modifications. Consequently, blood circulation does not happen properly, and the tissues fail to receive the required purified blood. To compensate, the Cardio-Accelerating Centre is stimulated, forcing the struggling heart to work much harder. When the suffering heart fails to efficiently pump or pull deoxygenated blood, the accumulation of vitiated air (carbon dioxide) increases in the bloodstream, triggering the Respiration Centre in the medulla oblongata. This pathology manifests as Tamak Shwasa (Cardiac Asthma) arising from cardiac disorders. Its clinical presentation includes structural changes in the pulse rate, pressure and tightness in the chest, respiratory obstruction (Shwasavarodha), severe anxiety during inhalation, frothy expectoration, and occasionally symptoms like urinary retention (Mootravarodha). Consuming Shwasakasachintamani Ras along with honey and Pippali provides strength to the heart and gradually suppresses the dyspnea.
  • Dyspnea with Adherent, Sticky Phlegm (चिपके हुए कफ युक्त श्वास) – During inhalation, air enters the respiratory system, expanding the thoracic cavity and causing the pulmonary alveoli to inflate. During exhalation, the alveoli and thoracic cavity contract to expel the air. This cycle of expansion and contraction normally runs rhythmically. However, due to excess bodily heat or the consumption of drying medicines like opium, the Shleshma (mucus) dries up and adheres strongly inside the respiratory tract (bronchioles, lungs, etc.), creating an obstruction to the free passage of air. If this sticky phlegm is not expelled rapidly, the alveoli and bronchial passages become distressed and flaccid, leading to frequent attacks of severe breathlessness (Dyspnoea) and the onset of Tamak Shwasa (Asthma). For this type of pathology, this Ras should be administered with stimulating and expectorant adjuvants like the juice of Vasapantra (Vasa), Mulethi, Baheda, Bharangi, and rock candy (Mishri), or along with a decoction of Maricha (Black pepper). Alternatively, it can be given with a soothing, expectorant syrup like Zufa Sharbat. If the mucus has completely dried up, using a decoction of black pepper (Marichadi Kwath) is exceptionally beneficial to re-moisten and easily expel it.
  • Dyspnea Rooted in Indigestion – When gastric functions are impaired, conditions like Vidagdha-ajeerna (acidic/sour indigestion) or Vishtabdha-ajeerna (indigestion with flatulence and severe constipation) manifest. When these two forms of indigestion turn chronic, they cause significant structural and functional harm to both the heart and lungs, eventually inducing dyspnea. In this context, the respiratory distress is considered an Upadrava (secondary complication) of the digestive disorder. To resolve this condition, the root cause—indigestion—must be treated; managing the respiratory symptoms alone will not suppress the disease.
  • For dyspnea caused by Vishtabdha-ajeerna, Shwasakasachintamani Ras should be given with ginger juice and honey.
  • If the underlying cause is Vidagdha-ajeerna—characterized by burning sensations (Daha), sour eructations, absence of thick phlegm, rapid breathing, and extreme anxiety—this Ras should be administered alongside Praval Pishti and Sitopaladi Churna, mixed with honey, to successfully suppress the respiratory distress.
  • Dyspnea in Chronic Smokers – The chests of habitual smokers are consistently laden with dark, congested phlegm, and over time, lesions or tissue damage can develop in their lungs. Similar to tuberculosis patients, they frequently cough up a foul-smelling, purulent mucus, sometimes expelling as much as 20 to 40 Tolas of phlegm daily. For such patients, administering Shwasakasachintamani along with Shringa Bhasma and Lohaban Pushpa (Benzoic acid) successfully reduces internal heat and normalizes the respiratory system.
  • Dyspnea in Old Age – Senile debility arising from advanced age, excessive sexual indulgence, severe mental anxiety, or prolonged fasting leads to natural tissue wasting and frailty. In this state, even minimal physical exertion triggers sudden breathlessness (Shortness of Breath). This senile dyspnea can be managed by administering smaller doses of Shwasakasachintamani Ras along with honey and Pippali. Within a few days, the body regains vital strength and the respiratory distress subsides completely.
  • Hereditary Asthma – Hereditary dyspnea (Bronchial Asthma) runs across generations in certain families. In this condition, an absence of external triggers can still induce inflammation and hypersensitivity within the bronchioles or alveoli. The primary underlying pathology here is a natural, structural weakness of the respiratory system itself. When this manifests in young children or early age, their tissue elasticity is typically higher; hence, administering long-term, low-dose therapy of Shwasakasachintamani Ras along with Sitopaladi Churna and honey yields highly favorable results.
  • Important Note for Management: If an asthmatic patient suffers from severe constipation (Malavarodha), it must be cleared immediately. If there is an active spasm in the respiratory channels, immediate anti-spasmodic treatment should be initiated.
  • Kapha-Dominant Cough (कफप्रधान कास) – Cough disorders generally originate from chronic rhinitis (Pratishyaya), microbial toxins, or fever caused by seasonal or toxic influences. These manifest in two clinical forms: acute and chronic. In the acute phase, the cough presents with a rapid onset, high velocity, and a lack of thick mucus expectoration, or it presents with highly frothy, fluid-like sputum. Shwasakasachintamani Ras does not provide significant benefits during this hyper-acute phase.
  • However, when the cough turns chronic, the respiratory membranes become flaccid, and thick mucus begins to pool heavily within the lungs. This chronic state leaves the heart weak and the respiratory tissues highly delicate. For individuals with this specific presentation, administering Shwasakasachintamani instead of harsher alternatives like Kaphakuthar Ras is considered an exceptionally superior and safer clinical choice.
  • Hiccup Management – Hiccups arise from diverse etiologies, but almost all are precipitated by an acute spasm of the diaphragm muscle (Mahaprachira Peshi). If this spasm is triggered by irritation of the gastric mucosa, gastric line, or localized intestinal inflammation, it manifests as severe, persistent hiccups (Yamala Hikka). To manage this specific presentation, Shwasakasachintamani Ras should be administered combined with jaggery, or alongside a warm infusion (Phant) of dry ginger (Sonth).

Dosage

1-1 tablet, 2 or 3 times a day, administered with an adjuvant (Anupana) of honey and Pippali, or as per the specific disease.

Expert Commentary & Editorial Notes

The author of Bhaishajya Ratnavali named this formulation Shwasachintamani Ras and prescribed half the quantity of Gold calx (Swarna Bhasma) while using ginger juice instead of betel leaf juice for processing. In Bengal and other highly humid geographical regions, practitioners prefer using ginger juice. In those territories, several physicians have substituted the liquid medium with Ras Sindoor and ginger juice to manage conditions with high intensity. However, formulations containing Ras Sindoor combined with ginger juice exhibit a very sharp, intense action that may not be easily tolerated by individuals with a Pitta-dominant constitution (Pitta Pradhan Prakriti). Therefore, depending on individual tolerance and constitutional requirements, it must be administered in lower doses alongside cooling, soothing adjuvants (Sheetal Anupana).

Conclusion

At last we can say that Shwasakasachintamani Ras represents a pinnacle of alchemical engineering, providing a comprehensive antidote to the chaotic dynamics of Shwasa and Hikka. By anchoring intense, mineral-rich calces like Swarna and Loha Bhasma within a cooling bed of Mukta Pishti, this formulation brilliantly balances cardiac strength with respiratory dilation. It avoids mere symptomatic suppression; instead, it targets the underlying pathology by scraping away stubborn phlegm, soothing diaphragmatic spasms, and rekindling the vital digestive fire. When strategically administered, this Ras serves as a profound restorative shield—healing damaged pulmonary linings, stabilizing Prana, and completely reclaiming respiratory equilibrium.
