Ushiradi Kashaya – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Introduction

Ushiradi Kashaya is a classical Ayurvedic polyherbal decoction indicated primarily in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, particularly diarrhoea associated with bleeding, mucus, abdominal pain, impaired digestion, and fever. The formulation combines herbs that possess Deepana (enhancing digestive fire), Pachana (digesting Ama or metabolic toxins), Grahi (absorbent), Stambhana (haemostatic), Pitta-pacifying, and cooling properties. Through this combination, Ushiradi Kashaya not only arrests excessive bowel movements but also addresses the underlying disturbance in Agni (digestive fire) responsible for disease progression. The formulation is especially useful in conditions where Atisara (diarrhoea) is accompanied by Shonita (blood), Piccha (mucus), abdominal colic, poor appetite, and Ama (metabolic toxins). Unlike formulations that merely suppress diarrhoea, Ushiradi Kashaya restores normal digestive function while simultaneously controlling inflammation and intestinal irritation. The inclusion of cooling herbs such as Ushira (Vetiver) and Balaka (Pavonia odorata), along with Grahi herbs such as Bilva (Aegle marmelos) and Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), makes it particularly suitable in Pitta-predominant intestinal disorders.

Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides), Balaka (Pavonia odorata), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum), Sunthi (Zingiber officinale), Lajjalu (Mimosa pudica), Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa), Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), and Bilva (Aegle marmelos) collectively possess Deepana and Pachana properties that improve digestion and metabolize Ama. The formulation effectively relieves loss of appetite (Arochaka), mucus in stools (Picchama), constipation (Vibandha), severe abdominal pain, and diarrhoea associated with bleeding. It is beneficial in Atisara occurring both with and without fever, particularly when Vata is involved.

Commentary

The formulation is described in Chakradatta (Jvaratisara Chikitsa 2:8–9) and is also mentioned in Bhaishajya Ratnavali (Jvaratisara Chikitsa 6:10–11) with similar indications. It is regarded as an effective classical preparation for managing Atisara complicated by impaired digestion, intestinal inflammation, bleeding, and excessive mucus discharge.

Ingredients

The ingredients of Ushiradi Kashaya are:

  1. Ushira (Vetiver) (Vetiveria zizanioides) – 1 part
  2. Balaka (Sugandha Bala) (Pavonia odorata) – 1 part
  3. Musta (Nut Grass) (Cyperus rotundus) – 1 part
  4. Dhanyaka (Coriander) (Coriandrum sativum) – 1 part
  5. Sunthi (Dry Ginger) (Zingiber officinale) – 1 part
  6. Lajjalu (Sensitive Plant) (Mimosa pudica) – 1 part
  7. Dhataki (Fire Flame Bush) (Woodfordia fruticosa) – 1 part
  8. Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) – 1 part
  9. Bilva (Bael) (Aegle marmelos) – 1 part
  10. Water – 16 parts

Method of Preparation

Take all the herbs in equal quantities and prepare a coarse powder. Add sixteen times water to the combined coarse powder and boil over mild heat until the liquid is reduced to one-eighth of its original volume. For example, if 480 ml of water is used, it should be reduced to approximately 60 ml. The prepared decoction should then be filtered through a clean cloth while warm. Freshly prepared Kashaya is preferred for therapeutic use, as it retains maximum potency and therapeutic efficacy.

Dose

The recommended dose is 40 ml, twice daily, preferably before food or as directed by an Ayurvedic physician.

Ayurvedic Properties of Ingredients

1. Ushira (Vetiver) (Vetiveria zizanioides) – Vetiver

Ushira is renowned for its cooling, Pitta-pacifying, and hemostatic properties. It possesses Tikta (bitter) and Madhura (sweet) Rasa, Laghu (light) and Ruksha (dry) Guna, Sheeta Veerya (cold potency), and Madhura Vipaka (sweet post-digestive effect). It alleviates Pitta and Rakta (blood) vitiation while relieving burning sensation, excessive thirst, and bleeding disorders. In Ushiradi Kashaya, Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides) cools the inflamed intestinal mucosa, reduces bleeding, and helps restore normal bowel function.

2. Balaka (Sugandha Bala) (Pavonia odorata) – Fragrant Swamp Mallow

Balaka (Pavonia odorata) possesses cooling, digestive, and aromatic properties. It helps pacify aggravated Pitta, relieves burning sensation, and supports proper digestion without increasing heat in the body. It also contributes to reducing intestinal irritation and complements Ushira (Vetiveria zizanioides) in controlling Pitta-induced inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.

3. Musta (Nut Grass) (Cyperus rotundus)

Musta (Cyperus rotundus) is one of the most important Ayurvedic herbs for digestive disorders. It possesses Tikta (bitter), Katu (pungent), and Kashaya (astringent) Rasa with Laghu (light) and Ruksha (dry) Guna. It exhibits Sheeta Veerya and Katu Vipaka. It improves digestive fire, digests Ama, reduces intestinal inflammation, and helps control diarrhoea by improving intestinal absorption.

4. Dhanyaka (Coriander) (Coriandrum sativum) – Coriander

Dhanyaka (Coriandrum sativum) is a mild digestive and carminative herb that balances both Pitta and Vata dosha. It relieves abdominal discomfort, flatulence, thirst, nausea, and digestive weakness. Its cooling nature makes it particularly suitable for diarrhoea associated with burning sensation and fever while supporting healthy digestion.

5. Shunthi (Dry Ginger) (Zingiber officinale)

Shunthi is regarded as Vishvabhaishaja, the universal medicine, because of its extensive therapeutic applications. It stimulates Agni (digestive fire), digests Ama (metabolic toxins), relieves abdominal colic, reduces intestinal gas, and restores digestive efficiency. In this formulation, it balances the cooling herbs and prevents excessive suppression of digestive fire while improving the absorption of nutrients.

6. Lajjalu (Sensitive Plant) (Mimosa pudica)

Lajjalu (Mimosa pudica) possesses astringent, wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, and haemostatic properties. It helps reduce intestinal bleeding, promotes healing of inflamed mucosa, and assists in controlling excessive bowel movements. Its Grahi (absorbent) action contributes to restoring stool consistency.

7. Dhataki (Fire Flame Bush) (Woodfordia fruticosa)

Dhataki (Woodfordia fruticosa) is a well-known Grahi (absorbent) and Stambhana (haemostatic) herb. It reduces excessive intestinal secretions, controls bleeding, and supports healing of damaged intestinal tissues. Its Kashaya (astringent) Rasa makes it valuable in diarrhoea associated with mucus and blood.

8. Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa)

Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) possesses excellent haemostatic, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties. It reduces inflammation, arrests bleeding, and promotes tissue healing. In Ushiradi Kashaya, Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa) strengthens the intestinal mucosa and helps manage dysentery associated with blood and mucus.

9. Bilva (Bael) (Aegle marmelos)

Bilva (Aegle marmelos) is one of the most respected Grahi herbs in Ayurveda. It improves digestion, reduces intestinal motility, controls diarrhoea, relieves abdominal pain, and restores normal bowel habits. Bilva (Aegle marmelos) is particularly useful in chronic diarrhoea and irritable bowel conditions associated with weak digestion.

Therapeutic Actions

Ushiradi Kashaya exhibits several therapeutic properties that contribute to its effectiveness in gastrointestinal disorders:

  • Deepana (enhances digestive fire)
  • Pachana (digests Ama)
  • Grahi (improves intestinal absorption)
  • Stambhana (controls excessive bowel movements and bleeding)
  • Shothahara (reduces inflammation)
  • Pittahara (pacifies aggravated Pitta)
  • Raktastambhaka (controls bleeding)
  • Vedanasthapana (relieves abdominal pain)
  • Jvarahara (helps alleviate fever associated with intestinal disorders)
  • Balances intestinal secretions and restores bowel function

Indications

Ushiradi Kashaya is traditionally indicated in:

  • Arochaka (loss of appetite)
  • Picchama (mucus in stools)
  • Vibandha (constipation associated with impaired digestion)
  • Atisara (diarrhoea)
  • Raktatisara (bloody diarrhoea)
  • Atisara associated with severe abdominal pain
  • Jvaratisara (diarrhoea associated with fever)
  • Pitta-predominant intestinal disorders
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions with mucus and bleeding

Conclusion

Ushiradi Kashaya is a well-balanced classical Ayurvedic formulation designed for the management of Atisara (diarrhea), particularly when accompanied by bleeding, mucus discharge, abdominal pain, impaired digestion, and fever. Its unique combination of Deepana (enhancing digestive fire), Pachana (digestion of metabolic toxins), Grahi (absorbent), Stambhana (haemostatic), Pittahara (pitta pacifying), and Shothahara (antiinflammatory) herbs enables it to address both the underlying pathology and the clinical manifestations of gastrointestinal disorders. By improving Agni, digesting Ama, reducing intestinal inflammation, strengthening the intestinal mucosa, and restoring normal bowel function, the formulation provides comprehensive management rather than symptomatic relief alone. The pharmacological activities demonstrated by its constituent herbs further support its traditional therapeutic applications. When prescribed judiciously by a qualified Ayurvedic physician, Ushiradi Kashaya remains an important classical decoction for the effective management of diarrhoeal disorders associated with Pitta and Vata imbalance.
