Chandan Ark

Introduction

Chandan Ark is a classical Ayurvedic distillate prepared from Safed Chandan (Santalum album), commonly known as White Sandalwood. This aromatic and cooling formulation is traditionally used for managing disorders associated with aggravated Pitta Dosha, excessive body heat, urinary irritation, burning sensation, and heat-induced weakness. In Ayurveda, White Sandalwood is regarded as one of the finest natural cooling herbs. Its fragrant heartwood possesses Sheeta Virya (cold potency) and acts as a soothing agent for the urinary system, blood, heart, and mind. Chandan Ark is prepared through the process of distillation, which captures the volatile therapeutic principles of sandalwood into a gentle aqueous extract. Because this formulation contains only sandalwood as the primary ingredient, it is considered more cooling and calming than many compound distillates. It is traditionally administered during summer seasons, burning urinary disorders, chronic Pitta aggravation, and conditions associated with internal heat.

Ingredients

Main Ingredient

  • Safed Chandan (White Sandalwood) (Santalum album) – 2.5 seer (~2.3 kg)
    • Fine wood powder or coarse shavings

Liquid Medium

  • Water – 20 seer (~18–19 liters)

Method of Preparation

The coarse powder or shavings of high-quality White Sandalwood are soaked overnight in approximately eight times water. This prolonged soaking softens the woody fibers and facilitates extraction of aromatic constituents. The following morning, the soaked mixture is transferred into a traditional Bhapka or Nadika Yantra (distillation apparatus). The preparation is then heated gently so that the volatile cooling compounds rise with steam and condense into distilled liquid. Approximately 20 bottles of aromatic distillate are collected and stored in clean glass containers. This distillation method preserves the subtle fragrance and therapeutic cooling principles of sandalwood without exposing it to excessive heat.

The formulation helps maintain fluid balance and reduces internal irritation without producing heaviness.

Modern Perspective

Santalum album contains several aromatic compounds including:

  • Alpha-santalol
  • Beta-santalol
  • Volatile oils
  • Sesquiterpenes

These compounds are known for:

  • Cooling and soothing effects
  • Mild antimicrobial activity
  • Relaxing fragrance
  • Anti-inflammatory properties

Distilled sandalwood preparations have traditionally been valued for urinary comfort, skin cooling, and emotional calmness.

Advantages of Ark Preparation

The Ark (distillate) form offers several benefits:

  • Rapid absorption
  • Light digestion
  • Pleasant aroma
  • Easy administration
  • Cooling effect without heaviness

Unlike dense decoctions or oily preparations, Chandan Ark is gentle on digestion and suitable even in weak digestive states.

Precautions

  • Excessive use in very cold constitution individuals should be avoided
  • Use cautiously in severe low digestive fire conditions
  • Store in a cool, airtight glass bottle
  • Always use clean and properly prepared distillate

Conclusion

Chandan Ark is a simple yet highly effective Ayurvedic distillate prepared from Santalum album (White Sandalwood). Its cooling, soothing, and Pitta-pacifying properties make it valuable in urinary irritation, burning sensation, excessive body heat, and blood-related Pitta disorders. Due to its fragrant and gentle nature, it also promotes mental calmness and physical comfort during hot conditions. Classical Ayurvedic physicians have long regarded Chandan Ark as a safe and elegant cooling preparation for maintaining internal balance and vitality.
