Chaturbhuja Rasa – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Reference – AFI Part 1 20:13 & Rasendersaarsangreha/ Unmadachikitsa.

Abstract

Mental disorders such as Unmada (psychosis) described in Ayurveda manifest due to vitiation of Manovaha Srotas (psychic channels) and imbalance of Raja and Tama Doshas, leading to distortion in perception, cognition, and behavior. Chaturbhuj Rasa, a classical Rasoushadh formulation, is renowned for its potent Medhya (nootropic), Manas-shamak (mind-calming), and Balya (nervine tonic) properties. It harmonizes the functions of the brain and nervous system, enhances mental clarity, and stabilizes emotional imbalances. By pacifying Vata and Pitta Dosha, it alleviates symptoms like agitation, insomnia, delusion, and anxiety associated with Unmada. Enriched with herbo-mineral ingredients possessing Rasayana (rejuvenative) and Sattvavardhaka (mental-strengthening) qualities, Chaturbhuj Rasa serves as an excellent Ayurvedic remedy for neuropsychiatric conditions. It rejuvenates the nervous system, promotes tranquility, and restores mental equilibrium through its deep systemic and psychosomatic actions.

Introduction

Chaturbhuj Rasa is a classical Rasoushadh mentioned in authoritative Ayurvedic texts under Unmad Chikitsa Adhyaya (chapter on psychotic disorders). The name “Chaturbhuj” symbolically represents the four-armed divine protector — signifying multidimensional therapeutic efficacy that balances Sharira (body), Manas (mind), Indriya (senses), and Atma (spirit). This formulation is specifically indicated in Unmada (psychosis), Apasmara (epilepsy), and Manovikara (mental derangements) caused by the vitiation of Vata and Pitta Dosha.The formulation combines the therapeutic potential of Parada (purified mercury), Gandhaka (purified sulphur), Vatsanabha (Aconitum ferox), and other neurotonic herbs to stabilize disturbed nerve impulses, enhance cognitive functions, and calm the agitated mind. In conditions of Manovaha Srotodushti (vitiation of microchannels associated with mind), it restores Sattva Guna and corrects the imbalance of Raja and Tama Dosha, thereby improving intellect (Dhi), memory (Smriti), and coordination (Cheshta). Owing to its Medhya Rasayana and Manas-shamak action, Chaturbhuj Rasa plays a significant role in Ayurvedic management of psychotic and psychosomatic disorders.

Description Of The Ingredients

1. Mruta Suta (Purified And Processed Mercury / Shuddha Parada Sindura)

Purified Mercury, prepared through Shodhana (purification) and Marana (calcination) processes, is the chief Yogavahi (catalytic agent) in this formulation. It enhances the bioavailability and potency of other drugs. Possessing Tridosha-shamaka (balancer of all three doshas) properties, it specifically pacifies Vata and Kapha—the prime doshas involved in Unmada (psychosis). The active compound Mercuric Sulphide (HgS) provides neuroprotective, adaptogenic, and mild sedative effects, stabilizing nerve impulses and reducing mental agitation.

2. Hema (Calcined Gold / Svarna Bhasma)

Hema or Svarna Bhasma is a renowned Medhya Rasayana (nootropic rejuvenator) that nourishes the Majja Dhatu (nervous tissue) and enhances Dhi, Dhriti, and Smriti (intellect, patience, and memory). It pacifies deranged Vata and strengthens the Manovaha Srotas (mental channels). The active component Colloidal Gold (Au nanoparticles) acts as a neurotonic and antioxidant, improving neural conductivity and mental clarity. In Unmada (psychosis), it helps regulate mood fluctuations, anxiety, and cognitive disturbances.

3. Sila (Purified Realgar / Shuddha Manahshila – Arsenic Disulphide)

Manahshila is a potent Lekhana (scraping) and Medhya (brain-strengthening) drug known to detoxify the Manovaha Srotas (psychic pathways). It pacifies Kapha-Vata Dosha and reduces dullness, confusion, and irritability of the mind. The active constituent Arsenic Disulphide (As₂S₂) exhibits controlled neuro-stimulant and sedative effects when properly purified. It helps restore normal neuronal activity, calm excessive brain excitation, and support psychological equilibrium in Unmada (psychosis).

4. Kasturika (Musk / Mrga-mada)

Kasturika is an invaluable animal-origin drug with Hridya (cardiotonic), Medhya (brain tonic), and Pranavardhaka (vital energy-promoting) actions. It acts as a stimulant and revitalizer for the Manovaha Srotas and Hridaya (heart). The principal active constituent Muscone (C₁₆H₃₀O) provides neuroprotective, anxiolytic, and anti-convulsive properties. In Unmada (psychosis), it improves alertness, lifts depression, and restores Sattva Guna (mental balance and clarity).

5. Tala (Purified Orpiment / Shuddha Haritala – Arsenic Trisulphide)

Tala or Haritala (Purified Orpiment) after proper Shodhana (purification) becomes an effective Kapha-Pittahara (Kapha-Pitta pacifier) and Manas Shodhaka (mind purifier). It helps relieve toxic accumulation affecting brain channels. The active element Arsenic Trisulphide (As₂S₃) exhibits neuro-regulatory and anti-anxiety actions when used in minute quantities. In Unmada (psychosis), it stabilizes overactive neurons, clears mental confusion, and harmonizes neurotransmitter balance.

6. Kanya Svarasa (Fresh Juice Of Aloe Vera / Kumari Swarasa)

Kanya Svarasa serves as the Bhavana Dravya (trituration medium) for the formulation. It is known for its Rasayana (rejuvenative) and Srotoshodhaka (channel-cleansing) properties. The active principles Aloin and Emodin (anthraquinones) have antioxidant and neuro-calming effects. They aid in proper assimilation of metallic ingredients, soothe Pitta in the nervous system, and promote clarity of thought and relaxation of the mind in Unmada (psychosis).

7. Eranda Patra (Leaves of Castor Plant / Ricinus communis)

Eranda Patra is used for Aveshtana (wrapping during processing) in the preparation. It is Vata-Pittahara (reduces Vata and Pitta) and provides grounding stability to the formulation. Its active component Ricinine alkaloid offers mild sedative and neuroprotective effects. The leaf essence absorbed during Aveshtana enhances the formulation’s soothing influence on the nervous system, making it beneficial for Vataja Unmada (psychotic states caused by Vata imbalance).

Method Of Preparation

  • All ingredients of Chaturbhuj Rasa are first subjected to Shodhana (purification) according to Rasa Shastra to remove impurities and enhance therapeutic efficacy.
  • Shuddha Parada (Purified Mercury) and Shuddha Gandhaka (Purified Sulphur) are triturated together in a clean Khalva Yantra (mortar and pestle) until a smooth, fine, and lustreless black powder known as Kajjali is obtained.
  • To this Kajjali (HgS), Hema Bhasma (Calcined Gold), Shuddha Manahshila (Purified Realgar), and Shuddha Haritala (Purified Orpiment) are added in specified proportions and ground thoroughly to form a homogeneous mixture.
  • The mixture is then subjected to Bhavana (trituration) using Kanya Svarasa (Fresh juice of Aloe vera leaves) until a soft, cohesive, and uniform paste is formed, ensuring complete absorption of the herbal essence.
  • The prepared mass is carefully wrapped in Eranda Patra (Fresh Castor leaves) for Aveshtana (covering), allowing infusion of the Vata-Pittahara (Vata and Pitta pacifying) properties of the leaves.
    {
    After proper Mardana (trituration) with Kumari Svarasa (Aloe vera juice), the prepared mass is covered with Eranda Patra (castor leaves) and kept within a heap of Dhanya (grains) for three days. This process enhances potency and ensures proper Samskara (processing).}
  • The wrapped formulation is dried in shade to preserve its potency and delicate volatile principles.
  • After drying, the material is finely powdered and rolled into small Vati (tablets) or retained as a fine churna form.
  • The final product is stored in airtight glass containers to prevent moisture absorption and ensure long-term stability and potency.
