Shatkatvar Taila – Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More

Introduction

Shatkatvar Taila is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil prepared by processing sesame oil with buttermilk and a group of selected herbal and mineral-origin ingredients. The formulation is traditionally indicated in febrile conditions associated with burning sensation and abnormal thermal discomfort of the body. The preparation utilizes Katvara Takra, a specific form of buttermilk obtained after removal of the supernatant fatty layer from curd, which acts as the principal liquid medium. The combined processing of cooling, anti-inflammatory, and restorative herbs in sesame oil produces a formulation suitable for external application in heat-associated systemic disturbances.

तैलं ज्वरं षड्गुणतक्रसिद्धमभ्यञ्जनाच्छीतविदाहनुत्स्यात्।।

The verse explains that sesame oil processed with Suvarcika, Nagara (Zingiber officinale), Kustha (Saussurea lappa), Murva (Marsdenia tenacissima), Laksha (Laccifer lacca), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), and Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) in six times quantity of buttermilk alleviates abnormal coldness and burning sensation associated with fever when applied externally.

Composition

I. Kalka Dravyas (Paste Ingredients)

  1. Suvarcika Kshara (Alkaline preparation from natural mineral salts) – 12.5 g
  2. Sunthi (Zingiber officinale – Dry Ginger) – 12.5 g
  3. Kustha (Saussurea lappa – Costus Root) – 12.5 g
  4. Murva (Marsdenia tenacissima – Murva Root) – 12.5 g

  6. Haridra (Curcuma longa – Turmeric) – 12.5 g
  7. Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia – Indian Madder) – 12.5 g
  8. Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra – Licorice Root) – 12.5 g

II. Taila Dravya

  1. Murchita Tila Taila (Sesamum indicum – Processed Sesame Oil) – 400 ml

III. Drava Dravya

  1. Katvara Takra (Buttermilk prepared from curd after removal of fatty layer) – 2400 ml

Method Of Preparation

All Kalka Dravyas are cleaned, dried, and powdered separately. The powders are triturated with a small quantity of buttermilk to obtain a smooth herbal paste. Processed sesame oil is taken in a suitable stainless steel vessel and the prepared paste is added to it. The prescribed quantity of Katvara Takra is incorporated into the mixture. The entire combination is heated on mild fire following classical Sneha Paka procedure. Continuous stirring is maintained to ensure uniform processing and to prevent adherence of the paste to the vessel. Heating is continued until the aqueous component evaporates completely and only medicated oil remains in its original quantity. Proper completion is indicated by absence of moisture, characteristic aroma, and formation of a soft non-sticky residue of kalka. The oil is filtered after self-cooling and stored in airtight glass containers.
