Udaymaartand Ras – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Reference– Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Udavartanahrogadhikar, Chapter 31 Verse 46-47

Abstract

The obstruction and upward movement of Vata Dosha (Udavarta) resulting from indigestion (Ajirna) and accumulation of Ama (endotoxins) leads to various disorders such as Flatulence (Anaha), Constipation (Vibandha), Oedema (Shotha), Piles (Arsha), and Fistula (Bhagandara). These pathological states cause abdominal fullness, discomfort, improper evacuation, and disturbed digestive functions. According to Ayurveda, such conditions are managed by Deepana (appetizer), Pachana (digestive), Vata-anulomana (Vata-regulating), and Shothahara (anti-inflammatory) therapies. Udaymartand Rasa, is renowned for its Vata-pacifying (Vatashamaka), Aamapachaka (detoxifying), and Agnivardhaka (digestive fire-enhancing) properties. It helps in clearing intestinal obstruction, relieving bloating, promoting proper bowel movement, and restoring digestive strength. Let’s explore it in detail!

Introduction

Udaymartand Rasa is a classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation (Rasaushadhi) primarily indicated for disorders arising from Vata imbalance (Vata Vyadhi) such as Udavarta (upward movement of Vata), Anaha (flatulence), and Vibandha (constipation). The term “Udaymartand” signifies the “rising sun,” symbolizing its potent ability to rekindle the digestive fire (Agni Deepana) and dispel accumulated toxins (Ama Pachana) from the body, and is revered for its Tridosha-balancing action, with special emphasis on pacifying aggravated Vata and Kapha Doshas. The synergistic combination of Shuddha Hingula (Red Sulphide of Mercury), Shuddha Jaiphal (Myristica fragrans), Shuddha Suhaga (Borax), and Shuddha Vatsanabha (Aconitum ferox) enhances digestion, reduces abdominal distension, and restores the natural downward movement of Vata (Vata Anulomana). Its Deepana-Pachana (digestive and carminative) and Shothahara (anti-inflammatory) actions make it an excellent remedy for gastrointestinal ailments, oedema, and piles. Thus, Udaymartand Rasa serves as a powerful classical remedy for promoting digestive harmony, detoxification, and regulation of Vata flow within the body.

Classical Indication

Udavartanahrogadhikar (chapter of Udavarta i.e. reverse movement of Vata & Anaha i.e. bloating, constipation).

Ingredients

  1. Shuddha Hingula – Purified Cinnabar (Mercury Sulphide) – 40 grams
  2. Shuddha Jayapala – Purified Croton tiglium – 20 grams
  3. Shuddha Sugandha – Purified Camphor / Aromatic agent – 10 grams
  4. Shuddha Vatsanabha – Purified Aconitum ferox – 5 grams

Description Of The Ingredients

1. Shuddha Hingula (Purified Cinnabar / Mercury Sulphide)

Shuddha Hingula is a purified form of Cinnabaris (Red Sulphide of Mercury), renowned in Rasa Shastra for its Rasayana and Yogavahi (synergistic) properties. It exhibits Katu-Tikta Rasa (pungent-bitter taste), Snigdha-Sara Guna (unctuous and mobile qualities), and Ushna Virya (hot potency). Acting on the Annavaha and Rasavaha Srotas, it stimulates Agni (digestive fire), digests Ama (endotoxins), and normalizes Vata-Kapha balance. In Udaymartand Rasa, it serves as the chief digestive and catalytic agent that promotes metabolic correction, relieves bloating, and supports detoxification. Additionally, its Jwarahara (antipyretic) and Agnideepaka (digestive stimulant) properties make it beneficial in chronic fevers (Jirna Jwara), where sluggish digestion and toxin accumulation are the underlying causes.

2. Shuddha Jayapala (Purified Croton tiglium)

Shuddha Jayapala is derived from the seeds of Croton tiglium, a potent herb that undergoes extensive purification to eliminate its toxic oil content while preserving its therapeutic value. It possesses Katu-Tikta Rasa (pungent-bitter taste), Laghu-Tikshna Guna (light and sharp qualities), and Ushna Virya (hot potency), acting predominantly on Kapha and Vata Doshas. In Udaymartand Rasa, it acts as a strong purgative (Virechaka) and detoxifier (Shodhana Dravya) that clears intestinal stagnation, removes Aama, and promotes healthy bowel movement. By purifying the system, it assists in reducing fever caused by metabolic sluggishness (Aamaj Jwara) and supports the restoration of normal appetite and digestion after prolonged illness.

3. Shuddha Suhaga (Purified Tankan / Borax)

Shuddha Suhaga, known as Tankan in Ayurveda, is the purified form of Borax (Sodium Biborate), which is widely used as a digestive stimulant and detoxifying mineral. It exhibits Katu-Tikta Rasa (pungent-bitter taste), Laghu-Ruksha Guna (light and dry qualities), and Ushna Virya (hot potency). It primarily acts on the Annavaha and Mutravaha Srotas (digestive and urinary channels) and effectively pacifies Vata and Kapha Doshas. In Udaymartand Rasa, Shuddha Suhaga serves as a Deepana (appetizer), Pachana (digestive), and Vatanulomaka (carminative) agent. It enhances digestion, relieves gaseous distension, and promotes downward movement of Vata, thereby easing abdominal bloating and constipation (Anaha). Owing to its Aamapachaka (toxin-digesting) and Jwarahara (antipyretic) nature, it helps eliminate metabolic toxins and supports recovery in chronic fevers (Jirna Jwara) caused by indigestion and Kapha obstruction. Its subtle penetrating property (Sukshma Guna) ensures deep systemic action, improving metabolism and alleviating heaviness and sluggishness.

4. Shuddha Vatsanabha (Purified Aconitum ferox)

Shuddha Vatsanabha is obtained from Aconitum ferox after rigorous purification, transforming its toxic alkaloids into therapeutic agents. It shows Tikta-Katu Rasa (bitter-pungent taste), Laghu-Ruksha Guna (light and dry qualities), Ushna Virya (hot potency), and Katu Vipaka (pungent post-digestive effect). Acting primarily on the Nervous, Digestive, and Circulatory systems, it is Vata-Kapha Shamana (pacifying), Shoolahara (analgesic), and Agnideepaka (digestive stimulant). In Udaymartand Rasa, it plays a vital role in correcting the Udavarta (reverse Vata flow) and relieving abdominal pain, while also helping to reduce fever by enhancing perspiration (Swedajanana) and promoting toxin elimination. Its deep metabolic activation supports recovery in chronic fevers associated with digestive sluggishness and Vata-Kapha imbalance.

Method Of Preparation

All ingredients are purified (Shodhit Dravyas) as per Rasashastra standards. They are finely powdered and triturated together (mardana) with clean water until a soft homogeneous mass forms. Small pills of about 250 mg are rolled and dried in shade (chhaya-shoshita). The pills are stored in airtight glass containers (kach-patra).
