Reference – Bhaishajya-Ratnavali Apasmar rogadhikar Chapter 24 Verse 26-29
Abstract
Neurological disorders like Apasmara (Epilepsy) and Murchha Roga (Fainting/Seizures), often arising from aggravated Vata Dosha, can severely affect the nervous system, leading to recurrent convulsions, loss of consciousness, cognitive disturbances, and compromised quality of life. Ayurveda, with its holistic and natural approach, offers effective management for such complex conditions. Vatkulatak Ras, a classical herbo-mineral formulation, is renowned for its potent Vatahara (Vata-pacifying) and Medhya (intellect-promoting) Rasayana properties. It strengthens neuronal pathways, enhances cerebral function, controls abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, and supports overall nervous system health. This formulation is particularly beneficial in chronic and complicated neurological disorders like Apasmara (Epilepsy) and Murchha (Fainting/Seizures), providing rapid and sustained relief while promoting long-term cognitive and nervous system wellness. Let’s explore it in detail!
Introduction
Vatkulatak Ras is a classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation primarily indicated for the management of neurological disorders like Apasmara (Epilepsy) and Murchha Roga (Fainting/Seizures). The name can be broken down as follows: "Vat" denotes the Vata dosha, whose aggravation leads to neurological imbalance, fainting, and convulsive disorders; "Kulatak" refers to the powerful combination of mineral and herbal ingredients that stabilize, rejuvenate, and strengthen the nervous system; and "Ras" signifies a herbo-mineral preparation in Rasashastra. This formulation is recognized for its Vatahara (Vata-pacifying) and Medhya Rasayana (intellect-promoting) properties. It supports nervous system strength, regulates abnormal neuronal activity, and enhances cognitive and neuromuscular functions, integrating potent bhasmas and herbal extracts for both therapeutic efficacy and holistic neurological well-being. Brahma named this preparation ‘Vatakulantak Ras’ to destroy all types of Vata disorders.

Description Of The Ingredients
1. Kasturi (Musk)
It is an excellent Medhya (brain tonic) and Vata-Kapha pacifying agent known for its stimulant and nervous properties. With its Ushna Veerya (hot potency) and deep-penetrating nature, Kasturi enhances cerebral circulation, restores consciousness, and prevents recurrent seizures. It acts as a natural anticonvulsant, revitalizing the nervous system and improving sensory and motor coordination in Apasmara (Epilepsy) and Murchha (Fainting) conditions.
2. Shuddha Manashil (Purified Realgar)
It is possessing Ushna (hot) and Tikshna (sharp) properties, Shuddha Manashil helps in removing Avarana (obstruction) of Vata in the nervous channels. It acts as a potent Rasayana (rejuvenative) and Vishaghna (antitoxic) agent, enhancing brain activity, promoting alertness, and controlling involuntary muscular movements. Its combination with Shuddha Parad and Gandhak helps stabilize neuronal impulses and reduces convulsive tendencies.
3. Nagkeshar Churna (Mesua ferrea Powder)
It is known for its Tridosha-shamaka (balancing all three doshas) and Hridya (cardiotonic) properties, Nagkeshar promotes healthy blood circulation and strengthens the heart and brain. It provides a calming effect on the nervous system, improving mental clarity and emotional stability. In Vatkulatak Ras, it acts synergistically to prevent fainting spells and excessive nervous excitation seen in Apasmara.
4. Beheda Churna (Terminalia bellirica Powder)
It is rich in Tannins, Gallic acid, and Lignans, supporting brain detoxification and improving memory and intellect. With Kashaya (astringent) taste and Sheet Veerya (cold potency), it stabilizes the nervous system and prevents oxidative damage to neurons. It enhances concentration and coordination, aiding in recovery from chronic neurological fatigue and seizures.
5. Shuddha Parad (Purified Mercury)
Renowned in Rasashastra as a Yogavahi (catalyst), it enhances the potency of all ingredients in the formulation. With Rasayana (rejuvenating) and Vatahara (Vata-pacifying) properties, it strengthens the brain and spinal cord, improves synaptic communication, and revitalizes weakened neural tissues. In Vatkulatak Ras, it works synergistically with Shuddha Gandhak to maintain equilibrium between Vata and Pitta, restoring consciousness and vitality.
6. Shuddha Gandhak (Purified Sulphur)
It acts as an excellent Rasayana with Pitta-Vata-shamaka action. Gandhak supports nerve nourishment, enhances metabolism, and aids in proper conduction of impulses in the brain. Together with Shuddha Parad, it forms potent Rasasindura-like synergy, improving oxygenation and neural energy. It helps reduce tremors, convulsions, and fainting episodes by supporting stable nerve functions.
7. Jayphal Churna (Myristica fragrans Powder)
It has strong Medhya (intellect-promoting) and Nidrajanaka (sleep-inducing) properties. Jayphal acts as a natural nervine sedative, calming excessive Vata activity in the brain. With its Ushna Veerya, it promotes mental relaxation, reduces anxiety, and supports restorative sleep, which is crucial in epileptic conditions and fainting disorders.
8. Choti Elaichi Churna (Elettaria cardamomum Powder)
It is a gentle Tridosha-pacifying and Hridaya-prasādaka (heart-refreshing) herb that improves oxygen supply and enhances sensory perception. It balances the nervous system, relieves mental fatigue, and adds aromatic potency to the formulation. In Vatkulatak Ras, it harmonizes the action of stronger ingredients and supports cognitive freshness.
9. Laung Churna (Syzygium aromaticum Powder)
Rich in Eugenol and antioxidant compounds, Laung acts as a natural stimulant, analgesic, and neuroprotective herb. It enhances blood flow to the brain, prevents neuronal degeneration, and alleviates stress-induced convulsions. Its Ushna Veerya promotes vitality, clears blocked Vata channels, and improves mental alertness in Apasmara (Epilepsy) and Murchha (Fainting) conditions.
