Hridayarnava Rasa – Ingredients, Preparation, Ayurvedic Properties, Indications & Dosages

Reference – AFI Part 1 20:55 & Rasendersaarsangreha/ Hridrogachikitsa.

Abstract

Cardiac disorders such as Kaphaja Hridroga (heart diseases caused due to Kapha vitiation) often lead to symptoms like heaviness in the chest, dyspnea, fatigue, edema, and reduced cardiac efficiency. These conditions arise from sluggish metabolism, accumulation of Kapha-Meda (lipid and mucus), and obstruction in the Rasavaha Srotas (circulatory channels). Ayurveda, with its holistic and rejuvenative approach, offers effective management for such complex cardiovascular ailments. Hridayarnava Rasa, a classical herbo-mineral formulation is renowned for its potent Hridya (cardiac tonic), Lekhana (scraping), and Srotoshodhaka (channel-purifying) properties. It strengthens the myocardium, regulates lipid metabolism, enhances blood circulation, and restores cardiac rhythm. By pacifying Kapha and Vata Dosha, it provides sustained relief in symptoms like chest congestion, palpitation, and breathlessness. This time-tested formulation acts as a natural Hridya Rasayana, promoting cardiac vitality, circulatory balance, and overall cardiovascular wellness. Let’s explore it in detail!

Introduction

Hridayarnava Rasa is a classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation primarily indicated for the management of Kaphaja Hridroga (cardiac disorders arising due to Kapha vitiation). The name can be interpreted as follows: “Hridaya” refers to the heart, the central organ governing circulation and vitality; “Arnava” means ocean, symbolizing depth and nourishment; and “Rasa” denotes a herbo-mineral preparation in Rasashastra known for its potent therapeutic actions. The term Hridayarnava means “nectar for the heart.” It symbolizes a formulation that nourishes and rejuvenates cardiac tissues (Hridya Rasayana). This formulation renowned for its Hridya (cardiac-strengthening), Lekhana (cholesterol-reducing), and Kapha-Vatahara (Dosha-balancing) properties, also helps in strengthening heart muscles, improving circulation, and alleviating congestion. It restores the natural rhythm and vitality of the heart, making it a classical formulation of great significance in Ayurvedic management of cardiovascular disorders.

Description Of The Ingredients

1. Shuddha Parada (Purified Mercury)

Shuddha Parada, or Purified Mercury, is a potent metallic element extensively purified through Shodhana (detoxification) to remove its toxic impurities and enhance its bioavailability. It is known for its Rasayana (rejuvenative), Vajikarana (vitality-enhancing), and Medhya (neurotonic) properties. In the context of Hridroga (cardiac disorders), Mercury serves as a powerful catalytic agent enhancing the synergistic activity of other ingredients. Trace bioactive mercury compounds act as Yogavahi (catalysts), improving tissue penetration and aiding in the detoxification of lipid congestion in coronary channels, thereby promoting better cardiac metabolism and circulation.

2. Shuddha Gandhaka (Purified Sulphur)

Shuddha Gandhaka, or Purified Sulphur, undergoes multiple Shodhana (purification) processes to become therapeutically potent and safe. It exhibits Kaphahara (Kapha-pacifying), Raktashodhaka (blood purifying), and Vranashodhana (healing) properties. In Hridayarnava Rasa, it works synergistically with Parada to form Kajjali, enhancing absorption and stability of the formulation. Sulphur compounds like polysulfides aid in improving blood rheology, reducing oxidative stress, and preventing atherosclerotic plaque deposition— all contributing to cardiac protection and enhanced microcirculation.

3. Tamra Bhasma (Calcined Copper)

Tamra Bhasma, or Calcined Copper, is a vital mineral component prepared through repeated Marana (incineration) and Amritikarana (purification) to achieve a therapeutic nano-sized ash form. It is Deepana (appetizer), Pachana (digestive), Lekhana (scraping), and Hridya (cardiotonic) in action. It helps remove Ama (metabolic toxins) and excessive Kapha from the Hridaya Srotas (cardiac channels). Copper ions and copper oxides play a vital role in enhancing enzymatic antioxidant defense (superoxide dismutase activity), reducing cholesterol accumulation, and improving myocardial energy metabolism, making it a key cardiotonic agent.

4. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)

Haritaki, known as Abhaya in Sanskrit, is one of the Triphala constituents and is used for Bhavana (trituration) in this formulation. It exhibits Anulomana (mild laxative), Deepana (appetizer), Rasayana (rejuvenative), and Kapha-Vata Shamana (balancing of Kapha and Vata) properties. Tannins such as chebulagic acid and chebulinic acid exert antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects, reducing cholesterol and oxidative damage to cardiac tissue, thereby supporting heart health and vascular tone.

5. Bibhitaka (Terminalia bellirica)

Bibhitaka, or Vibhitaki, is another Triphala ingredient used for Bhavana (trituration). It is renowned for its Kaphahara (Kapha-reducing), Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), and Hridya (cardiac strengthening) actions. It helps clear accumulated mucus and lipids from channels, supporting normal cardiac rhythm. Gallic acid, ellagic acid, and β-sitosterol contribute to lipid regulation, prevention of fatty deposition in arterial walls, and reduction of cardiac strain, ensuring improved heart performance.

6. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)

Amalaki, or Indian Gooseberry, is used in Bhavana (trituration) to infuse its Rasayana (rejuvenating) and Hridya (heart-tonic) properties into the compound. It pacifies Pitta and Kapha doshas, rejuvenates Rakta Dhatu (blood tissue), and strengthens cardiac muscles. Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), emblicanin A and B act as potent antioxidants, protecting myocardial cells from oxidative stress, enhancing cardiac contractility, and maintaining vascular elasticity.

7. Kakamachi Drava (Juice of Solanum nigrum)

Kakamachi, known as Black Nightshade, provides Drava Dravya (liquid medium) for Bhavana (trituration). It is Shothahara (anti-inflammatory), Yakritottejaka (hepatostimulating), and Hridya (cardiac supportive). Its inclusion ensures proper detoxification and restoration of Rakta (blood) and Pitta (bile) balance. Solanine and solamargine alkaloids exhibit anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and cardioprotective actions by reducing lipid accumulation and oxidative myocardial damage, thereby enhancing overall cardiac endurance.

Method Of Preparation

  • Shuddha Parada (Purified Mercury) and Shuddha Gandhaka (Purified Sulphur) are triturated together to form Kajjali (black sulphide compound).
  • To this, Mrta Tamra Bhasma (Calcined Copper Ash) is added and ground thoroughly.
  • The mixture is then subjected to Bhavana (trituration with liquid media) using the decoction or juice (Drava Dravya) of Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Bibhitaka (Terminalia bellirica), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), and Kakamachi (Solanum nigrum) until a uniform and smooth consistency is achieved.
  • The prepared mass is then dried and rolled into small tablets (Vati) weighing approximately 125–250 mg each.
